Medieval and Renaissance manuscripts

Complete transcription and reconstruction of the canon a13 for Christ and his Twelve Disciples on the Apostles Creed. This piece is found in both the Eton Choirbook and the Baldwin Manuscript. This edition contained both the fully realized canon as well as a modern reconstruction of the original monophonic version of the canon, as found in the manuscripts.

An edition of the anonymous labyrinthine ballade on three canons, "En la maison Dedalus" (In the House of Dedalus) from the Berkeley Manuscript.

This edition includes a modern transcription of the music, the original manuscript excerpted, poetic and literal translations of the text, reconstruction of the 11-tier labyrinth upon which the music is overlain, and pedagogical materials/explanations of the musical and poetic medieval Ballade forme-fixe.

In this article there are catalogued all manuscripts by Benedetto Varchi (1503-1565), member of Accademia Fiorentina and one of the leading representatives of cultural policy of Cosimo I de’Medici. The text includes: systematised letters and different works by Varchi such as Latin and Italian poems, lectures, comments to Aristotle’s works, translation of “De consolatione” by Boecius and “History of Florence” of Varchi, as well as reconstruction of his library with additional items (his books), recently discovered in libraries in Italy and abroad.

The four Milanese Libroni, prepared during Franchinus Gaffurius’s tenure as chapel master at the Duomo, rank among the most important manuscripts of sacred polyphony at the turn of the fifteenth century. Their interest, notably as the only extant sources of Milan’s flourishing musical scene under the Sforzas, has been widely recognized. In spite, however, of the attention raised in the musicological community by Jeppesen’s brief essay of 1931 and by the facsimiles published in the 1960s and 1980s, the manuscripts have never been thoroughly studied. The present book discloses the results of an interdisciplinary investigation conducted within the Polifonia Sforzesca Research Project (funded by the SNF at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in 2018–2020), in conjunction with the full digitization of the sources. Combining archival evidence (Filippi) with palaeographic and codicological data (Pantarotto, Filippi) and with a mapping of the contained repertoire (Cassia, Pavanello), the volume provides fresh elements regarding the making and the dating of the Libroni, clarifies Gaffurius’s role as the mastermind of the operation, and better situates the manuscripts in the contemporary landscape of copying, collecting, and circulating polyphonic music.

This essay provides a contextualised analysis of a set of texts that Marsilio Ficino collected in one of his extant working notebooks and probably used as a textual basis for his Commentary on Plato’s Symposium (1469). In this context, I will
discuss Ficino’s treatment of his sources, investigating specific facets of his reading and excerpting practices. Special emphasis will be placed on the Latin section of the manuscript, containing a set of hitherto unexplored excerpts from Plotinus’s Enneads. The study of this aspect of Ficino’s work aims to shed light on his methodology as well as on his philosophical outlook. More generally, the article will provide further information on Renaissance reading practices. More specifically, it will offer insight into the study of the genesis of Ficino’s commentary
