New report documents initiatives to help migrant workers access justice for wage theft
A new global report by the Migrant Justice Institute showcases promising initiatives in different regions of the world that enable migrant workers to bring claims and achieve redress for wage theft. In particular, the report documents employer-sponsored visas that enable workers to change employers and to file complaints safely, firewalls that prevent government labour agencies from sharing information about workers’ residence status with immigration enforcement, and institutions to remedy wage theft, including for undocumented workers.
UN General Assembly recognises need for firewalls to combat human trafficking
The 2021 Political Declaration on the Implementation of the UN Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons, adopted by the UN General Assembly on 22 and 23 November, includes the need ‘to establish firewalls between immigration checks and labour inspections, and/or to ensure that labour inspections are conducted in such a way that does not put potential victims of trafficking in fear of immigration authorities or offences.’
