Medieval Kingship

Grand Duke Géza, his son Vaik (Stephen I) and other Hungarian kings were most often present in the political center of the kingdom – medium regni. The most important royal settlements, the oldest monasteries and the first bishop¬rics were located there. These included localities like for example, Esztergom, Székesfehérvár, Szekszárd, Veszprém, Visegrád, Óbuda, Győr, Pécs, Pannonhalma, Pécsvarád, Bakonybél, Tihany, Somogyvár and many others. Annually, around St. Michael’s Day the king met with his faithful (magnates, bishops, abbots and so on) in Esztergom. This important event was accompanied by various ceremonies, rituals, banquets, court proceedings, agreements with political elites, gifts or dona¬tions. Székesfehérvár was one of the most important sites in the country. Histori¬ans consider it to be the sacral center of the kingdom, whose importance grew sig-nificantly during the reign of Stephen I. All the royal coronations took place there (with the exception of the coronation of Stephen I in Esztergom). Beginning with King Koloman, the kings of Hungary were buried in the local cathedral at the tomb of St. Stephen and his son Emeric. All over the country gatherings were convened annually to Székesfehérvár. It was one of the main centers of power of the coun¬try and the Arpads met with other monarchs or received important guests there. Hungarian kings traveled around the country to other important settlements, such a Óbuda, Veszprém, Csanád, Győr, Pécs, Vác, Eger, Visegrád, Bodrog, Zadar, Trogir, Split or Oradea.

Hungary was a large kingdom and the Arpads did not only stay in the medium regni but also traveled to the surrounding parts of the country. In addition to the main royal residences, bishoprics or monasteries, they also used their courts to stay. Royal castles along with palaces and farmyards were scattered throughout the country. The kings had residences - palaces in, for example, Székesfehérvár, Várkony, Pécs, Pannonhalma or Zadar. The Composition of the 14th century chroni¬cle mentions several sites, which are designated as curia, curtis, castellum, allodium or villa. These Latin terms indicate that these may have been royal (or princely) courts, for example, Pécsvádad, Kortó, Halom, Ikervár, Zirc, Csepel, Dömös, Bákonybel, Zámor, Megyer, Ikervár, Cinkota, Csór and others. The royal monasteries together with residences, castles and courts were very important places for the monarch in the sacral topography, where they regularly stopped on the roads around the country. Most of the monasteries were founded by the Arpads in the medium regni in popular places, not far from the bishops’ settlements or the royal forests – Pan¬nonhalma, Veszprémvölgyi, Pécsvarád, Zalavár, Bakonybél, Apácsavásárhely (Tor¬nowa), Tihány, St. Andrew near Visegrád, Szekszárd, Esztergom-sziget (Prímás Sziget), Somogyvár, Báta and Hahót. From the period 1000 – 1200, 192 documents were preserved. Of this number, there were approximately 48 counterfeits or not very reliable documents, and only 17 papers (including counterfeits) also men¬tion the place of issue. These were Győr, Sóly, Székesfehérvár (3x), Old Buda (2x), Pécs, Szeged, Somogy, Zadar, Vác, Nitra, Esztergom (2x), Eger, Veszprém and Cse¬pel-sziget. Non-royal documents issued in the presence of the ruling court of 1134, 1146 and 1152 mention sites such as the Oradea, Szentendre and Mezősomlyó. In all these cases, the King issued, confirmed or sealed the deed while staying in the main residences, bishops’ settlements, the county castles, the Dalmatian towns, where the collegiate chapter was, or in other popular places.

Éste es un estudio en torno al arquetipo del rey sabio en la literatura política de la Antigüedad Tardía y la Alta Edad Media. En él se aborda el discurso de las virtudes políticas propias de la Realeza sapiencial, parte fundamental de la teología política del Alto Medievo. Fue ésta una época azotada por la barbarie y la ignorancia en la que si bien es cierto que la nueva civilización surgida de la síntesis entre romanidad, germanismo y cristianismo tuvo que abrirse paso gracias sobre todo a la labor del clero secular y el monacato benedictino, no lo es menos que en este proceso civilizador también jugaron un papel destacado algunos monarcas como Teodorico el Grande, Sisebuto, Carlomagno, Alfredo el Grande u Otón III.
En este estudio se pretende demostrar que esta acción de mecenazgo cultural regio se debió, sobre todo, a la recepción del ideal de la Realeza sapiencial proyectado por diversos autores cristianos del período. En sus obras a menudo se entremezclaron dos tipos de Realeza sapiencial: la platónica y la bíblica. La Realeza platónica sería una Realeza sapiencial de corte griego en la cual el gobernante en cuanto que Rey filósofo que ha buscado la Verdad y la ha encontrado por sí mismo, podrá asumir el liderazgo carismático derivado de su dominio de la ciencia del buen gobierno que no consiste en el monopolio de la violencia, como en el caso de la Realeza militar, sino en el ejercicio público de las virtudes morales. Es el ideal de la república de los filósofos en la que la Verdad reina para que los súbditos puedan alcanzar el Sumo Bien a través del estudio y una vida virtuosa.
En conjunción con esta tradición helenística, los autores cristianos del Alto Medievo propusieron a los gobernantes una Realeza salomónica definida a partir de los libros sapienciales del Antiguo Testamento. Sería ésta una Realeza sapiencial con atribuciones sacerdotales según el paradigma del Rey sacerdote. El modelo de esto son aquellos reyes de Israel, como David y Salomón, presentados como monarcas sabios.

Boniface of Canossa is a figure of great importance to the political and military history of eleventh century Italy. Modern historiography has almost universally argued that Boniface gained his power through a close relationship and alliance with a series of German emperors. Most accounts see Boniface’s fall and eventual murder in 1052 as a direct consequence of the breakdown of this relationship.
However, this analysis is flawed. It rests predominantly on the evidence of a single source: the Vita Mathildis by Donizone of Canossa. This document was produced more than half a century after the death of Boniface by an author who held complex political goals, but these have not been fully considered in the discussion of Boniface. Through the examination of the charter sources, this article argues that Donizone misrepresented Boniface’s actions and that there is considerable evidence that Boniface was not a consistent ally of the German emperors.

There are two objectives behind this article. First, it seeks to trace down the pedigree of a theory described in scholarly discourse as the 'ethnogenesis model'. As is often believed, the theory originally was, essentially, an innovative concept proposed by Reinhard Wenskus, the German researcher. My article puts forth the idea whereby it was Walter Schlesinger who had laid the foundations for the theory, whose concept was further developed by Wenskus. My other purpose was to verify the basics of the theory itself, based on relevant empirical material; specifi cally, I mainly deal with original sources reporting on the ethnic composition and history of the Vandal people.

В центре данной работы стоят взаимоотношения власти и народа в их институциональном оформлении, а именно проблематика соотношения власти правителя, действующей общественной нормы и ее носителей. На широком конкретно-историческом материале, включающем традиционные и модернизирующиеся общества, прослеживаются такие аспекты данной проблематики, как характер представлений о непогрешимости или, напротив, несовершенстве правителя и политической системы, возможности правителя по отношению к действующим социальным нормам, возможности критики в адрес правителя и принудительных общественных санкций в его адрес, понятия о легитимности правителя и ее источниках, концепция высших целей существования института верховной власти и др. Используемый конкретно-исторический материал обобщается на основе формализованного выделения ключевых параметров, характеризующих данные феномены с установлением корреляций между ними, что позволяет осуществить типологизацию социумов с точки зрения исследуемой тематики.

El culto a Carlomagno practicado en la catedral de Gerona a finales de la Edad Media (1345-1484) constituye un hecho sorprendente y fascinante al mismo tiempo. Sorprendente porque es el único de estas características que se constata en la Península Ibérica y, aún más allá, en el Sur de Europa; fascinante porque dio lugar a numerosas y variadas formas de expresión que aún hoy podemos analizar, desde un rico conjunto de oficios litúrgicos hasta una serie de relatos legendarios y una amplia panoplia de manifestaciones visuales. Dichas circunstancias subrayan los particularismos del caso gerundense pero también señalan hasta que punto su estudio puede dar lugar a un paradigma historiográfico, modelo y guía para otras aproximaciones analíticas al tema de la memoria de Carlomagno en diferentes lugares de Europa. Y es que en el caso de la catedral catalana la riqueza de la documentación –ya sea documental o iconográfica- supera con mucho la de la mayoría de los casos europeos. Este estudio pretende resolver esta anomalía historiográfica y contribuir un conocimiento y difusión entre amplios círculos de historiadores de la cultura y la religión e historiadores del arte.

Las muchas y variadas actuaciones y decisiones políticas que Jaime I de Aragón protagonizó a lo largo de su extenso reinado fueron polémicas ya entre sus contemporáneos. No llama la atención, entonces, que los balances historiográficos que se han realizado y continúan elaborándose contengan visiones muy dispares y sigan suscitando controversias académicas
y extraacadémicas sobre lo crucial o lo nefasto del período para cada uno de los estados integrantes de la Corona. Fuera de cualquier discusión y valoración global del reinado de Jaime I se sitúan, por un lado, la ampliación territorial de la Corona de Aragón que se logra con la incorporación de las islas Baleares y Valencia; y, por otro lado, el desarrollo de una organización estatal extremadamente descentralizada a través de la creación de un complejo pero eficaz sistema de gestión basado en unidades autónomas con códigos legales, administraciones, moneda y sistema de pesos y medidas privativos.  En este trabajo, que toma como fuente principal el Libro de los Hechos, hemos seleccionado algunos puntos de reflexión sobre las complejas relaciones desarrolladas entre el rey y los aragoneses a lo largo de esta etapa crucial en la historia del reino de Aragón.

Las ceremonias de la realeza adquirieron un importante peso político y propagandístico en la Baja Edad Media castellana. En el presente artículo, analizamos la escenografía desarrollada en tales actos a través de testimonios literarios diversos y, de forma más específica, de obras artísticas como el llamado Libro de la Coronación de los Reyes de Castilla y Aragón, de problemática cronología y adscripción ofreciendo algunas hipótesis al respecto..

Las relaciones entre realeza, caballería y guerra fueron intensas y multifacéticas durante la Edad Media, por lo que pueden ser estudiadas desde diferentes ópticas. Una de las más significativas e interesantes es la de la génesis y formación del concepto “rey caballero”, ilustrativo de la enorme atracción que los reyes experimentaron hacia los modos de pensar y actuar de los caballeros que integraban sus huestes y sus cortes. Así, hacia mediados del siglo XII, los reyes sintieron la necesidad de verse representados como caballeros modélicos, en la iconografía de sus sellos y, especialmente, en las crónicas que narraban los acontecimientos militares protagonizados por ellos. Alfonso VIII de Castilla ilustra esa realidad. Pero la imagen caballeresca de Alfonso, asumida plenamente por los especialistas de nuestro tiempo, presenta claroscuros que es necesario analizar. Así, ¿fue realmente el vencedor de las Navas un modelo de caballería en todos los sentidos?, ¿encajaba realmente en el molde de caballero perfecto que en su época se estaba aquilatando? Creemos que no del todo, basándonos en la comparación entre las acciones militares de Alfonso, especialmente batallas campales, y las que describe la épica del momento, que fija el paradigma de líder militar caballero. De este modo constatamos que frente al ideal de caballero prudente, calculador y cauteloso encarnado, por ejemplo, por el Campeador del Cantar de Mío Cid, Alfonso nos es descrito como caballero temerario y un tanto suicida por los cronistas favorables de su tiempo.

En la política de promoción de las monjas mendicantes que desarrollaron los reyes de Castilla se percibe una tipología de “fundaciones en relación” con mujeres. Alfonso X y Pedro I colaboraron con sus amantes, Mayor Guillén y María de Padilla, y el segundo también con sus hijas, Beatriz e Isabel, para dar origen a monasterios de la Orden de Santa Clara o de sus formas previas. Estas páginas analizan unos procesos de fundación que enlazan lo personal y lo familiar con lo político, visibilizan formas de interacción entre los sexos y desvelan algunas de las fisonomías adoptadas por las religiosas que constituyeron la institución clarisa, una orden religiosa exclusivamente femenina en la que tuvieron gran peso las mujeres como agentes históricos.

Liturgie et royauté dans les monarchies asturienne et léonaise (711-1109) Resume L'époque wisigothique marque en péninsule Ibérique l'élaboration d'une liturgie royale notamment pour le sacre, dont la pratique est attestée à partir de 672. Pourtant, la monarchie asturienne puis léonaise demeure peu sacralisée et, d'une manière générale, plus éloignée de la liturgie qu'elle ne l'était à l'époque wisigothique. Et si la royauté investit à nouveau le monde liturgique grâce à Ferdinand I er (1037-1065), cette évolution est brutalement interrompue sous le règne de son fils Alphonse VI, lorsque le rit hispanique est abrogé à la demande du pape (1074) et qu'arrivent en péninsule les premiers livres liturgiques romains largement dépourvus de pièces royales, notamment de celles du sacre. Nevertheless, the asturian and then leonese monarchy remains not very sacralized and, more generally, further away from liturgical world than during the Visigothic period. And if the kingship enters the liturgical field thanks to Fernando I (1037-1065), this evolution stops brutally under his son Alfonso VI, when the Hispanic rite is repealed by the pope (1074) and when arrive in peninsula the first roman liturgical manuscripts widely deprived of royal components, in particular those for the anointing.

Thomas DESWARTE Un vent de liberté sous Alphonse VI de León (1065-1109) Les premiers fueros et la fin du « colonat » Les fueros sont traditionnellement présentés comme emblématiques d'une société de frontière « organisée pour la guerre » et marquée par une précoce « Municipal militarization » 1 : ces chartes de franchises octroyées aux communautés paysannes ou urbaines permettraient dès le x e siècle d'accélérer la colonisation et de fournir au roi de León (ou au comte de Castille) les contingents militaires nécessaires. Naîtrait ainsi une société lar-gement constituée d'hommes libres, paysans et guerriers non-nobles (la caballería villana), qui obtiendraient des privilèges et finiraient par intégrer le monde de la noblesse 2. Or, une approche plus critique de la documentation nous oblige à rejeter-au moins pour l'instant, en attendant des études diplomatiques plus poussées-une partie des sources sur lesquelles reposent ces analyses. Dans le royaume de León, l'étude des chartes de franchises sûrement authentiques ne peut en fait commencer que sur des documents composés sous le règne d'Alphonse VI (1065-1109), lorsque sont émis sept fueros royaux et cinq seigneuriaux. Ces chartes, qui établissent non pas « le droit coutumier général de la zone, mais ses privilèges, c'est-à-dire les exceptions à la règle commune » 3 , révèlent-elles alors en creux les « usages seigneuriaux » et leur corollaire, à savoir « un processus général de dégradation de la condition des simples libres » (Juan José Larrea pour la Navarre) ? Accompagnent-elles l'éclatement de l'ancien ordre public et la genèse de la seigneurie, qui reprendrait à son profit de « vieilles pratiques » mais dont l'« arbitraire » provoquerait une « aggravation des obligations géné-rales qui incombaient à la génération précédant celle des années 1060-1070 » 4 ? Une telle approche, en parfaite adéquation avec l'historiographie française dite mutationiste, repose sur trois apriori énoncés par Juan José Larrea 5 qui méritent d'être questionnés. Tout d'abord, les fueros exemptent-ils toujours de dispositions nouvelles (l'attachement à la terre, la pratique des cautions, les restrictions à toute aliénation du patrimoine foncier) ou de taxes plus lourdes (cens, corvée, ost, albergue) ? Dans ce cas, ils ne pourraient effectivement que révéler une détérioration récente de la condition paysanne 6. Dans un second temps, l'éclatement du pouvoir en de multiples seigneuries est-il une réalité ou bien est-il le fruit d'une défor-mation provoquée par l'origine ecclésiastique de la documentation archivistique ? Peut-on faire du roi un simple « seigneur féodal », alors même qu'il demeure le justicier suprême et conserve sa juridiction sur l'en-semble des habitants du royaume 7 ? Bref, ces fueros participent-ils de la « mutation féodale » en Espagne du Nord, de la mise en place d'une société seigneuriale où les droits d'origine publique sont patrimonialisés, où

The Castilian Franciscanism born closely linked to the Crown. The data we have are scarce and often legendary, but they allow us to draw a first scheme of links and interests. We analyze the performances of Fernando III, closely related to those of his mother, Berenguela I, and we compare them with those that both of them realized in benefit of the Order of Preachers in order to draw the general consequences that had the promotional policies of the Mendicant Orders.

El franciscanismo castellano nació estrechamente ligado a la corona. Las noticias son escasas y con frecuencia legendarias, pero permiten perfilar un primer esquema descriptivo de los vínculos y los intereses. Analizamos las actuaciones de Fernando III, muy relacionadas con las de su madre, Berenguela I, comparándolas con las que al mismo tiempo protagonizó en beneficio de la Orden de Predicadores a fin de extraer consecuencias generales sobre las políticas de promoción de las órdenes mendicantes.

In the early Middle Ages, monarchs spent a lot of time in the saddle as they moved from one castle, palace, court, monastery or bishop’s house to another. The ruler’s travel and personal presence were a normal and important way of exer¬cising power during this period. Historians dealing with the history of Hungary, usually just briefly state that the Arpads traveled with their court around the king¬dom. Most often they stayed in royal residences, castles, courts or monasteries. On the roads, they sometimes stopped on the property of their faithful magnates or stayed in the tent for the night. However, few sources have been preserved from the 11th – 12th centuries. Research on the travel of the Hungarian kings is therefore very limited. The law books and synodal resolutions contain unique information, which include several references to royal travel. Hungary was a large country to which the kings later added other territories. Within the travel it is necessary to determine where the main power center was and what the peripheries were. The Arpads spent lot of time predominantly in the central region of the country known as the medium regni. They visited the peripheral parts of the country only sporadi-cally. They often used royal messengers to communicate with these territories. In connection with travel, the right to hospitality and accommodation (descensus) was very important. The king and his people regularly used it when moving around the country.

Scholars of the Albigensian Crusade in 13th century Occitania have tended to focus on the dissident Cathars as the only explanation for the crusade, where they have used them as weapons in their own contemporary political and religious debates since the end of the military campaigns. This dissertation problematizes this explanation and instead asks the fundamental question; why aim the crusade against Languedoc when the Holy Roman Empire had problems with Cathars at the same time? And is the Cathars the only reason for the crusade?

This thesis has thoroughly analysed the socio-political relationships between five kin groups with links to Occitania before the crusade. The study is based on the ‘elite’ prosopographical method and is supported by theories about kin, dynastic marriages, amicitiae (friendships), and coniurationes (conspiracies) as political means. These approaches are completely new to the research about the Albigensian Crusade and have opened for a new understanding of the organisation and circumstances surrounding the society that the crusade was aimed against.

Through an examination of the marriages and alliances of the Capetian, Plantagenet, Barcelona-Aragon, Toulouse, and Trencavel kin groups it is concluded that there firstly was a bipolar struggle for power between the Counts of Toulouse and the alliance led by the count-kings of Barcelona-Aragon and the Trencavel viscounts. Secondly a pattern emerges for the Capetian and Plantagenet kings, who only became interested in Toulouse through their marriages with Eleanor of Aquitaine who had an inheritance claim to the county. Thirdly a kin-relation between Pope Innocent III and the Frankish king Philip II Augustus is explored and analysed to answer, why the Pope approached Philip about the Cathars in Occitania and not the more influential leader of the Aragonese alliance in Occitania, Count-King Peter II of Barcelona-Aragon.

literature-whether heroic poems, prose annals, genealogies, law codes, or religious poems and tracts-by asking questions about the ideological "work" a poem or a prose text does in its cultural time and place. While this approach does not directly explore the individual and even vagrant insights possibly present in given texts, it is a highly fruitful line of inquiry, especially for Chronicle entries, law codes, and some of the heroic poems more than others. During the eleventh century various Italian nobles, churchmen and cities rebelled against Imperial rule. To counter this, the Salian emperors enacted various measures to assert their authority including the construction of relationship networks and an imperial identity. This paper will argue that the developing imperial identity can be seen in the changing language used to describe collective action within the cities of Italy. It will focus in particular on the use of the term cives within imperial charters and narrative sources arguing that this term was not selected for its social connotations, but rather for its political and rhetorical value. I will argue that the term held connotations of an inviolable connection between the Emperor and his cives and that this could be used both positively to justify imperial rule and negatively to undermine rebellions.

This article offers a sympathetic appraisal of the career of Donnchad mac Briain, an over-looked eleventh-century king of Munster. In addition, it is argued that his association with the Crown of Ireland and position as a genuine and supposed ancestor of various Gaelic and Anglo-Irish families (as portrayed in bardic poetry and genealogies) suggests that he possessed a positive legacy during the medieval and early modern periods.

Druga połowa XIV wieku to dla Królestwa Polskiego okres, w którym wśród wielu nowych zjawisk obserwujemy również powiększanie się składu dworu monarszego i związaną z tym rozbudowę struktur ceremonialnych. Główni uczestnicy dworskiego "theatrum", odkrywają szeroką gamę możliwości komunikacyjnych ceremoniału, pozwalających uwypuklić ich pozycję w hierarchii. Obok gestów, insygniów, miejsca w orszaku, ubioru, istotną rolę komunikacyjną pełni architektura i wyposażenie wnętrz przestrzeni ceremonialnej. Na badacza późnego średniowiecza, próbującego zrozumieć i odczytać ten połączony zależnościami świat, czyhają zagrożenia wynikające np. z głęboko zakorzenionego w naszej kulturze pojęcia prywatności… Prezentowany artykuł jest przede wszystkim, próbą zasygnalizowania problemu, na który być może uwagę zwrócą badacze zajmujący się analizą rezydencjonalnego funkcjonowania zamku królewskiego na Wawelu w końcu XIV wieku. Powstał on w oparciu o przemyślenia jakie poczyniłem podczas zbierania i opracowywania materiałów do studium poświęconego malowidłom "graeco opere" wykonanym na terenie Królestwa Polskiego z inicjatywy pierwszych Jagiellonów. Najwcześniejszym źródłem odnotowującym zatrudnienie malarzy ruskich przez króla polskiego Władysława Jagiełłę są rachunki dworu, prowadzone przez podskarbiego Hinczę z Rogowa. Rachunki dotyczą lat 1393-1394. Jest tam wzmianka o wydatkach na farby dla malarzy pracujących w klasztorze benedyktynów na Łyścu oraz wykaz kosztów związany z pracami malarskimi wykonanymi przez malarzy ruskich w komnacie sypialnej na Wawelu ("dormitorium dni regis in castro Cracoviensi"). Prawdopodobnie w tych dwóch miejscach pracował ten sam warsztat, który po wykonaniu zleceń wrócił "ad patriam", jak określił to autor notatki w księdze rachunkowej.

Presented at the Harlaxton 2018 Symposium. The working title of my thesis is "The Distribution of Royal Patronage to the Gentry in the Minority of Henry VI, 1422-1437." It is an investigation into how - in a time so invested in personal monarchy - governance continued with an officially absent king, with the gentry and patronage serving as directive lenses into the politics of this period.

This poster shows just one small part of my ongoing research - using Social Network Analysis to explore the interpersonal relationships and socio-political networks which underpinned late-medieval government looking specifically at the 322 individuals specifically mentioned in parliamentary petitions by named members of the gentry seeking some form of royal patronage between 1422 and 1437.

¿Es posible acercarse a la Edad Media a través de Juego de Tronos? ¿Pueden observarse trazas medievales en la saga de novelas Canción de Hielo y Fuego y en la serie de televisión de HBO? A lo largo de las páginas de este libro se da respuesta afirmativa a esas dos cuestiones. A pesar de tratarse de producciones basadas en la fantasía épica pseudomedieval, es posible apreciar rastros de una Edad Media reinterpretada y adaptada. Los historiadores que aquí se dan cita analizan esas influencias, cada uno desde su especialidad, llegando a la conclusión de que esas producciones culturales deben mucho a la realidad histórica medieval. Whatever their privileges in theory, in practice the military orders were not independent of secular powers, nor of the local ecclesiastical authorities, the bishops and archbishops. In order to survive and to pursue their vocation of the defence of Christendom, they had to negotiate with those who held power, to protect their lands and their incomes and to ensure that they could export resources and personnel to the East. They relied on the powerful elites of Christendom to assist them in their work, but those in power usually expected some return for their assistance, and not simply the reward of prayer. This chapter explores the military orders' relations with kings, princes and popes, and how far the costs of trusting in princes outstripped the returns.

The fundamental argument of this paper is that the charter of 1014 to the arimanni of Mantua was designed to balance or even limit the growing power of the Canossan family. Three charters were issued to the arimanni and the cives of Mantua in the eleventh century. The first in 1014 by Henry II, the second in 1055 by Henry III and the last in 1091 by Henry IV. Both the 1055 and 1091 charters have been conclusively linked to royal attempts to undermine the position of the Canossan family by such authors as Hampe, Castagnetti and Moreselli. But, although the 1014 charter issued almost identical rights in a very similar manner, I do not believe that it has been previously connected to a comparable move against the Canossans.
