周王朝在西周时期分封了大量驻守地方的诸侯国,这些诸侯国的家族中有不少与周王室同为姬姓,且据称这些姬姓诸侯国宗族均为周王室的分支。结合出土文献和传世文献中对这些诸侯国宗族谱系的记载,可以看到西周时期的同姓诸侯国往往并非直接从周王室分化而来,它们往往源于已经从王室分立出来的分支宗族,如周、召、毕等生活在王畿地区的世族。同姓诸侯国在政治和礼仪等级上通常逊于王畿地区的世家大族的现象,或许正和这些诸侯国在姬姓王室宗族中的地位有关。
