There was a public call for EOIs in membership late last year. We had over 40 applications and had a hard job selecting candidates as there were many very good applications. We tried to acheive diverse representation in terms of geography, industry verticals and skillsets. Naturally that left some people disappointed because you can't have a functional comittee with 40+ members.
However the point of the TSC is not to actually create standards, but to create the processes, toolsets and support staffing required to enable ANYONE to create standards if they have industry support. We will be publicly launching the process in the next couple of months at which point it becomes open to much wider participation.
It's been nearly a year and a hard slog to get it to this point. But I think the TSC will be able to make a great contribution to the future of Bitcoin interoperability and growth of the ecosystem.
