4. Watch his body language

A person’s body language will tell you everything you need to know about them. In fact, about 80-90% of the meaning of a message is contained in body movements.

If he’s showing some signs that he is interested in talking to you, then make a move to talk to him. If he looks disinterested, then don’t bother. [Read: Does he like me? 41 subtle signs and body language guys can’t hide]

5. Brush past him and say “excuse me!”

If you’re in a crowded area, such as a bar, concert, or school, you can “accidentally” brush past him and bump into him. Act surprised and say, “Oh, excuse me! I’m so sorry!”

This is similar to the whole “dropping your books” routine in which he offers to help you pick them up. It’s a subtle way to get his attention and, hopefully, get him to say something to you.

6. Ask him for help

Guys love to help girls do things. It plays into their hero complex and makes them feel like Superman. [Read: Damsel in distress – why men find women who ask for help irresistible]

If you need him to reach something in a high place or pick up and move something heavy, it’s a good strategy to open up a conversation. Remember to thank him profusely and ask him if you can repay him for his help.

Conversation topics to not talk about with a guy

Of course, when you talk to a guy, you want him to enjoy it. You don’t want to bring him down with negativity or make him uncomfortable in any way, so here are some things you should NOT talk about with a guy.

1. Why your life sucks

No one likes a Debbie Downer. Even if your life really does suck, don’t tell him about it! [Read: How to make life easier – 20 steps to go from exhausted to effortless]

If you do, he will think you’re an energy vampire because you are sucking the life out of him. People want to talk about happy things, not things that will depress them.

2. Focusing too much on his features

Sure, you might think he’s the hottest guy who ever walked the face of the earth. While it’s fine to compliment him once, you don’t want to go on and on about how handsome he is.

So don’t dwell on his big muscles or how perfect his teeth are. Stick to talking about other things. [Read: 43 hot ways to give a guy a rock-hard boner and mistakes many girls make]

3. His past loves

If you’re romantically interested in this guy, why on earth would you want to bring up his past girlfriends? Remember, you are trying to get him interested in you, so you want to steer clear of talking about any other girls – especially the ones he might have been in love with.

You don’t want him to suddenly realize that he’s not over one of them and go groveling back to her! That would defeat the purpose, right?

4. Demand extravagant things

Maybe you have high-end tastes. You like fine expensive wine, going to fancy places, and other nice things in life. If he hears about things like this too much, it will turn him off. He might think you’re a gold digger. [Read: 46 shallow traits of a superficial person who’ll only use and discard you]

Even worse, if you indirectly or directly ask him for some of these things, it will be a big mistake. He will purposely not pick up what you’re putting down.

5. Painful memories

During a conversation with him, he might talk about something like one of his parents or siblings passing away or some other really difficult times in his life.

While you might be curious, don’t ask him too much about these types of things. You don’t want him to dig up all those painful memories. This will just make him depressed, and you really want to keep things on a happy note. [Read: Keeping secrets in a relationship – 42 must-know rules and exceptions]

6. Anything overly controversial

Controversial topics can be fun to talk about and debate when you’re with people you know really well, but it’s probably a bad idea with people you don’t know well.

Sure, they might be open for a good debate. But they might not be, and you might find out that you have wildly different opinions, which could turn him off.

Final thoughts

It can be really hard to think of things to say on the spot when you’re with a guy you like or someone you want to get to know better.

You’re so focused on making a good impression that you get brain freeze and you suddenly can’t even remember your own name. [Read: 80 dating questions to ask them before you get past the talking stage]

It’s horrible, right? We’ve all been there.

The key is to think about things you can talk about beforehand. Have a range of topics to jump to when things start to move toward the awkward side of the scale.

This doesn’t mean asking the poor guy too many questions. It means having the odd conversation starter to keep things flowing when you might start to feel a little like the conversation is drying up. [Read: 35 flirty questions to ask a guy and find out if he’s interested in you]

A good conversation is two-sided, so take things slowly and make sure that you don’t suddenly start babbling about yourself out of nervousness! Show him that you would like to know him better. If you can do that, you’ll easily be able to connect on a deeper level.

The best topics to talk about with a guy aren’t focused on ‘yes’ or ‘no’ questions. They’re designed to instigate a further conversation and to keep things flowing. Be creative, be a little flirty, have some fun, and remember to give your input, too.
