Exploring the humanity and divinity of Jesus, the Son's relation to the Father, and the agency of the Holy Spirit, it is one of five essays suggesting Johannine contributions to trinitarian discussions in the early church.

Should Russia become part of the West, or follow an Eastern path? This has been a centuries-old discussion among Russian intellectuals. For Westernizers in Russia, the " West " symbolized progress, freedom, democracy, civil society, normality, and a nation-state. Their opponents saw the West as representing moral decadence in the beginning and later capitalist exploitation. This paper attempts to lay out the foundations and the evolution of the 200-year-old discussion of Russia's place in the world. It briefly examines the period of Muscovite Russia, where the foundations of the authoritarian state tradition were laid and further strengthened. The paper then focuses on the period of Peter the Great's reign, in which educated Russians became increasingly acquainted with Western European culture and started having doubts about Russia's status in the face of perceived European superiority. Trying to summarize how the international and internal developments of the 1800s and 1900s have affected the debate about Russia's place between East and West, the paper then examines the current state of discussions in Russia under Putin's leadership and finally attempts to make predictions for the future.

Pussy Riot’s surprise punk prayer at the altar of Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ Our Savior instigated significant controversy in Russia and resulted in the conviction of three Pussy Riot members on the charge of “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred.” While the Russian Orthodox Church swiftly condemned the performance as blasphemous, Pussy Riot has contended that its punk prayer is consistent with the message of the Gospels. This study investigates the punk prayer controversy in relation to the figure of the holy fool, a radical behavioral model canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church and secularized in Russia’s literary and artistic traditions.

The article examines material situation of orthodox parish clergy of the Ekate-rinburg district on the eve of carrying out church reforms by the government of Alex-ander II. The author compares a situation on city, rural and factory parishes (both state, and private plants are considered). The article is based on materials the clergy registers of the Ekaterinburg district of the Perm province. Clergy registers have high information potential, allow to reveal the main official sources of the income of parish clergy. The article examines the extent to ensure the parish clergy allotments (arable land and hayfields), housing, which could compensate for the lack of salary and natural payments. Besides, the assessment of clergy of their material position on the eve of reforms and after their carrying out is compared (at the end of the seventies– the beginning of eighties of the nineteenth century).

The article is devoted to the creation and development of the higher ecclesiastical school in Russia in the XIX — early XX century. More specifically it deals with the history of «The idea of the Academy» as the basis of this school. The topic is relevant due to the Russian ecclesiastical and educational reforms in the recent years. Having studied materials of the pre-revolutionary reforms of theological academies in Russia, the projects, analytical reports and discussions, the author shows the influence of Western scientific and educational models, on the Russian universities’ experience and theological schools’ experience and implementation of the “idea of Academy” at different stages.

The book presents a broad panoramic overview of church architecture in the Russian North between the fourteenth and nineteenth centuries. While it is inevitably overshadowed by the imperial splendour of the country’s capital cities, this unique phenomenon is regarded as the most distinctive national expression of traditional Russian artistic culture and at the same time as a significant part of humanity’s worldwide architectural heritage.

The chief intention of the book is to present the regionally specific features of the wooden churches of the Russian North, which vary from area to area for local natural or historical reasons. This approach touches upon the very important questions of the typology and classification of the multiplicity of architectural forms. The "regional view" entails giving clear definitions of the ambiguous terms "architectural school" and "tradition", explaining the origins and shaping impulses for the different regional clusters of objects.

Structurally the book presents a history of the development of wooden church architecture in the Russian North and then follows the key points of the mediaeval Russian expansion along the waterways from Novgorod into the North – he Svir’ River, Lake Onego, the town of Kargopol’ and the River Onega, the White Sea, the Rivers Dvina, Pinega and Mezen’ – those areas that still retain the most splendid pieces of Russian regional wooden church architecture. The study is based on field research and provides an up-to-date, multi-faceted view of Russian wooden architecture.

The article is based on the memoirs and interviews, and attempts to address the pastoral practice of the well known Orthodox priest, archpriest Alexander Men (1935-1990). The author examines his attitude towards reading of the Holy Scripture, to the common prayer of the priest together with the lay people, to the way he thought the new Christians should participate in the Liturgy. The author also discusses the reading practices of the congregation of father Alexander and the characteristics of his spiritual guidance. The author comes to the conclusion that the pastoral practices of the father Alexander were traditional for the Orthodox Church, but to a certain extent, he has adapted them to the needs of his parishioners. The author notes that further study of the pastoral care of father Alexander Men must contain the comparison with the pastoral practices of his contemporaries and predecessors (for example, priests Nikolay Golubtsov and Dimitry Dudko).

В статье на основе мемуарных свидетельств и интервью делается попытка рассмотреть пастырские практики известного православного священника протоиерея Александра Меня (1935–1990). Автор рассматривает его отношение к чтению Священного Писания, к совместной молитве со священником, к тому, как новоначальные христиане должны участвовать в литургии. Также автор останавливается на круге чтения прихожан отца Александра и на особенностях его духовного руководства. Автор приходит к выводу, что пастырские практики отца Александра были традиционны для Православной церкви, но при этом в определенной степени адаптировались им к потребностям его прихожан. Автор отмечает, что дальнейшее исследование пастырства отца Александра Меня должно идти в сопоставлении с пастырскими практиками его современников и предшественников (например, священников Николая Голубцова и Димитрия Дудко).

During the XIX-early XX century, the authorities deliberately pursued a policy aimed at leveling position of the Siberian Tatars and their adjustment to the Russian peasants. This occurred through the development and implementation of various reforms in the area of administrative and land-unit, education, religion.

The article deals with the «Inochentist movement» in the early 20th century in connection to the «national question» in Bessarabia. It shows the preconditions of the movement’s emergence in its pre-1917 history and explores the reactions of ecclesiastic and secular actors to the phenomenon. The threat of Moldovans’ falling away from the official Russian Orthodoxy made the authorities of eparchy and gubernia to seek a compromise. As a result, the struggle with the Inochentist movement led to the legalization of the «cultural current» in the Moldavian nationalist movement.

Рассматриваются имена, которыми в календарном обрядовом фольклоре обозначается Масленица, воспринимаемая антропоморфно. Оба основных имени – Авдотья (Дуня) и Прасковея – восходят к календарным олицетворениям христианских святых: св. Евдокии и св. Параскевы-Пятницы. В простонародном восприятии Евдокия, Параскева-Пятница, Масленица имеют много общего.

The three main thematic areas in which Dostoevsky's philosophy is built are: Epistemology, Anthropology and Religion. The establishing of the problem is set within the frames of epistemology where, mainly through Records from the Underground, the analysis of problems of cognition and antinomies to which the mind comes was made. After locating these problems within epistemology, as well as determining that they cannot be resolved within those boundaries, they are blending together in the area of anthropology. Here is the basic problem that Dostoevsky is interested in - a man, placed in the light of freedom, as the determinant of his essence. Dostoevsky’s final synthesis is shown in the field of religion. The synthesis is in Christ which is more than merely a form of moral pattern and ideal, he is God-Man in whom all antagonisms get their conciliation and sense. Thus ratio has definitely moved into a unique mystical realism in which unity is achieved in the above - empirical sphere.

В статье рассматривается параметр времени визуального восприятия объекта и связанной с этим скорости дешифровки образов, вследствие чего, для визуальных коммуникаций предлагается использовать геометрические формы, а для архитектурного дизайна и других предметов искусства, рассчитанного на более длительное восприятие, можно применять и геометрические задачи, для вложение более глубинных смыслов, нежели элементарная рефлексия. Ключевые слова: дизайн, архитектура, геометрия, форма, символика, психология, Древняя Русь, православный, храм, христианство, философия, модернизм, абстракционизм, русский космизм. Актуальность данного исследования заключена в повышенном интересе в последнее время к теме универсально дизайна и созданию безбарьерной среды для людей с ограниченными возможностями. В связи с этим рассмотрение основ психологического восприятия тех или иных цветов, геометрических фигур, а также «игры» с этими фигурами, коими являются геометрические задачи, могущие быть решёнными различными способами, представляют интерес для более подробного рассмотрения в рамках учебных предметов при подготовке специалистов, пользующихся визуальным языком для передачи информации. Относительно символики основных цветов нами ранее было сделано исследование результаты которого опубликованы в статьях [1, 2] и учебном пособии [3]. Поэтому в данной статье нам бы хотелось коснуться лишь вопроса геометрии и её задач. Восприятие зрителем визуальной информации может быть разделено на два типа по времени, которое пользователь тратит на расшифровку нервного импульса, поступающего в мозг от такого органа, как глаза. Так анализ может быть краткосрочным и протяжённым. Первый вариант учитывается при создании визуальной коммуникации для навигации, информации и предупреждений. Второй, может иметься ввиду для создания объектов, более длительного восприятия, таких как логотипы, иллюстрации, произведения искусства, объёмно-планировочные решения интерьеров и экстерьеров зданий и сооружений, а также элементы дизайна архитектурной среды. Поскольку визуальные коммуникации, как и другие произведения визуальных искусств говорят со зрителем своей эпохи на привычных образах, то для выявления графических основ для европейско-российской аудитории мы обратились к исследованиям художников и философов эпохи переосмысления классических традиций наступившей в начале XX века. Это и модернизм, если говорить о изобразительном и архитектурном искусстве и русский космизм [4], если касаться философских работ исследователей, описывавших основы подсознательного восприятия цветов и геометрических форм с точки зрения анализа древнерусского искусства. К первой группе относятся и художники, такие как Василий Кандинский, Любовь Попова и другие; архитекторы: теоретик рационализма Ладовский Н.А., теоретик конструктивизма Гинзбург М.Я., занимавшийся вопросами формообразования Эль Лисицкий и др. Эти зодчие заново открывали значение простых и «чистых» геометрических форм, так как модернизм пришёл на смену эклектике и модерну, где сама архитектурная форма была завуалирована, под слоями отделки с трудом проглядывалась изначальная конструкция стен и перекрытий. Поэтому радость от простых геометрических форм, «честно» рассказывающих о конструкции была у художников и архитекторов вполне искренней. Они искали новый язык для «трудового» народа, расчищая позднейшие культурные наслоения. Поэтому их открытия представляли и для нас интерес, для последующего применения их в визуальных коммуникация. Ко второй группе философов относятся Павел Флоренский и Евгений Трубецкой и др, которых также интересовало раскрытие вложенных смыслов во внешние формы православной культуры. В диссертации впервые проводится комплексное исследование представлений о России великих князей Николая и Александра Александровичей, воссоздается система их взглядов на население Российской империи, а также экономику и государственные учреждения пореформенной России. Проведенное исследование позволяет лучше понять процесс формирования мировоззрения членов Российской императорской фамилии.

In this article I focus on a kind of user friendly and individualized religiosity, and a particular group within the parish communities: businessmen. I look at businessmen because among those who preferred the ‘user friendly’ version of Orthodoxy the social group of businessmen was very prominent. I take into consideration how religion was practiced by businessmen and how they relate to parish communities, priests and other believers. In turn, I was also interested how businessmen and their behavior were perceived, judged and interpreted by priests, and other believers inside the parish community.

The article maintains that two impediments frustrate the Evangelical-Orthodox theological dialogue. The first is the intractable challenge of internal diversity, which makes the notion of a theological dialogue between 'Orthodoxy' and 'Evangelicalism' highly problematic. The second is the asymmetric nature of the theological differences that divide the two traditions. The article proposes that a framework for theological dialogue based on particularity and specificity, and which acknowledges the asymmetrical theological relationship between Orthodox and Evangelicals, can help to advance the dialogue beyond a forum for merely identifying and clearing up misperceptions.
