Abstract:By 1870 the Benedictine community of Newark, New Jersey staffed St. Mary's parish, its associated grammar school, and St. Benedict's College (later St. Benedict's Preparatory School). In the beginning, all three institutions had a preponderance of Germans. Over time as other immigrant groups came to the city, the ethnic composition of all three changed. A major difference between the parish elementary school and St. Benedict's Prep came with the influx of African Americans beginning in the 1930s. While St. Mary's parish and school became home to a variety of ethnic groups, including African Americans, and the school had no white students by 1969, St. Benedict's Prep did not accept black students in significant numbers until the early 1970s. A comparison of St. Mary's and St. Benedict's, and of the monks involved in ministry at these two nearby locations, shows a profound difference in engaging the African American community. The 1972 closure ...

Irish have been in Belleville, New jersey, since at least 1733, when  they were living among the Dutch. With the discovery of copper nearby, Belleville became an industrial town, and many Irish came to work in the factories. This is a small part of a larger study of the Irish in Belleville over the years, and how they adapted (or did not adapt) to a new land and culture.
Anselm's dialogues do not seem to fit in the Ciceronian tradition. A comparison of his dialogues with the work of Gregory the Great, specifically his life of Benedict, shows that Anselm fits in this tradition.
Research Interests:
This paper examines the use by Anselm of the dialogic form, and situates him within the dialogic tradition.

Edith O'Gorman (1842-1919) was an anti-Catholic lecturer. Unlike most "escaped nuns" she was in fact a former nun, having been a Sister of Charity. She tried to hide her identity, but there is enough information given in her work that a positive identification can be made. This leads to some interesting information on her background and possible motives for her work.

Origen's (185-254) comments on Romans 16:25-26 show an awareness of an esoteric teaching in Christianity that is not one that contrasts those "in the know"against others, but rather a contrast between those who understand at a basic level, and those who comprehend a deeper meaning.
