Nonlinear light #microscopy has revolutionized our ability to observe and understand complex biological processes. However, light can also damage living matter. Yet, the mechanism behind the irreversible perturbation of cellular processes by intense light remains poorly understood. Great collab of research groups of Hanieh Fattahi and Daniel Wehner at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light & Max-Planck-Zentrum für Physik und Medizin to identify the conditions under which intense pulsed lasers can be used in vivo without damaging the organism. On the International Day of Light, we would like to share this picture of the Del'Haye Research Group "Microphotonics" at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light (MPL) with you. Scientists at MPL utilize light to study nonlinear phenomena in photonic integrated circuits and optical fibers. This image shows light traveling through optical fibers. These fibers of pure glass are approximately as thick as human hairs and can be used for numerous applications in science. Here, the light scattered within the fiber gives rise to captivating visual effects. 📸 Image: Shuangyou Zhang #lightday2024 #lightinourlives2024 #science #light

Can AI help us with grasping the essence of physical situations and discovering design concepts for better devices based on that understanding? The field of 'Artificial Scientific Discovery' promises to go into this direction, uncovering interpretable and generalizable solutions to challenging problems. In our new manuscript we introduce an automated discovery approach for finding interesting wave scattering setups, leading to blueprints for better circulators, quantum-limited amplifiers and similar devices. Thanks to the unifying language of coupled-mode theory, these solutions can then be implemented in various hardware platforms, such as microwave circuits, photonic circuits or optomechanics. Who will be the first experimentalist to implement any of these solutions? Read more about it in: https://lnkd.in/e_UgY2i2 Great collaboration with Jonas Landgraf and Vittorio Peano at Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light. #ArtificialIntelligence #Photonics #QuantumOptics #MicrowaveCircuits #QuantumTechnologies #MachineLearning

Photon-number distributions of various light sources have been studied extensively. However, little is known about the statistical distribution of electrons emitted under the effect of intense light. Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light and FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg led by Prof. Maria Chekhova and Prof. Peter Hommelhoff have now discovered extreme and highly unusual statistical events in electron-number distributions obtained when nanometer-sized metal needle tips are illuminated with ultrashort pulses of bright quantum light. The results prove that the number of electrons is influenced by the light statistics and contributes to a deeper understanding of the process of electron emission. These findings will help to further improve electron microscopes. Learn more 👉 https://lnkd.in/dgZWVwuq #science #research #quantum #optics #statistics 📸 © Stefan Meier

I had the honor to deliver opening remarks at the "East African Summer School in Optics and Photonics" and the launch of the "Max Planck Partner Research group at the Multimedia University of Nairobi". It was a great pleasure to deliver lectures at the summer school about ultrashort pulse generation, thin-disk laser technology, attosecond physics, and solar lasers. Optical science and photonics are driving the knowledge advances and economy of the world, encompassing important areas that are at the heart of the needed development for the African continent. In my capacity as the associated editor of the Optics Continuum, I would like to invite colleagues in Africa to submit their research in the Feature issue of the Journals of Optics Continuum and Applied Optics covering “Optical Science and Photonics in Africa”. The issue is led by Zouheir Sekkat and the submission deadline is on 30th of October 2024.
