Writing texts is probably the best-known application of Large Language Models (LLMs). But can an entire textbook be written with the help of ChatGPT and similar tools? In recent months, Springer Nature has developed a functional system for AI-assisted book writing. While the system cannot take over the task of developing original ideas for users, it can translate ideas into structures that serve as a basis for the next steps of editorial revision. This way, when writing a book manuscript, time can be saved, and knowledge can be made available faster. At the same time, authors with their expertise and competent professional editors continue to play an essential role in ensuring high-quality content. Students of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz used the prototype of the system for the first time in the winter semester of 2023/24 to write a new textbook, which is expected to be published later this year. They were guided by technology specialists from Springer Nature and edited by fellow students and students from Edinburgh Napier University. On June 6, Vivien Bender, Henning Schoenenberger, Christoph Bläsi, and Rocco Raso will present the project together with the students at #UFFestival. The audience can interact with the system themselves in an interactive workshop to develop an understanding of how such tools can be used productively and responsibly in the scientific publishing of the future. 🍕 📝 What does ordering a pizza online have to do with the publishing process? Most of us today are used to being able to log into an app and order anything from our food to clothes at the click of a button, and track its status. This experience is quick, seamless and natural to a lot of us. 60% of researchers tell us that they expect to have that same digital-first user experience when publishing their research with us as. To meet this expectation, we've put researchers firmly at the centre of product and system development at Springer Nature Group. Snapp, Springer Nature’s Article Processing Platform, is a great example of this. Instead of building on restrictive systems, we've embedded new technologies right from the beginning to create a truly digital author experience. Here are five benefits that Snapp provides for our authors: ✅ Faster publishing process and reduced turnaround times ✅ Easy identification of the best journal for their research incl. a one-click transfer function ✅ Convenient verification of eligibility for #OpenAccess funding or discounts ✅ Simple identification of the best peer reviewers and editors for their paper, aided by #AI ✅ Faster and more thorough research integrity checks All of these features allow researchers to focus less on the publishing process itself and more on what they enjoy most: their research. 🚀 Thanks to Jeff Stonefield, Marta Rolak, Anita Patel and the whole Snapp team, and to our academic community for their feedback and guidance as we continue to develop the platform. 👉 More on Snapp in Jeff's Springboard blog: https://bit.ly/3X3HDOU #BePartOfProgress #AcademicPublishing

Where I Work is an award-winning photography feature from the journal Nature. It celebrates the many roles and types of research undertaken by scientists globally, and challenges stereotypical perceptions of what a scientist does and what they look like. A selection of the portraits is currently on display as a free outdoor exhibition across King’s Cross, London. Meet Biologist Cristina Cuiabália Neves. Her and her team are dedicated to maintaining a nature reserve that is home to many endangered and threatened species: https://lnkd.in/e9rB6j_x Check out all featured scientists: https://lnkd.in/e4cuZxgk

The urgency of the climate crisis is clear. Action is imperative. But how should we act, when the long-term impacts of our actions are difficult to grasp and the future is so uncertain? Solving problems in a safe, collaborative environment can help us think out of the box and build empathy — crucial skills in a warming world. https://lnkd.in/eRmqzDcw

A company—and its culture—are its people. In the latest The Source blog post, Gregor Karolus and Jessica Gedamu talk about the business of people. They discuss how the values a company embodies are echoed in every interaction between employees and how that in turn shapes the customer experience. 🤝 It's a thought-provoking read that reinforces an essential truth of business: A company's success is largely determined by those who are part of it. There are health and financial ramifications to space debris which are only set to grow. With tens of thousands of satellites set to be launched into orbit by 2030, additional challenges will be created for scientists and researchers unable to study space due to resulting debris. Springer Nature’s eighth yearly Science on the Hill event saw Republicans and Democrats gather to discuss the importance of protecting people, the planet, and scientific research from space debris with a panel of experts.
