VP/HR — Organ harvesting in eastern Ukraine

Question for written answer E-001565-15
to the Commission (Vice-President/High Representative)
Rule 130

There is a currently much disturbing information on the Internet to the effect that, with the knowledge of many, if not all, the representatives of the Ukrainian authorities, teams of specialists have been launched at the eastern front and behind the lines to harvest human organs for transplantation which — as was the case in Kosovo previously — are taking organs not only from dead soldiers, but also from those who are seriously, or only slightly, wounded, and according to some sources even from civilians. The organs harvested are then sold for cash. Does the High Representative know whether these reports are true or not? If this information is correct, will the High Representative include this matter in her talks with the Ukrainian authorities aimed at resolving the ‘Ukrainian crisis’ and in the context of cooperation with Ukraine within the framework of the Eastern Partnership?
