Arizona Cardinals vs. Seattle Seahawks Series History

The Arizona Cardinals and the Seattle Seahawks have been playing each other since the Seahawks entered the NFL in 1976. However, the rivalry really took shape when both teams were placed in the NFC West Division during the 2002 divisional realignment. Since this realignment, the Cardinals and the Seahawks have played each other twice a season in hard-fought and intense matchups. With an extremely close overall record of 25–22–1 favoring the Seahawks, the rivalry has never been more competitive. Both teams have die-hard fans that love to see their team defeat their divisional opponent.

The Cardinals’ hatred for the Seahawks intensified when the Seahawks drafted star quarterback Russell Wilson in the 2012 draft. Wilson was a leading force in making Seattle the top team in the league during the mid-2010s, winning Super Bowl XLVIII. The Cardinals recently had a resurgence after drafting quarterback Kyler Murray with the first overall NFL Draft pick in 2019. Murray led the Cardinals to their first playoff appearance since the 2015 season with a Wild Card game during the 2021 season.

Both teams have been dominant in the NFL at one point during the previous two decades. The Cardinals made it to their first Super Bowl in Super Bowl XLIII during the 2008 Playoffs and the Seahawks made it in back-to-back Super Bowls, winning Super Bowl XLVIII during the 2013 Playoffs and losing Super Bowl XLIX during the 2014 Playoffs. This era of football made the games between the Cardinals and Seahawks that much more exciting due to the incredible talent on both teams.

One of the most memorable games between these two teams was the Seahawks’ 58–0 win over the Cardinals during the 2012 season. Marshawn Lynch of the Seahawks ran for three touchdowns and set a franchise record for points. The Seahawks’ defense created an unprecedented eight turnovers to stomp the Cardinals in one of the league’s biggest blowouts. Another memorable game was their Sunday Night Football matchup in the 2016 season where the Cardinals and the Seahawks tied 6–6. During this game, kickers on both teams had the opportunity to end the game with a short field goal, but both ultimately missed to end the game in a rare tie.
