Greece: first video footage documents pushback at sea
An investigation from the New York Times documented a pushback carried out at sea by the Hellenic Coast Guard. The video footage reveals that the migrants, already present on a Greek island, were forced to board a speedboat, then transferred onto a Coast Guard boat and finally were left in an inflatable life raft and set adrift. The migrants were finally intercepted by the Turkish coast guard and brought to the Izmir detention centre. The journalists believe this video footage may be the “most damning evidence” of Greece’s violation of international and EU asylum law. Following the report, the EU Commission urged the Greek government to duly investigate the incident.
Lithuania: law validates migrants’ pushbacks
The Lithuanian parliament passed a law allowing pushbacks within five kilometres of the border, in certain circumstances. The amendments, scheduled to take effect pending the president's signature, formalise the existing practice of turning away migrants. Since August 2021, around 20,200 individuals have been prevented from crossing into Lithuania from Belarus. Another law adopted at the end of April allows European volunteers to join its national border guard force and use violence against migrants.
