This study evaluates the haematological parameters and the observed erythrocytes morphological changesin dogs raised in Ibadan, Oyo State in the south western part of Nigeria. Blood samples were collected from sixty-four apparently healthy dogs. The haematological parameters of the blood samples collected were evaluated with the quantification of the percentage erythrocyte morphological abnormalities. The result of the quantitative count of the erythrocyte morphological abnormalities were also converted using reference guide to give the numerical/descriptive clinical grade of the associated morphological abnormalities. There was a significant difference between the haematological parameters reported in this study and the commonly used dog haematological reference ranges from temperate regions used in laboratories in Nigeria. Some of the morphological abnormalities observed in this study include echinocyte (4.12±0.35%), macrocyte (2.61±0.22%) and spherocyte (2.17±0.29%) and eccentroc...

Global meat consumption rate had doubled in most countries over the last five decades. In Ghana, total animal production has also increased over the last decade with consumption of pork and its offals becoming prominent. Therefore this study aims to evaluate factors that influence consumer preference for pig offals and the associated public health risks. One hundred (100) respondents in the Kumasi Metropolis were randomly selected through structured questionnaires and samples of offals randomly collected, sectioned, processed and examined for any histopathological indicators. Data collected were analyzed through the use of descriptive statistical tools. The results showed that edible offal preferential consumption exist within the increasing demand and value supply chain with the liver (32%) and stomach (23%) being the most preferred offal. Factors such as nutritional value, delicacy, availability, cost and level of education are noted to influence the purchasing power and preferenc...

Abstract: Nitrite is a natural component of the nitrogen cycle in ecosystems. lt is an intermediate in the oxidation of ammonium to nitrate. The elevation of ambient nitrite concentration is a potential problem for freshwater fish. This study was designed to investigate the effect of different water temperatures on the toxic effect of nitrite in a freshwater fish. Sixty Clarias gariepinus (300±1.30 g), were exposed to nitrite at different water temperatures (270C and 350C) for 48hours. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), ...

Traditionally, nursing care has been identified as an integral part of human medicine but is not well recognised in veterinary medicine as practised in Nigeria. In caring for human beings, a nurse is expected to have the fundamental understanding of disease aetiology, manifestations, diagnosis, management, rehabilitation, prevention and control. This is equally applicable to the care of animals. The role of veterinary nursing in veterinary medicine is significant considering the multitude of issues involved in the care of animals. The keeping of domestic animals is becoming popular and consequently the spread of infectious diseases from animals to human beings is on the increase. It is vital for human beings and animals to coexist in a healthy environment. The authors examine the importance of nursing care in veterinary medicine, the current situation in Nigeria, the role of veterinary nurses, the inter-professional approach to veterinary medicine, preparedness for the emergence of ...

The prevalence of anti-glycoprotein antibodies against rabies virus is studied in the sera of confined, free-roaming and stray dogs in Ilorin, the capital city of Kwara State, Nigeria. A quantitative indirect enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay (i-ELISA) was used to detect rabies virus anti-glycoprotein antibodies in sera from 116 confined, 61 free-roaming, and 13 stray dogs. The sera were collected between June and December 2008 from apparently healthy dogs. Of these 190 dogs, 81 (42.6%), consisting of 57 confined (49.1%), 23 free-roaming (37.7%) and 1 stray (7.7%), had antibody titres that exceeded the positive threshold of 0.5 equivalent units (eu)/ml against rabies, while 109 (57.4%) presented titres that were below the threshold. Prevalence of rabies anti-glycoprotein antibody was higher in the confined dogs compared to free-roaming and stray dogs. Our results indicated low anti-rabies sero-prevalence (42.6%) in the dog population of Ilorin, a transit city that lies between nort...

ABSTRACT A 21/2-year-old local bitch was diagnosed as having vaginal hyperplasia by both physical examination and histopathology. The mass, which was firm and whitish in colour, measured about 5cm in diameter, was reducible and protruded out of the vulva. Vagina cytology confirmed that the bitch was in proestrus. The mass was surgically resected due to frequent prolapses and contamination. Histopathology showed the mass to be vagina epithelium with numerous fibrous connective tissue. Trop. Vet. ABSTRACT Keywords: Uterine torsion, West African Dwarf Ewe, Ibadan A case of uterine torsion in a 21/2 year old pluriparous West Africa Dwarf (WAD) ewe raised semi intensively with adequate veterinary care before the death of the dam and the lamb is presented. The dam had been off feed for 3 days and was found straining a night before her death. The lamb was a male of 37cm crown rump length (CRL), weight, 3.0kg and showed other features consistent with a full term lamb. The post mortem findings and the predisposing factors are discussed. Serum samples from 20 out of 180 (11.1 %) apparently healthy Nigerian indigenous chickens were negative for antibodies against chicken anaemia virus using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Of the 160 positive sera (88.9 %), 12 (7.5 %) had titres ranging from 1 500-3 000, 46 (28.8 %) had titres from 3 000-5 000 while 102 (63.8 %) had titres between 5 000-11 000. The overall mean titre value was 5 845 + 2 402. This appears to be evidence of a natural outbreak of the infection since the chickens had no history of vaccination against any poultry disease.
