Hrytsak: “The lie stained with blood, greed and fear for the committed crimes – this is the true face of Russian special services. The situation with the passports of killed mercenaries is a glaring confirmation.”
The Security Service of Ukraine releases another proof of Kremlin concealing the mass casualties of Russian mercenaries employed by Wagner PMC, unofficial unit of the Russia’s General Staff of Armed Forces, on the territory of other countries.
It’s been exactly a year since February 7, 2018, when more than a hundred of Russian “ikhtamnet” [they’re not here] were killed after they took part in a flippant attack during a cease-fire against Syrian opposition forces in the area of Deir al-Zur. Participation of Wagner PMC fighters in this cynical attack was directly paid for by Russian businessman and “the Kremlin chef” Mr. Prigozhin, available to SBU materials show. “Your task is to snatch the oil refinery, away for a decent prize,” is a literal quote translated from the original documents available to the SBU.
The SBU identified 206 Russian mercenaries of the so-called “Prigozhin’s offensive”, most of whom participated in terrorist activity in Donbas in 2014-2017. This list was published last October. In addition, the SBU held special briefings and made public a series of informational materials

confirming death of at least 64 members of Wagner PMC: 57 citizens of Russia, including two with parallel Moldavian and Ukrainian citizenship, six citizens of Ukraine and one citizen of Armenia.
Yet Russian authorities continue to lie to its people and the global community, de-facto refusing to recognize all killed members of Wagner PMC as deceased persons. According to the order of Russian top leadership, the cover-up involves not only the Main Directorate of General Staff of the Armed Forces and the FSB, but also Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The SBU publishes yet another evidence of this statement, the photos of the domestic passports of 57 Russian citizens who died on February 7 last year in Syria - anyone can personally check that the Russian government lies by verifying the validity of these passports on the resource of the Main Directorate for Migration of Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs.
During a check, only for four persons out of 57 killed members of Wagner PMC (Ananiev K. B., Ignatiev A.V, Nikulin O.A, and Solomatov S.V.) the system reports passport invalidation ‘owing to the death’; passports of two more individuals (Vertinskyi V.V, Ganchierov S.G) are listed as ‘seized, destroyed’. The remaining 51 passports continue to be valid, even one year after the death of the mercenaries.
Such cynical cover-up takes place against the backdrop of a number of completed journalistic investigations of Western and Russian mass media, which not only confirmed the SBU information, but have also published additional evidence of the death of over 30 Wagner mercenaries. These data are backed up by testimonies of their relatives about the circumstances of death in Syria, photos of death certificates and burial places of mercenaries.
Detailed information on each of the 64 “ikhtamnet” killed in Syria was published by “‘Mirotvorets’ Public Centre for Investigating the Signs of Crimes Against National Security of Ukraine.”
At the same time, the SBU does not rule out that the cynical concealment by the Russian authorities of the deaths of mercenaries is used by Mr. Prigozhin, the top command of the General Staff of Russian Armed Forces and the commanders of Wagner PMC for personal enrichment, through appropriation of the “earnings of dead souls” as the money continues to flow to official salary accounts of the regular employees of this terrorist unit. In this case, it may mean about USD 2,000,000 of earnings.
Commenting on the published information, SBU Head Vasyl Hrytsak noted, “The whole world is witnessing a complete Russian lie. The lie about the absence of regular Russian troops in Donbas and about non-implication in downing of Boeing MH-17, the lie about the absence of Russian mercs from Wagner PMC and their large-scale human losses in Syria, the lie about the non-involvement of officers from Russia’s General Staff of Armed Forces in Skripals poisoning attempt in UK’s Salisbury, the lie about the non-involvement of Russian mercenaries in killing of Russian journalists in the Central African Republic and their role in suppression of popular protests in the Sudan. The lie is stained with blood, greed and fear for the committed crimes - this is the true face of Russian special services. The situation with the passports of killed mercenaries is a glaring confirmation of this.”
The SBU also identified the fact of deaths of two more persons from the list of 206 Wagner PMC mercenaries (published by the Service in September 2018):
- Elizarov Oleg Vladimirovich, DOB 18.04.1967, citizen of the Republic of Kazakhstan, native of Taldykorgan, Wagner ID M-2701;
- Marchenko Viktor Nikolaevich, DOB 02.02.1968, citizen of the Russian Federation, native of Smolensk.
The Security Service of Ukraine does not rule out that these mercenaries were killed in Sudan, since we have confirmation that several members of the last year's “Prigozhin’s offensive” under Deir al-Zur (Syria) took part in the suppression of popular protests in that African country in December 2018 - January 2019.
The SBU continues to inform the public and will soon publish additional evidence of the terrorist activity in Ukraine of the employees of Wagner PMC, the unofficial unit of Russia’s General Staff of Armed Forces. As the SBU Head Vasyl Hrytsak noted during the presentation at the London Security Conference in London: “We have to use joint coordinated efforts to ensure daily reporting of the truth to the global community, including to Russian civil society, about the crimes of Russian intelligence services in other countries, about the lie of the top leadership of the Russian Federation on the events in the world, about the REAL CAUSES OF SANCTIONS, about the democratic freedoms and opportunities of a free person shamefully denied by Russian authorities to its citizens.”
