🚨 New article alert 🚨 https://lnkd.in/gZFCbneU Varicocoele embolisation (varicocele for you Americans) is a minimally-invasive option for men with pain or discomfort. Varicocoeles are also the most commonly encountered finding in males with infertility. In this study, we showed that the cost to perform varicocoele embolisation was extremely low in our healthcare model: "The median cost for the entire treatment including procedural, non-procedural, ward and peri-procedural costs was AUD$2208.10, range AUD$1691–7051." The cost per pregnancy using healthcare system costs (NOT patient costs) was also far lower than in international studies: "The projected cost to the healthcare system per pregnancy was AUD$5387". 📚Research Alert: Unraveling the Complexities of Geriatric Health 📚 🔬 Title: Association between Muscle Fatigability, Self-Perceived Fatigue, and C-Reactive Protein in Hospitalized Geriatric Patients 🌟 Authors: Carmen Hoekstra, Myrthe Swart, Ivan Bautmans, René Melis, Geeske Peeters Geriatric care is an ever-evolving field, with continuous research shedding light on better care strategies. A recent study focuses on the intriguing relationship between muscle fatigability, self-perceived fatigue, and the levels of C-Reactive Protein (CRP) in elderly patients. The research team set out to understand the utility of the capacity to perceived vitality (CPV) ratio - a novel measure of resilience in geriatric patients. This measure, based on grip work and self-perceived fatigue, has previously been linked to pre-frailty and post-surgery inflammation. 🔎 Involving 104 hospitalized geriatric patients, the study analyzed the CPV ratio's association with inflammation, measured through CRP levels. Surprisingly, the results revealed no significant association between CRP levels and CPV or its components. This opens up questions about the role of CPV in assessing frailty and recovery capacity in older adults. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dHvhg8Yq #PhysicianInsights #MedicalPractice #GeriatricCare #CME #DoctorsUpdate #MedicalResearch

📢 The latest issue of the British Journal of Nursing (BJN) is here. 🩺 In this edition, we shine a spotlight on lymphoedema, delving into the challenges faced by patients and the critical importance of understanding their experiences. We also kick off a two-part series on the intriguing relationship between diabetes and kidney disease, with a focus on primary prevention for kidney health. Our articles explore a wide range of topics, from improving the assessment of older patients admitted to virtual wards to enhancing inpatient communication through digital health records. We underscore the significance of diversity in clinical research. This issue includes a special Urology Supplement in collaboration with the The British Association of Urological Nurses (BAUN). We discuss risk factors for urinary tract infections in intermittent catheter users, present a usability assessment of continence products, and examine how technology is transforming continence care in one ward. We also delve into a nurse's dedicated efforts to improve care for men with prostate cancer. 👩⚕️ Subscribers via #OpenAthens, access the issue: https://lnkd.in/etwu5yV #Nursing #Healthcare #Lymphoedema #KidneyHealth #ClinicalPractice #MedicalResearch #Urology #ProstateCancer #ContinenceCare

Endometriosis is estimated to affect 1 in 10 people assigned female at birth. Alarmingly, 60% experience symptoms early in life. This translates to middle school and high school classrooms with several individuals struggling in silence, managing pain and a lack of focus, potentially due to undiagnosed endometriosis. The time to diagnosis is alarming, averaging a staggering 7 years. Without intervention, this can lead to severe chronic pain and fertility issues. Thankfully, with early diagnosis, much of this suffering could be prevented. However, teenagers present a unique challenge. Traditional diagnostic methods like vaginal ultrasounds, biopsies, and laparoscopies can be invasive and overwhelming for young patients. This is why the advancements highlighted in February's F&S are so promising, especially for adolescents. These non-invasive tools, including highly accurate microRNA tests from blood or saliva and AI-powered MRI scans (eMRI), hold the potential for a more comfortable and earlier diagnosis. Collaboration between reproductive endocrinologists (REIs) and pediatricians is crucial to develop effective screening protocols. By working together, they can unlock brighter futures for countless young people.

A new research has been published ✅ Abstract: "The aim of the study was to examine the association between sonographic estimated fetal weight and obstetrical and neonatal outcomes in women delivering macrosomic newborns, with a particular focus on understanding how antenatal suspicion of impending macrosomia influences obstetrical management decisions. Findings revealed that women with estimated fetal weight ≥3800 grams had a higher cesarean delivery rate and lower operative delivery rate compared to those with EFW <3800 grams. Primiparity, diabetes mellitus, and maternal obesity were identified as independent predictors of cesarean delivery in pregnancies with larger estimated fetal weight. Despite the higher cesarean delivery rate associated with larger estimated fetal weight, no improvement in maternal and neonatal outcomes was observed. The study's outcomes underscore the pivotal role of fetal weight estimation in shaping obstetrical management decisions, urging a critical review of its influence on clinical practices to enhance maternal and neonatal outcomes while minimizing unnecessary interventions". https://lnkd.in/dy9U4Pvy inshirah sgayer shannan Lior Lowenstein Raneen Abu Shqara
