Back then there were strong workers parties, workers had a way to balance out the one sidedness of Capitalism. Once Communism and workers parties were vilified, and using propaganda, government just banned it, and has been labeling Communism, Socialism etc, as "evil" all bad etc, Capitalism got a free ride into oblivion, which is where we are now. Socialism acts like brakes on a vehicle driven by Capitalism. Capitalism has no built in brakes and steering wheel is in hands of the Capitalists and such vehicle eventually always goes off the cliff.
