Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the book. The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.
Revelations 20 11-15
Many places in scriptures we find mention of the Book of Life. Or Book of remembrance or Book of Death or some other name as the reference point for judgement. It is described as the source or record wherein are found the deeds of mankind. It is the proverbial permanent record.
It the times these scriptures were written there could be no such book as age and decay eventually destroy such records. The best as could be done was to carve into stone and then protect those stones. Even then, it is not within our power to prevent the loss of records.
In our current age we have a new hope for such a permanent record. One that is beginning to capture and record all the deeds of mankind that find their way into this record. Does it fulfill prophesy? Can it become the book of life from which all judgement may flow?
For a record to serve such a purpose it would need to be unalterable, or at least unalterable without leaving traces of the change to show what has changed. It would need to journal all social activity between each of us and remember and record the complexity of all these interactions.
What does it mean for we the faithful to live in a time when such thing may be possible? Do we take the caution of John the Revelator to heart? Do we make sure to find our name inscribed into this book with all good deeds as well as all deeds most foul? What is our DUTY to the world in light of the great commission we are given at Christ"s ascension to go to all the world and teach the good news?
So many questions weigh upon these understandings. It is my daily prayer that His will be done, and that I find ways to share His message to any who might gain comfort from it. Let the Book of Life show what we do, now and forevermore, Amen.
