This selection, chosen from the 19th century translation, contains a number of letters written in connection with the establishment of the Reformation in England, a cross-section of Calvin's correspondence with his closest friends, especially William Farel, and also Luther and Melanchthon. There are also letters of pastoral counsel and encouragement, and perhaps most moving of all, Calvin's exhortations to five young men imprisoned in Lyons, France, awaiting the day of their certain martyrdom.

The Letters of John Calvin help to dispel the common idea that Calvin was an irritable, mean-spirited slavemaster who expected to practically be worshipped and revered in all his judgments. It is obvious that there was a very stern side of the man, but these letters also reveal a man with a caring heart toward others, a collection of close, trusted friends, a concern for the adversities and trials of others, a good relationship with his wife, and enough garnered respect to correspond with certain famous leaders of his time. Whether you believe all of Calvin's theology, this book will help you to see the inner Calvin who worked hard to conform his words and emotions to the image of Jesus Christ.
