Biography

Biden was born in 1951 in Hammonton, New Jersey, and raised in a suburb of Philadelphia. She earned her B.A. from the University of Delaware in 1975. She married then-Sen. Joe Biden (D) in 1977 and helped raise his sons—Hunter and Beau—from his first marriage to his late wife, Neilia. Jill and Joe Biden also had a daughter, Ashley, in 1981.[2]

Biden began teaching English to adolescents at a psychiatric hospital in the 1980s as she earned master's degrees in education from West Chester University and English from Villanova University. She then taught at several schools, including Claymont High School, Brandywine High School, and Delaware Technical and Community College. She earned her D.Ed. from the University of Delaware in 2007.[2][3]

Biden became the second lady of the United States in 2009 after her husband, Joe, was elected vice president in the 2008 presidential election. In that capacity, she focused on the following issues: veterans, military families, community college promotion, and breast cancer prevention awareness. She also continued to work as an English professor at Northern Virginia Community College.[1][2]

In 2019, Biden wrote a memoir, Where the Light Enters: Building a Family, Discovering Myself. She also acted as a surrogate on the campaign trail during her husband's successful 2020 presidential run.[2]
