This is a brilliant peek into how foreign policy actually gets made, showing the internal debates driven by personal dislikes and prejudices as much as by policy and facts (or absence thereof.). There’s a lot of detail, and the book is not for everyone, but I found it absolutely fascinating. It’s rare to get such a practical and detailed picture of the foreign policy process, largely stripped of high rhetoric and the kind of self-serving language diplomats put in their autobiographies. If you wonder how we got into that mess in Indochina, this is an excellent resource.
