Kunstler knows how to tell a good story of any sort, and this is an engaging coming of age tale, highlighting how he, an emotionally neglected child from a broken home, navigated the hazards of late adolescence before his judgment truly matured. Perhaps for the benefit of young male readers, Kunstler pares down his usual prose to a sparing, objective account of facing and if not surmounting, at least circumnavigating obstacles common to most teenaged boys. At the same time, he was freighted with some heavy generalized anxiety that accompanied his developmental crises. I hope that this book would hearten any young man trying to find his own way.

Fear and Loathing in New York City

Full disclosure: I think James Howard Kunstler is one great writer. His insights can be brilliant and he can turn a phrase with the very best of them. I own all his books, even the ones long out of print. I like the guy. I don’t always agree with him, and I rarely agree with his predictions. This book, partly about his anxiety and doom issues, may help explain why.

His family was borderline disfuntional, despite being educated, healthy and well employed. He suffered anxiety, panic attacks and lousy shrinks. But he also had great jobs, lots of girlfriends and some pretty decent buddies. And hung out with Hunter Thompson! (Didn’t much like him).

Growing up myself in New York in the sixties and seventies, I found a lot of great memories in this book. I didn’t have the disfuntional family or the anxiety, but I did get to go to the college he wanted to attend. If you remember New York at that time, you will love the book. If you don’t, this is your chance to experience it. You won’t regret it. If, like me, you are fan of Mr. Kunstler’s writing, you will gain a great deal of insight into where he is coming from. And you’ll love reading it.
