The article discusses several successive small groups of Byzantine intellectuals of the 10th century: “Anonymous Professor” and his students, which included the famous scribe Monk Ephraim and a circle of scribes focusing on the monk Ephraim, two of them, calligrapher Basil and the priest John, are known to us by name. Separately, it is worthy to pay attention to the “descendant” of the Monk Ephraim “ὁ ἀπόγονος”, who wrote the ‘Perlschrift’ manuscript in the second half of the 11th century and who remembered his famous predecessor. It is a unique for Byzantium of the 10th – 11th centuries case of tracing the continuity of the “schools” of writing and other intellectual activities. It is mostly important, that the process of emergence of the all-Byzantine capital style ‘Perlschrift’ of the second half of the 10th – 11th centuries from the Monk Ephraim’s handwriting, which was traced by paleographers according to formal criteria, receives a human dimension of the transmission of tradition from teacher to student (or descendant) within three or four generations of scribes.

Рукописи, составленные из писем: Анонимный учитель (X в.), Михаил Пселл (XI в.) и Максим Маргуний (XVI в.) / Manuscripts Сompiled of Letters: Anonymous Teacher (10th C.), Michael Psellos (11th C.), Maximos Margunios (16th C.)2018 •
The article considers a fairly common practice of compiling the codices of the original letters and other charters in Byzantium. Until now, this phenomenon in the history of the Greek book was completely unobserved. Methods. The methodological basis of the investigation is a combination of epistolography, text critics, prosopography, palaeography, and codicology. Analysis. The article investigates the codicology and the composition of a unique collection of the 16 th century compiled by the well-known intellectual and publisher David Hoeschel of the letters of the Greek scholar Maximos Margunios. This extant example of the " book of letters " provides a completely new approach to the study of the famous collection of letters of the so-called Anonymous Teacher of the first half of the 10 th century from the London manuscript British Library. Add. 36749. The study of this manuscript shows that this is either the original autograph of the Anonymous author himself, or its copy made by one of his students. The study of the manuscript and its historical context, in particular, make it possible to identify confidently one of the addressees of letters by the name of Ephraim with the famous scribe the monk Ephraim. In turn, all these observations make it possible to better understand one of the passages of the letter of courtier scholar Michael Psellos to his friend caesar Ioannes Doukas, in which Psellos writes that Ioannes makes a book out of his letters. Results. As a result, we have three examples of compiling a codex of letters as such: the earliest – the first half of the 10 th century, a short narrative passage of the second half of the 11 th century, and the 'ethnographic' example of the late 16 th century. Thanks to the really existing post-Byzantine manuscript, we can better understand the history of the manuscript of the first half of the 10 th century, and more accurately interpret the narrative of the 11 th century.
SHUMYLO Abstract: For the first time, the article thoroughly explores and introduces into scientific circulation the letter of hieromonk Anthony (former commander of the hussar squadron A.K. Bulatovich; 1870 - 1919) addressed to Emperor Nicholas II. The text of the letter itself, preserved in the archive of the Serbian Hilandar monastery on Mount Athos, is also published as an appendix to the article. This document is a valuable source both on the history of the Athos “Cossack” skete “Black Whirlpool”, and the history of “name-glorifiers disputes” on Mount Athos and the biography of hieromonk Anthony (Bulatovich). He fills a number of gaps in Bulatovich’s biography for 1912, in particular regarding his attempts after returning from Ethiopia to get the abandoned former “Cossack” skete “Black Whirlpool” to resettle his like-minded monks - former “retired military men” and “name-glorifiers”. The article discusses information and legends about the bank deposit and subsidies allocated by the Empress Elizaveta Petrovna in the 1740s to the bank accounts of the “Black Whirlpool” skete, which Antony (Bulatovich) hoped to get considerable interest from. In addition, the article discusses attempts by Bulatovich to create his own monastery in Ethiopia and the reasons for the conflict with the abbot of St. Andrew’s Skete, after which he led the radical opposition party “name-glorifiers” on Mount Athos. Despite the fact that quite a lot has been written about Anthony Bulatovich, some aspects of his biography still remain insufficiently studied. A search and study of archival documents would help to reveal many unknown or embellished facts of both the biography of this person and the history of the "Athos trouble" of the early XX century. Четыре анонимных византийских письма X–XI вв.: бытовые детали и литературная игра / Four anonymous Byzantine letters of the 10th - 11th c.: routine details and literary game [in Russian]2017 •
The article examines 4 anonymous Byzantine letters, preserved in Bodl. Auct. T. 4. 04 and published in the uncritical edition in 1925. It is assumed that all the 4 letters have been written by the same author in the 10th–11th century. Historical and philological analysis of the texts is conducted. It is demonstrated that these letters are a valuable source on the Byzantine everyday life and a unique literary monument. The annex contains the Greek text of the letters, based on the manuscript, and their Russian translation.
The personality of Protopresbyter John Romanides stands out against the other outstanding Greek theologians of the twentieth century in his striving for «otherness», which was expressed by a constant search for deep answers to those questions of theology and history that had long seemed settled and resolved for most. This striving manifested itself in all the main areas of Fr. John: creating dogmatics of a «different kind», developing his own understanding of history, expressed in the so-called «Roman theory», and also creating a special direction in theology - «therapeutic». Like the work of the proto-presbyter, professor and theologian, his life itself was a living expression of a certain aloofness in relation to the outside world. A Greek-Asian-American who lived a considerable part of his life in Athens, he always remained a «sign of contention» both in relation to contemporary Greek society and in the midst of professional academic theology and the Church hierarchy. The biography and significance of Fr. John Romanides' work is the subject of the present publication.
The article is devoted to the archimandrite Cyprian (Kern Constantine Eduardovich) (1899–1960) — orthodox theologian, graduate student of the Faculty of Orthodox Theology University of Belgrade (1925), teacher at the theological seminary in Bitole (1925– 1928, 1931–1936), professor at St. Sergius Theological Institute in Paris (1936–1960). Author is focuses on the view of archimandrite Cyprian to the scholar monasticism. It a question already attracted attention of the researchers, however this article opens new complex of sources — unpublished correspondence of fr. Cyprian and his diaries from the archive of St. Sergius Theological Institute in Paris. Life of the archimandrite Cyprian as the scientific monk examined in the indissoluble connection with his pastor activity. The author of the article comes to the conclusion, that heritage and life of archimandrite Cyprian (Kern) are one of major moments in the history of the Russian scholar monasticism: from one side, they confirmed problems characteristic for the pre-revolution scientists of monks; on the other hand, enriched this tradition, bringing in it the new aspects. Firstly, an archimandrite Cyprian succeeded to present the “standard” example of scholar monasticism, all his life was devoted to the theological science; he even refused the bishopric office. Secondly, archimandrite Cyprian distinguished the main task of the monasticism –“distribution of light” (“svetolitie”).Thirdly, an archimandrite Cyprian enriched the experience of the Russian scholar monasticism with the indissoluble connection of scientific, educational and parish pastor service and personal spiritual perfection, the center of that was the Eucharist.
It is well known that St. Philaret of Chernigov was the disciple of St. Philaret of Moscow. But when it comes to theology the question of their conceptual succession has not yet discussed in the literature. Does St. Philaret the Junior can be considered as a successor of the theological ideas of St. Philaret the Elder. The analysis made in the article leads to the following conclusions. The dominant characteristic of the theological works of St. Philaret the Junior was a “scientifi cness” – it was the intention to comprehend the church tradition in all its manifestations and levels. It can be even affi rmed that he was a perfect representative of the concept of the “spiritual scholarship” (“dukhovnaya uchyonost”) declared by the charter of 1814. That’s why there was the breadth of coverage: he made signifi cant works in all areas of ecclesiastical scholarship. But another feature of his works was a superfi ciality. The history by itself seemed to interest him more than anything else. In the area of the theology, St. Philaret the Junior, on the one hand, relied on the ideas put forward by his great teacher (in particular, it can be pointed here the teaching of St. Philaret the Elder on name, temple, grace, and royal power). On the other, he relied on the principles of “scientifi c theology”, developed by Archbishop Feofan Prokopovich. That’s why he – the historian for the most part – tried to build his system of dogmatic theology without any historical contextualization. Keywords: St. Philaret of Chernigov, St. Philaret of Moscow, spiritual scholarship, dogmatic theology, school of Feofan Prokopovich, the Russian theology, history of the Russian Church, the Synodal period.

This article is devoted to the analysis of activity of Bishop of Belgorod and Obolensk Joasaph (Mitkevich) (1724 - 1763). Vladyka Joasaph was known for his multilateral and multidirectional activity not only in the sphere of church administration, but also in other spheres: public, scientific, and political. During his ministry in the Belgorod Diocese, he let himself be known not only as a good priest, but also as an outstanding administrator, a wonderful educator, a talented scholar, and at the end of his life also as a far-sighted politician, who unmistakably foresaw new political trends and one of the first to congratulate the future Empress Catherine II on her accession to the throne, although at that time the fact that she would hold on to power was not yet obvious. Although sometimes the methods of his action could be called rather harsh, and sometimes even severe (take at least very strict punishments for ignorant or guilty priests), but in general his activities benefited the eparchy entrusted to him. On the basis of archival documents, the authors investigate the most diverse aspects of the activity of this church hierarch. The thesis is advanced that Joasaph (Mitkevich) fully implemented the ideal of the "Bishop of the Enlightenment" that emerged at the end of the 18th century.
