About us
The World Bank is a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world. Our vision is to create a world without poverty on a livable planet. We are not a bank in the common sense; we are made up of two unique development institutions owned by 189 member countries: the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA). Each institution plays a different but collaborative role in advancing the vision of inclusive and sustainable globalization. The IBRD aims to reduce poverty in middle-income and creditworthy poorer countries, while IDA focuses on the world's poorest countries. Their work is complemented by that of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) and the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). Together, we provide low-interest loans, interest-free credits and grants to developing countries for a wide array of purposes that include investments in education, health, public administration, infrastructure, financial and private sector development, agriculture and environmental and natural resource management.

World Bank Food Security Update Highlights: • Since the last update on April 25, 2024, the agriculture and cereal price indices closed 1 percent and 6 percent higher, respectively, while the export price index closed 4 percent lower. • Domestic food price inflation remains high in low- and middle-income countries. • The World Bank’s latest Commodity Markets Outlook, published late April 2024, sheds light on significant developments and future projections in global food commodity markets. • The 2024 Global Food Policy Report from the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), highlights that progress in reducing undernutrition has slowed in low- and middle-income countries, while overweight and obesity has rapidly increased worldwide. The report recommends actions including tackling demand-side challenges, such as affordability and consumer preferences, together with improving food environments and addressing supply-side issues to enhance the availability of nutritious foods. Call for research proposals. To celebrate four years conducting longitudinal high-frequency phone surveys, the Living Standards Measurement Study (LSMS) – the World Bank’s flagship household survey program - is inviting researchers to submit abstracts for papers to showcase applied research in development economics using High-Frequency Phone Surveys (HFPS) data. The papers, resulting from the selection process of the abstracts received, will be presented at a conference on December 10, 2024, “The Pulse of Progress: Harnessing High-Frequency Survey Data for Development Research in the Polycrisis Era.” The data collected as part of the Living Standards Measurement Study - High-Frequency Phone Surveys project (LSMS – HFPS) have had a transformative impact on national statistical systems in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Uganda. To date, more than 100 survey rounds and 200,000 interviews have been completed. Submission details and further information about the conference can be found here -> https://lnkd.in/dkU9-HAv
