Presentations at AAMT 2009 were selected in a variety of ways. Keynotes and major presentations were invited to be part of the conference and to have papers published in these proceedings. A call was made for other presentations in the form of either a seminar or a workshop. Seminars and workshops were selected as suitable for the conference based on presenters' submission of a formal abstract and further explanation of the proposed presentation.

This paper describes the conceptual framework for mathematical knowledge for teaching used in the Teacher Education and Development Study in Mathematics [TEDS-M 2008] and discusses challenges associated with attempting to define and measure this construct crossnationally. TEDS-M 2008 is a study of the preparation of future mathematics teachers at primary and lower secondary levels and related policies, practices and outcomes. It is being conducted in 18 countries under the auspices of the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA). Because data entry will not be complete by July 2008, no results from TEDS-M can be shared with ICME-11 participants. However, the discussion of issues and challenges associated with defining and operationalizing mathematical knowledge for teaching in an international context will inform the participants of Topic Study Group 27 and others doing research in this area. 1 Dozens of people have contributed to the work descri...

ABSTRACT This document outlines the framework and a comprehensive plan for a cross-national study of primary and secondary mathematics teacher education (TEDS-M)sponsored by the IEA. TEDS-M is a study of the variation in the nature and impact of teacher education programs within and across 17 countries.

The overall study has three overlapping components: • COMPONENT I: Studies of teacher education policy, schooling, and social contexts at the national level. • COMPONENT II: Studies of primary and lower secondary mathematics teacher education routes, institutions, programs, standards, and expectations for teacher learning. • COMPONENT III: Studies of the mathematics and related teaching knowledge of future primary and lower secondary school mathematics teachers.

The IEA Teacher Education and Development Study in Mathematics (TEDS-M) is a comparative study of primary and secondary mathematics teacher education. It examined how different countries have prepared their teachers to teach mathematics in primary and lower-secondary school. TEDS-M paid particular attention to links between teacher education policies, practices, and outcomes. By participating in the study, countries were provided with an opportunity to conduct research on their own teacher education system and to learn from the approaches used in other countries. TEDS-M asked several key research questions: What is the national policy context for mathematics teacher education? What are the main characteristics of mathematics teacher education programs, and how do they vary across countries? What is the level of mathematics and related teaching knowledge acquired by prospective primary and secondary mathematics teachers? An additional smaller study linked to TEDS-M compared the salar...

Project Good Start investigated the effectiveness of numeracy programmes for Australian children in the year before school and the first year of schooling. Qualitative and quantitative data was collected from pre-schools, early childhood centres and primary schools, to investigate the practice and learning experiences that best support children’s early numeracy development.
