"The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still." Exodus 14:14 These are the words Moses spoke to the Children of Israel just before the Lord parted the Red Sea and led them to safety away from the Egyptian army. Moses encouraged the people to simply trust in the Lord and to believe that He would fight for them. As you are aware, the Lord did indeed deliver His people that day and crushed Pharaoh's army. There is a time for action and a time for stillness. Every time is the time for prayer, and for trusting only in He who made us all. It is in our quiet and still moments, of prayer and reflection upon His words that the path to action can be seen. The people at first doubted the words of Moses and lamented the fact that they had even left Egypt. They expected a fight, to pay the price of their freedom in their blood. But when the sea parted in such miraculous fashion, they saw the power of God and were led to safety. The event would continue to be an encouragement for all that was yet to come knowing that God keeps His promises. How difficult it is for us to be still in times of trouble. We want to take the situation into our own hands and trust in our own strength rather than to rely upon God's direction or call out to Him for deliverance. But when we recognize God and remember His promises to us and follow His will over our own, then we find the path to safety. God has performed an even greater and more miraculous deliverance for us even beyond the grand parting of the Red Sea. Through the cross, Jesus has delivered us from sin, death and the power of the devil. In the waters of Holy Baptism, He has attributed to us all that He accomplished through His suffering and death. As we where simply still and received the water when we were baptized, so also, we received His gracious promises. Because of God's promises, we will always live in His grace.
