Ancient Lycia

The empire that the Athenians established in the years after 478 BC was an entirely new phenomenon in the history of Greece, and the basis of much of the brilliant development of Athenian culture in the fifth century. Its growth and collapse was the key event in the history of the period, after the defeat of the Persian invasion. Yet this important historical phenomenon remains baffling to study. New developments in various fields have made urgent a revision of existing approaches, which largely originated in the first half of the last century. Advances in archaeology have hugely extended the possibilities of writing an archaeology of the empire. The accepted chronology of many key inscriptions has been powerfully challenged, so that new narrative reconstructions become possible. Relevant new documents in languages such as Lycian have become available. Understanding of the Persian empire which was the parallel, and in a sense the model, with which the Athenian empire interacted has been transformed in the last quarter century. Broader developments in historiography (microhistory; history from below; and, post-colonial theory) invite us to pose new questions.The aim of this collection is not to offer a final word on any of the problems, but to give a sense of the possibility of a new generation of studies of the empire.

THE CULT OF DIONYSOS IN ASIA MINOR
IN THE ROMAN IMPERIAL AGE

Making his presence, which can be traced long before the Archaic Age, deeply felt mainly in Hellas, Asia Minor and then in Rome throughout the ancient world, Dionysos, depending on the place and time, appears before us sometimes as a god of grape-wine, sometimes as a god of theatre and acting arts and sometimes as a religious power shaped according to the local needs, however, he has generally been a god of nature representing the fertility and abundance. According to the inscriptions, Dionysos was mentioned with many epithetons in Asia Minor of the Roman Imperial Age, and that he was a god of nature bringing abundance-fertility and his many other features can be observed by these epithetons. Depending on the long stated customs, the cult of Dionysos in Asia Minor survived throughout the Roman Imperial Age (especially in the II-III. Century A.D. with festivals, cult associations and structuring, artists (musicians, players, dancers) that served his cult. According to the written records, festivals such as Dionysia, Lēnaia, Anthestēria, Trietēris organized in the name of Dionysos were celebrated. Dance, music and play competitions were made in these festivals maintained by the rich citizens or directors and not commonly known cult rituals were performed. Besides the associations of synodos artists called by different names in different times in the large cities of the west, cult associations broad in scope such as thiasos, speira or cult member groups with large audience in various names were active both in worshipping and these festivals. In order to achieve this, undoubtedly, both artist associations and cult associations had to have a well organized governing structure. Names were given to the cult members according to the task taken. These members also had to pay a membership fee in order to be a member or to continue to be one. Actually, these fees were as important as the epimeletes in the mainta-nance of these associations. In addition, they were supported both mate-rially and spiritually by the Roman emperors or provincial governors. Although the paganic religious activities in the lands of Asia Minor under the control of Rome were left to the free will of the cities, they would not be strong without the respect shown for the cults of the emperors, emperor and the Roman goddess (Dea Roma). The worshipping of Dionysos could only develop with the close relations with the emperors and the Roman Empire. Correspondingly, supporting a paganic cult significant for the people, the Roman Empire gained the sympathy of the people and also kept them loyal to Rome. The deification of the Roman emperors began with General Marcus Antonius, who was wellcomed as “New Dionysos” on his arrival to Ephesos, and continued in the Roman Imperial Age. During this period the associations in Anazarbos, Ankyra, Ephesos, Teōs, Aphrodisias and Sardeis characterised Emperor Hadrianus, Commodus and Caracalla by this epitheton. Thus, they deified them by considering them equal with Dionysos. Dionysos also had common worship with imperial or Dea Roma cult besides the common paganic worship of Zeus and Dēmētēr. Like all other paganic religions, the cult of Dionysos broke down with the strengthening Christianity with which it had opposite doctrines and finally with the acceptance of Christianity as the official religion of the state. However, many features of the Dionysos cult continued to exist in Asia Minor both in Christian features and local cultures and traditions. Today it still continues this effect.

Arkaik Çağ’dan çok daha eskilere götürebildiğimiz varlığını, coğrafi olarak başta Hellas, Küçükasya ve sonraları Roma olmak üzere tüm Antik Çağ coğrafyasında etkin bir şekilde hissettiren Dionysos, yer ve zaman farkına bağlı olarak, bazı yerlerde üzüm-şarap tanrısı, bazılarında tiyatro ve sahne sanatlarının tanrısı, bazılarında ise yerel ihtiyaçlar doğrultusunda şekillendirilmiş dinsel bir güç olarak karşımıza çıkmıştır. Ama genel olarak bereket ve bolluğu temsil eden bir doğa tanrısı kimliğine sahip olmuştur. Yazıtlardan anlaşıldığına göre Roma İmparatorluk Çağı Küçükasyası’ nda birçok epitheton ile anılan Dionysos’un, bolluk-bereket getiren bir doğa tanrısı olduğu ve diğer başka özellikleri gene bu epitheton’larından anlaşılmaktadır. Küçükasya’daki Dionysos kültü Roma İmparatorluk Çağı boyunca (bilhassa M.S. II-III. yüzyılarda), öncesinden gelen bir geleneğe bağlı olarak şenlikleri, kült dernekleri ve yapılanması, kültüne hizmet eden sanatçıları (müzisyenler, oyuncular, dansçılar) ile varlığını sürdürmüştür. Yazılı belgelerden bu dönemde büyük ve zengin kentlerde hâlâ Dionysia, Lēnaia, Anthestēria, Trietēris gibi Dionysos adına tertiplenen şenliklerin kutlandığını; masrafları, epimeletes olarak bildiğimiz kentin zengin vatandaşları ya da yöneticileri tarafından karşılanan bu şenliklerde külte ilişkin dans, müzik ve oyun yarışmaların yapıldığını ve herkesçe bilinmeyen kült ritüellerinin uygulandığını öğrenmekteyiz. Bilhassa batı kesimlerdeki büyük kentlerdeki, farklı dönemlerde farklı isimlerle anılan synodos sanatçı derneklerinin yanında thiasos, speira gibi daha geniş kapsamlı kült dernekleri ya da en yaygını mystai olan çeşitli adlar altında toplanan geniş kitleli kült üye grupları hem tapınımda, hem de bu şenliklerde aktif olmuşlardır. Şüphesiz ki bunu gerçekleştirebilmek adına gerek sanatçı dernekleri gerekse kült dernekleri, iyi organize olmuş bir idari yapılanmaya sahip olmak durumundaydı. Bu derneklerde üstlendikleri görevlere göre adlandırılan kült üyelerinin, üye olabilmeleri veya üyeliklerini sürdü-rebilmeleri için ödemek zorunda oldukları aidatlar da vardı. Esasen bu derneklerin finansmanının karşılanmasında bu aidatlar, en az epimeletes’ ler kadar önemliydi. Ayrıca Roma imparatorlarının ya da eyalet yöneticilerinin hem manevi hem de maddi desteğini alıyorlardı. Zira bu dönemde Roma egemenliği altında bulunan Küçükasya topraklarındaki pagan dinsel yaşam her ne kadar kentlerin özgür iradesine bırakılmışsa da, imparatorlara, imparator ve Roma Tanrıçası (Dea Roma) kültüne gösterilen saygı olmaksızın güçlü kalamazdı. Küçükasya Dionysos tapınımı da, tamamıyla imparatorlar ve Roma İmparatorluğu ile kurulan güçlü bağlar sayesinde gelişebilmiştir. Bununla paralel olarak da Roma İmparatorluğu, halk için önemli olan pagan bir kültü destekleyerek, hem halkın sempatisini kazanmakta, hem de böylece onların Roma’ya olan bağlılığını sürdürmek amacını gütmekteydi. On the basis of archaeological, numismatic, and (mainly) epigraphic attestations, B.Öztürk,Roma imparatorluk çağı Küçükasaysı’nda Dionysos kültü (Istanbul 2010), studies the cult ofΔιόνυσος in Roman Asia Minor. After general remarks about the god, he presents a geographically arranged catalogue of the relevant inscriptions with brief comments (ph. of some texts). On 196-209, Ö. provides a register with explanations of the most important terms found in the inscriptions, and on 210/211 a list of epithets.

Lykia Bölgesi, Anadolu'nun, güneybatıda Akdeniz'e uzandığı Teke Yanmadası'nda yer alır. Bölgenin kuzeydoğusunda Pamphylia, kuzeyinde Phrygia ve Pisidia, batısında ise Karia Bölgeleri bulunmaktadır. Lykia doğu-batı yönünde 120; kuzey-güney yönünde 60 km'dir ve böylelikle 5083 km2 alana yayılmıştır. I Dağlık bir bölge olan Lykia'nın en yüksek dağı güneydeki 3086 metrelik Kızlar Sivrisi ile Beydağlan'dır. Lykia'nın iç kısımlannın en karakteristik coğrafik özelliği, kuşbakışıyla, bölgenin büyük bir kısmını kapsayan bir atnalı ile karşılaştınlabilecek büyük dağ sıralandır.2 Bölgenin merkezindeki büyük dağ sıralannın yanında, bunlardan derin vadilerle aynlmış dağlık alanlar vardır. Lykia Bölgesi'nin topoğrafyasında dağlar kadar nehirler de belirleyici bir öneme sahiptir.3 Bunlar, doğudan batıya doğru Alakır Çayı (Gagas?), Limyros (Göksu), Arykandos (Başgöz-Aykırıçay), Myros (Demre Çayı) ve Ksanthos'tur (Eşen Çayı). Bu nehirlerden en önemlisi olan Ksanthos, Antik Dönem'de Lykia kültürünün merkezi konumundaydı. Bölgenin yerleşimi, bu dağlar ve nehirlerin oluşturduğu vadiler ile nehirlerin sahilde oluşturduklan alüvyon ovalarda yoğunluk kazanmaktadır. Sahil yerleşiminde aynca, denizyolu ulaşımının kolaylığı ve deniz aşın ticaret de rol oynamıştır. Lykia'daki doğallimanlar bu yüzden önemlidir.

The Greek civilization, whose legacy remains visible to the present day, developed in several places on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. The Greeks often came into contact with different, sometimes significantly older and more developed cultures that helped them to advance in the sciences, arts and trade. One such crossroads of civilizations was Anatolia, a land that was the literal meeting place of east and west with an incredibly diverse population. This was reflected in the diversity of its cultures, languages and religions. There is a growing volume of new research – papers, articles and monographs – aimed at determining at least in part how these ancient societies defined themselves. The answer to this relatively complex question can only be sought in the written and archaeological evidence. We can get to know the Hellenes from written sources and their unique artistic heritage, while grave art helps to fill in the rich mosaic of their Anatolian neighbors. The term “Greeks dwelling beyond the sea” is a paraphrase of the name for the Greeks in foreign sources (Yaunā), which referred to the inhabitants of the distant lands beyond the western frontier of the Persian Empire. In this case, the term refers to the Greeks who crossed the Aegean Sea and settled on the Anatolian mainland and nearby islands.

There is a general agreement among scholars that the name Lycaonia derives from Luwian *Luka-wani, i. e. "inhabitant of Lukka". This interpretation was introduced by Goetze (1954 [1]) and accepted by Laroche (1976 [2]: 17) and later put under scrutiny by Melchert (2003 [3]: 14) and Simon (2019 [4]). Also Carruba (1996 [5]), Durnford (2013 [6]: 62-63), Schürr (2016 [7]) have accepted what is reported by the chronicles of the Hittite kings: invaders from Lukka (Bryce 1992 [8]) would push towards the Konya Plain. Of course, these records (Hawkins 1995 [9]: 29) are very distant from the first mention of Lycaonia in Cyropaedia by Xenophon around 370 B.C. Another impending problem is how they might be reflected in Genesis, whose historical background is not easy to pinpoint. Paradoxically, some light might come from what seems at first most uncertain. First, because in the rarefied picture of Biblical proto‑history, Lamech is the only Cainite to deserve a full-fledged myth after Adam.

From the Neolithic age mankind has transmitted the rituals of his own period after thousands of years with meaning attribution to megalithic structures. Within the history of civilization, different societies have developed their own building types and these constructions reflected the allegories of their own society. Expressions can be conveyed to concrete as painting, sign, color or figure, or can be kept alive in areas such as form, function, material and fittings as the subject of construction. All these facts should be considered as '' indicator '' in order to reveal the unique cultures. In this study a method for allegorical analyses was created and stylizations were drawn with the photographs of the tombs of Lycia. The analyzes are given under headings; function, form, facade, color-pattern, interior parts & component. With this allegorical critical analysis method, it will be possible to solve the hidden meanings in prehistoric and ancient historic period. Consequently allegory analysis study is also a research for the cultural significance on architectural constructs intensifies aesthetic and functional aspects. Öt: İnsanoğlu neolitik çağdan itibaren megalitik yapı gruplarına yüklediği anlamlar ile binlerce yıl sonrasına kendi dönemlerinin ritüellerini aktarmıştır. Uygarlık tarihi içinde farklı toplumlar kendi yapı tiplerini geliştirmişler ve bu yapılara kendi toplumlarının alegorilerini yansıtmışlardır. Çalışmada Lykia uygarlığı'nın özgün kültürünü ortaya çıkarmak için mezar yapıları, mimaride alegorik eleştirel analiz yöntemi doğrultusunda; işlev, cephe, donatı, renk-desen başlıkları altında incelenmiştir. Yapılan analizler, geliştirilen alegorik eleştirel analiz yönteminin, özellikle antik dönem mimarlık yapılarında uygarlıkların yaşamlarını, kültürlerini, duygularını anlamımıza yardımcı sistematik yol olduğunu kanıtlamıştır. Bu yöntemle özellikle prehistorik dönem insanlarının amaçlarını, tabletler gibi yazılı kaynakların olmadığı dönemlerde, alegorilerde saklı yan anlamlar üzerinden çözülebileceğini söylemek mümkün olacaktır. I have tried to apply three criteria so far: 1) Genesis' proto-history contains allusions to historical peoples, shrouded by some well-known mythology in a period identifiable with the second half of the sixth century B.C. and Homeric Lycians comply to this description, because their myth goes back to Iron Age at least. 2) The second criterion is to give a paradigmatic value for Genesis to the Lycian myths in which the fight with a serpentine mythological enemy is involved. Certainly, if the "gestation period" for Genesis was late sixth century, then at that time Homeric epic cycles are a proof that certain themes were already circulating. Leto's mythical fight against Python fulfils this criterion, because she is a mother-goddess that might have provided a mirror for the "the mother of all living" Eve (Gn 3:20). With the due proportions, this parallelism between Eve and Leto comes to rescue the so-called "prophecy" of Gn 3:15 from nonsense. Eve and her seed are bound to fight the snake's seed in a narrative which has allowed the future enemies to talk to each other friendly. Among the Lycian myths which may be consistent with this original pattern of a "talkative monster", we should have a look at what is said about the Lycian warrior Amisodarus (or Isaras, LLES 243, 246; HE 41, 118, 164, 553), who fed the Chimera according to Homer (Il. 16.28). Besides, the Lycian adopted hero, Bellerophon, who slays the Chimera, a serpentiform monster, offspring of Echidna (Hesiod, Theogony 295-308), is available to represent the "seed of the woman" engaged in the mysterious fight described in Gn 3:15. From Bellerephon's myth we might draw inspiration to discover who is the people bound to challenge the celestial sphere in which Cain seems to inhabit. The Gygean Lake, not far from Sardis, the capital of Lydia, was home to Echidna and the birthplace of the Lydian royal lineage (Robert 1982 [1]: 334-352). 3) The third criterion is to check whether the application of a certain mythological framework is motivated by a historical background where to find the underlying ideological reasons. Lydia is the last great Anatolian empire before the arrival of the Persians and also the protagonist of an epoch-making betrayal, according to Herodotus, because Lydians revolt after the conquest, triggering the Persian plan to make a nation of merchants out of a race of warriors. At this point, another work hypothesis can be advanced: the clash between the two brothers Cain and Abel would represent the conflict between two eponymous heroes.

Phaselis’ten Ele Geçen Yeni Yazıtlar Işığında Hadrianus’un Doğu Akdeniz’deki Seyahatleri

Buradaki makalede, 2012 yılı Phaselis Antik Kenti ve Territoriumu Yüzey Araştırması sırasında bulunan ve Phaselis’teki Hadrianus Takı ile çevresindeki düzenlemelere ait olan yeni epigrafik belgeler tanıtılmaktadır. Bunlardan iki tanesi imparator Hadrianus’un eşi Sabina ile kayınvalidesi Matidia’ya adanmış ithaf yazıtlarıdır. Diğer yazıt ise Hadrianus Takı arşitrav blokları üzerindeki ithaf yazıtının bir parçası olup bu adamaya yönelik önceki çalışmaları doğrulayan bir fragmandır. Makalede söz konusu yazıtlar ele alınırken, Hadrianus’un eyaletlere düzenlediği iki büyük seyahatin Doğu Akdeniz ve özellikle de Pamphylia-Lykia kısmı konu edinilmektedir. Çalışma, Hadrianus’un imparator ilan edilmesi ve ardından benimsediği devlet politikası üzerine bir giriş ile başlamaktadır. Bu kapsamda imparatorun eyaletleri denetlemek ve status-qou’yu korumak amacıyla, ilki M.S. 121-125, diğeri 128-132 yılları arasında olmak üzere imparatorluğa bağlı eyaletlere düzenlediği iki seyahati hakkında bilgi verilmiştir. İmparator’un Küçük Asya’nın güney sahillerine hangi seyahati sırasında uğradığı yönündeki tartışma ele alınmış ve Phaselis’ten ele geçen belgelerin bu konuya katkıları ortaya konulmuştur. Bu bağlamda özellikle Perge, Attaleia ve Phaselis’teki epigrafik belgeler irdelenmiştir. İmparator’un ilk seyahati sırasında bölgeye uğramış olabileceğine yönelik en somut belgeler Perge kentinden ele geçmiştir. Attaleia’daki veriler Perge’dekiler kadar somut değildir. Phaselis kentinden ise bu seyahate yönelik herhangi bir belge bulunmamaktadır. İmparatorun ikinci seyahati sırasında Pamphylia ve Lykia kentlerine uğradığına yönelik her üç kentten de somut belgeler bulunmaktadır. Gerek daha önceden yayınlanmış gerekse yeni bulunan Phaselis yazıtları ve Hadrianus’a ithaf edilmiş kapı yapısının arşitrav blokları üzerine kazınmış karşılama yazısında kaydedilen tarih Phaselis’lilerin imparatorun ikinci seyahatine yönelik hazırlıklar yaptığını göstermektedir. Yazıtların buluntu yeri ve kapı yazıtının deniz tarafına bakması imparatorun kente deniz yoluyla geldiğini ve Güney Limanı’nda karaya çıktığını göstermektedir. İmparator ailesinden hayatta olan, imparatorun eşi Sabina da bu seyahat sırasında Hadrianus’a eşlik etmiş ve Phaselis ziyaretine katılmış olmalıdır.

This paper concerns the interpretation of mythological images decorating two tombs dating to the later sixth and early fifth century BC in Asia Minor and their meaning for understanding the cultural and social history of the peninsula following its incorporation into the Achaemenid Persian Empire in the 540s BC. 

The contributions are threefold: a) the explicit articulation of interpretative approaches to and problems in understanding the use of myth in ancient memorial art within broader trends in theories of interpretation; b) new identifications of subject matter in the case studies addressed; and c) the proposal of an approach that transcends sticking points in determining contextual meanings to consider broader patterns in imagery use, with a view to contributing to an economic landscape-oriented history.

Söyleşiye, Almanca yazdığınız makaleleri Türkçe'ye çevirerek kitaplaştırma gibi ülkemizde pek rastlanmayan bir uygulamanın amacını sormakla başlamak isterim; neydi amaç ve yerini buldu mu? Almanca makalelerimi bir ilk olarak kendi dilimize çevirmek için; sıradışı içeriği "okunur ve tartışılır" umuduyla, değerli çok zamanımı, sonunda bildim ki, boşuna "feda etmişim". İnsanımızın kendi topraklarından Batı'ya sürgün süren ve çok özel olan bir kültür ve sanatın niceliğini "bilme" hakkına saygıyla da yapmıştım bunu. Tutmadı maya, amaca ulaşılamadı. 50'yi aşkın Arkeoloji Bölümü var ülkemizde; belki yeni kurulanların çok azında okundu ve okutuldu ki 1000 adet kitap, kültür dostu insanlardan gördüğü daha çok ilgiyle, 6 yılda tüken-di. Yaşadığım düş kırıklığı nedeniyle de ikinci baskıyı yapmamada kararlıydım. Bodrum'da Akademia Vakfı'nın ısrarlarına, özellikle Halikarnas Balıkçısı'na bir vefa borcu olarak, karşı duramadım. Kitabı elime aldığımda, "iyi ki dostların bu yöndeki kararlılığı kırmış direncimi" diye geçirdim içimden. 150 yaprak ek metin ve 200 ek resimle genişleyen ve tam anlamıyla yenilenen bu baskı, umarım, Arkeoloji ve Sanat'la görücüye çıkmanın ardından beklediğim tartışma ortamına zorlayacaktır eskiçağ bilimcilerini; doğrusu nedir bilinecektir. Ve ben ancak o zaman dinlenmiş olacağım. Kitabın 723 resim içeren 175 levhayı çevirdiğimde ilk dikkatimi çeken, bir Klasik Arkeolog olmanıza rağmen Anadolu Uygarlıklarını Göbeklitepe'den başlayarak geniş bir bakış açısıyla, bir bütünlük içinde gözlemlemeniz oldu. Depuis l’Antiquité, l’humain redoute que le repos de ses défunts soit troublé par des tiers. La Lycie antique, cette petite région isolée du sud-ouest de l’Anatolie située au carrefour des civilisations grecque et anatoliennes, ne fut pas en reste. Entre le VIe siècle a.C. et la fin du Ier siècle p.C., ce peuple, ayant développé une culture originale en raison de sa position géographique, a utilisé l’imprécation funéraire afin de protéger ses sépultures. Ces traces épigraphiques écrites en lycien et/ou en grec ont évoluée différemment à travers les époques et les lieux, notamment à travers leurs formulaires-types. Notre interrogation principale a été de savoir si ces malédictions funéraires étaient le fruit d’une acculturation totale avec la Grèce ou si elles étaient plutôt représentatives de la juxtaposition des diverses cultures qui ont traversé la région (hittite, louvite et perse), enracinant ainsi ce procédé protectif dans le substrat magicoreligieux anatolien. Il appert que, malgré le fait que la Grèce continentale ait elle-même utilisé la malédiction au sens large sur son sol propre, nous n’avons pas trouvé de traces d’imprécations funéraires sur son sol. En Anatolie, la malédiction funéraire n’a pas, non plus, été employée de manière uniforme ou constante entre les grandes civilisations s’étant partagé la souveraineté de ce vaste territoire, mêmes si elles étaient friandes de malédictions en tout genre. En effet, si certains peuples l’ont utilisée de façon anecdotique, comme les Perses, les Babyloniens ou les Assyriens, d’autres ne l’ont d’ailleurs jamais employée, notamment les Hittites. Toutefois, les divinités citées et les types de menaces des nombreuses autres malédictions rédigées par ces peuples et leur prédécesseurs ressemblent bien aux exemples lyciens étudiés. C’est du peuple louvite, qui nous a légué nombre de malédictions funéraires et dont le schéma imprécatoire ressemble à s’y méprendre au premier formulaire-type lycien, que cette pratique sur les tombes en tant que tel semble être issue. Seules originalités puremment lyciennes : la menace légale et le risque de devenir impie ou sacrilège en cas de profanation de sépulture.

La Lycie, territoire situé au sud-ouest de l’Anatolie, avait, durant l’Antiquité, la particularité de receler de nombreux oracles. Ceux-ci fonctionnaient selon divers vecteurs divinatoires, c’est-à-dire que la parole divine — en l’occurrence celle d’Apollon, dieu grec de la divination — était transmise à travers différents médiums : parfois il s’agissait de poissons (ichthyomancie), d’autres fois d’osselets (astragalomancie) ou de tables alphabétiques, à une occasion d’eau (hydromancie) et de songes (oniromancie). Or, malgré ce foisonnement oraculaire, nul n’a à ce jour tenté de dresser un portrait complet des sanctuaires divinatoires de la région ; un projet que nous nous proposons à présent d’entreprendre.

Étant donné la documentation limitée sur le sujet, l’ensemble des sources disponibles, qu’elles soient archéologiques, épigraphiques, littéraires ou numismatiques, ont leur place dans cette étude. À la lumière de celles-ci, nous avons cherché à établir pour chaque site, lorsque cela était possible, l’époque à laquelle les activités oraculaires avaient commencé et s’étaient terminées, quelle était la procédure suivie, la nature des installations, la structure du clergé en place, le niveau d’achalandage, la clientèle visée, la renommée, etc.

Nous avons ainsi réussi à fixer le nombre d’oracles dans la région, tâche qui n’avait point encore été exécutée avec précision, à onze : Patara, Tlos, Kyaneai, Soura, Limyra, Tyriaion, Kitanaura, Olympos I et II, Oinoanda et Kibyra. Sur le premier des sites, l’oniromancie était pratiquée, au second le mode divinatoire est incertain, au troisième il s’agit d’hydromancie, les deux suivants d’ichthyomancie, les six derniers comptaient deux sites astragalomantiques et quatre sites alphabétiques. La Lycie était donc, surtout à l’époque romaine, un véritable réceptacle pour une panoplie de traditions divinatoires différentes, qui ont peut-être pu se côtoyer toutes en même temps au IIe siècle p. C. Certaines d’entre elles, l’oniromancie et l’ichthyomancie, revêtent, par ailleurs, un caractère étrange aux yeux des Grecs et leur origine serait plutôt à mettre en lien avec des pratiques oraculaires hittito-louvites datant du second millénaire a. C. Nous sommes d’avis que ces dernières, malgré le gouffre chronologique qui sépare les témoignages anatoliens des sources gréco-romaines, ont pu perdurer, sous une forme quelque peu altérée, au cours des siècles en Lycie et notamment donner naissance à un type d’oracles inconnu du monde hellénique : les sanctuaires ichthyomantiques.

-Urban Water Distribution Structures in Patara-

Freshwater springs are very limited in the immediate vicinity of Patara. Underground sources and rainwater collected in cisterns must have played important role in catering to the daily needs of the city. However, local resources were insufficient as a result of the city's growth and increased traffic in the harbor. Rising demand for water has necessitated a 22,5 km long water supply system. The whole water supply and urban distribution system were examined in a project (TÜBİTAK Project No: SOBAG-108K116) entitled “Research on the Water Line of Patara Regarding Archaeological, Architectural and Water Engineering Aspects”. In this study, the reservoirs which were used in the urban water distribution system and water distribution lines that reach different parts of the city were presented.

The theater of Tlos represents one of the best preserved monuments of the city. The theater, laid out
on an east-west axis, is located on the slope bordering the city from east. With its three-storey stage
and large auditorium (cavea), this theater was once one of the major theaters of Lycia in terms of
its architectural design. A small temple located on the top level of the auditorium also makes this
theater very special among western Anatolian theaters. The entrance to the auditorium is provided
by two vaulted passages (paradoi) located on the northern and southern sides, while two additional
vaults provide access to the horizontal walkway dividing the auditorium into two sections. In
addition, two stepped walkways reach to the surrounding wall at the top level of the auditorium
from the east. The auditorium is divided into two sections through a horizontal walkway (diazoma).
The lower part of the auditorium is formed of 20 rows of seats, while the upper one is formed of 16
rows of seats. The audience arriving at the theater was able to reach to the upper level through a
narrow vertical walkway formed of steps. The semi-diameter of the orchestra, slightly exceeding
a semicircular shape, is 20.50 m. The stone seats reserved for prestigious people (proedria) are
placed above the horizontal walkway. Another distinctive feature of the theater is the fl oral and
fi gural architectural decorations observed on the façade of the stage. The inscriptions uncovered
here demonstrate that the theater witnessed several renovations in the Roman period. However, the
architectural details and an inscription mentioning the restoration of the theater in the 1st century
BC imply that the construction of this theater might have begun in the Hellenistic period.

Lycian Civilization, considered to be “Hellenic”, has been an issue in prehistoric science and archeology since the 19th century. This foreign identity attributed to Lycia was first based on the art of the region (and the artists), called “Hellenic”; then the ‘Hellenization’ of Lycia was
deemed complete when the Greek script and language was adopted in the Hellenistic period. However, neither the Anatolian sources of the art and artist, nor the Anatolian sources of the writing were taken into consideration in this thesis. Moreover, the fact that the Greek script and language was disseminated in this territory by the Macedonian Alexander the Great was ignored. Although culture and art in Archaic Ionia were endemic to Anatolia, Archaic Ionia was deemed Hellenic because the script and language was Greek. On the other hand, in Archaic and Classical Lycia, although the writing and language was local, Hellenic identification was ascribed due to the art, deemed to be ‘Hellenic’. “Which identifies origin, writing or art?” This question was never raised. It has been considered that “where the writing was in Greek, then the language should also be Greek”. This induction (of the Greek language) by a noble minority was disseminated to all the people of Lycia. However, there were contradictions, such as the fact that the Phrygian and Luvian languages were spoken for centuries without usage of writing, and this was ignored. All this “evidence” was deemed satisfactory to make Lycian civilization “Hellenic”; no discussion took place about the “thought” of the Lycian people or their works of art. However, “thought” is the main identifier of origin and it formulates art according to its content. In the context of this article, it will be seen that there is no “Hellenism” either in the themes selected for the works of art, or the historical content, natural and realistic description of Lycia, but that there is the “Anatolian” and there is the “truth” in an oriental way. Further, a Lycian noble may also be said to be ”un-Hellenic” in that, his tomb may be located in the city, in the Agora and not separated from the people’s lives, and because when he dies, he will become a god, not a “hero”. His beliefs are of Anatolian source, thus it should not be surprising that the local cults flourish even at the beginning of the Christianity. The Lycian worshipped in nature; his altars were the rock. His temples and tombs were formed in an Anatolian fashion. As documented on the “Inscribed Pillar”, the Hellenic names of the gods and goddesses in inscriptions should be because of the requirement of the writing and translation into Greek. Even if the name of the king was Pericles, he became a god, unlike Pericles. His portrait does not reflect the ideal beauty of Hellenic art. On the contrary, it describes a “barbarian”, in a non-Hellenic, but a realistic oriental manner. In other words, he has taken the name, but not the thoughts of the Athenian. Finally, classical studies have not converted the notion of “influence”, which refers to the impact on artistic forms between cultures, to “acculturation”, when the subject matter is the Hellenes. There is no place for dogma, or resistance in science, but there should be intelligent questioning and examination. This is what we have been doing in Lycia for 20 years… We, the “School of Patara”, have raised awareness of the consequence of “Anatolian” sources, and this is a consequence which researchers are now writing about, as if we have never written before, in view of the orthostat relief in the vein of late-Hittite art, which came to light at our neighbor, Xanthos.
