The scriptural references to the book of life would be easily understood to the ancient peoples. The kings and pharaohs would also keep such books of those who served well and those who betrayed. The rewards and punishments were not always immediate. Rewards especially might be delayed.
A good and faithful servant might wait many years for their reward, which might be a position of authority within the kingdom. Such positions may require a vacancy, so when a vacancy would arise, the sages and scribes would bring the book to the king so that the king may choose a worthy servant to fulfill an unfinished work of importance to the kingdom.
What then does a good and faithful servant do whilst no reward is forthcoming? The answer is within the question, continue the work all the while, and trust in the Lord that there is a plan for each of us.
In Matthew 10, our savior reminds us that not even a half penny worth sparrow is left unrecorded in His book, even the hair on our heads is accounted we are loved by Him. How great is such a permanent record to track all these things?
This is the chapter where He entreated us to go among the "lost sheep" those once faithful who have lost the way. We are told to expect great adversity, but not to worry as our mouths will be filled with His words.
How similarly these early Christians are to us in these days? What great secrets of good news do we have and share with the lost sheep of 2021? Are we doing all that we may do each day to bring these lost people to the light? It is our daily prayer that His will be done, and we pray that by His grace we find the path to show this light, that it may shine through us. Here on Earth as it is in Heaven.
