Good portion of the book is the change in Chines doctrine. Interesting portion is the current training and possible outcomes during a military engagement over south china sea area.

I disagree with the claims that this book contains extensive factual information on China's military. I also don't believe that such factual information is readily available. As the author (Roger Cliff) points out, the Chinese government and military do not publish much open-source material on the subject. I think that a better description of the book is that it offers very thorough and professional analyses and interpretations of the information that is available or has been surmised. This is probably the best that can be done since China hasn't been involved in any war since the 1979 invasion of Viet Nam, in which it received a very bloody nose.

Chapters 1 - 3 and 5 - 8 describe the organizational structure, doctrine (always big in any military organization), personnel, training, logistics, and organizational culture. I thought these chapters were interesting, if only because a simple counting of troops and tanks doesn't give a very good indication of a military's performance in war and battle. The author cites the performance of the German army on the Eastern Front in WW II and the performance of the Iraqi army in the Second Gulf War in 2003 as supreme examples of this.

Chapter 4 provides a very general discussion of weaponry. For example, it discusses PLA Air Force development of 4th and 5th generation fighters and PLA development of modern tank designs. There are no discussions or tabulations of weapons performance and tank or artillery characteristics.

Finally, Chapter 9 offers a very boring, although perhaps an intellectually rigorous, investigation of the likely outcomes of China initiating wars to seize Taiwan and then also against the Phillipines to seize some contested islands in the South China Sea.

I would rate the book as 4- or 5- Stars for well-grounded interpretations of the likely effectiveness of the Chinese military in a future war but only 3-Stars for being overall pretty boring and not really offering a lot of hard information on the subject.
