Onkyo TX-NR838: Spellbinding entertainment with Dolby Atmos

Onkyo sound is 'Emotion. Delivered.' now with Dolby Atmos.

Drivers don’t judge sports cars on top speed alone. Acceleration, cornering, and braking are equally important. It’s the same with A/V receivers- wattage is an indication of loudness, not sound quality. The real test is current. High instantaneous current realizes ultimate control of the speaker drivers for accurate and musical audio reproduction, from the most delicate piano passages the thunderous roar of an orchestra in full flight. High current is the cornerstone of our amplification philosophy, and no other brand can match Onkyo for dynamic driving power. We don’t just translate signals into sound. We create sound you can feel.

Spellbinding entertainment

Destined to intoxicate hi-fi enthusiasts as much as hardcore film and game lovers, the TX-NR838 Network A/V Receiver combines pure analog power with the latest in high-resolution audio and video processing. This heavyweight receiver is built around Onkyo’s 'Emotion. Delivered' high- current amplification concept with a massive customized transformer and discrete Three-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry. Hi-fi credentials are cemented with Pure Direct Analog Path, a selectable mode that shuts down all digital circuitry when you’re listening to LPs or other high- quality audio sources. Signals are routed via the phono or analog inputs to the amps for pristine sound that’s completely free of digital noise. Devotees of high-resolution, meanwhile, can stream their network-attached 5.6 MHz DSD or 192/24 hi-res albums using the remote app, while listeners seeking an instant fix can enjoy music from smartphone via inbuilt Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The TX-NR838 is also packed full of cutting- edge features for movies and gaming, with 4K/60 Hz-ready HDMI terminals, HDCP 2.2 compatibility for future Ultra HD premium content, and the sheer power -at 160 Watts/Ch (6ohms 1kHz, 2 Channels Driven, FTC- that you need for awesome audio experience.

Engineered for pure exhilaration

Best-in-class high-current capability is achieved with Wide Range Amplifier Technology (WRAT). The design is built around a custom high-output transformer, customized 15,000 μF capacitors, and low-impedance copper bus-plates. Three-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry amplification features a discrete low-impedance output stage with high-current transistors cooled by a heavy-duty aluminum heat sink for instantaneous power and extremely low distortion. Unlike some A/V receivers, the audio and video processors, DAC section, networking, pre-amp, amplifiers, and power supply are all separated to minimize electrical interference on audio signals. The culmination of over 60 years’ audio engineering experience, WRAT preserves the life and character of the master recording while guaranteeing an emotionally moving experience whether you’re listening to compressed digital music, a treasured LP, or a hi-res movie soundtrack.

Firmware upgrade available now
Dolby Atmos multidimensional sound

Onkyo is among the first to introduce the exciting Dolby Atmos surround-sound format to home theater environments. Dolby Atmos uses object-oriented mixing to layer independent audio elements through discrete channels, moving three-dimensional sound effects around the theater with astonishing realism. The format adapts to any home theater layout incorporating height channels for a more enveloping soundfield with extremely accurate directional and overhead effects.

Ready for next-generation Ultra HD entertainment

Five of the receiver’s seven HDMI inputs are based on the latest HDMI specification to support 4K video at 50/60 frames per second and 21:9 aspect ratio for theater-reference movie display. Now you can add thunderous 7.2-channel surround-sound to blockbuster 4K 50/60 Hz games and movies for a breathtakingly realistic entertainment experience. The TX-NR838 also supports the latest HDCP 2.2 DRM copy protection standard via HDMI Input 3 and the main output. Hollywood studios, satellite broadcasters, and internet video streaming services will adopt HDCP 2.2 for future 4K and Premium Studio Content releases.

Audio streamed via Bluetooth is enhanced with Onkyo’s Advanced Music Optimizer, a DSP mode that restores compressed files to close to their original fidelity for beautifully full and natural sound.

    Bluetooth beware!
    4 Stars
    Bluetooth beware!
Onkyo fan here. The 838 is the 2nd one I've purchased new. The reason I upgraded to the 838 was for some of the updated features, especially bluetooth connection capabilities. Therein lies the reason I'm writing this review. I've had the receiver over 2 years now and a few months ago noticed something wasn't right with the sound when streaming through the bluetooth. With the Christmas season coming I got terribly busy and didn't have time to check into it... until recently. Let me first say that through numerous parties and gatherings the bluetooth streaming capability was a huge hit. Multiple devices have connected multiple times. This last week my son brought a friend over and was going to show off the system. I was at work. He called and said the bluetooth sounded funny and that the main screen on the receiver "goes black" after 3 seconds once bluetooth has been selected. Long story short, the bluetooth has partially crapped out. When I got home I decided it was time to look into this and indeed the display on the unit goes black, and the sound sounds like garbage. We get sound, but only through the main, front, left and right speakers.... no subs, no center, no surrounds. A huge disappointment as this was THE main reason I decided to upgrade from my old Onkyo in the first place. BTW, all other inputs and selections work and sound as they always have (great!) So I call tech support... of course I'm about 4 months out of warranty. I explain to the guy that this is typical of my luck, however, I am still very interested in getting the unit fixed. "Okay" he says, "what state are you in?" Kansas. "Ohhhhh, the closest regional tech repair place is in Michigan, 10-12 hours away." So, I would have to send the unit in (how much do you think it would cost to send this beast UPS 800 miles!?)... PLUS.... $80 just to check it out, THEN wait to hear from them so they can tell me how much it would be to fix it.... no way to know that cost (which again, knowing my luck it would be hundreds of dollars). So, here it sits with a built-in bluetooth feature this is busted. I do have a work around, though it means extra wires and a few more dollars invested. I bought a bluetooth receiver and plugged it into the rca AUX input on the front of the unit. The sound seems every bit as good as I remember the units bluetooth sounding and at least my family and I can continue to stream our favorite musical content. I'm just disappointed this $1000 unit didn't make it 2 years without a major hiccup. Still an Onkyo fan, but am now cautious and will be paying attention to see if others have issues. As a note, the tech on the phone said this was the first he'd heard of an issue exactly like mine. Just my luck.

Spent a lot of time researching this purchase, I wanted something that would last as long as my previous Onkyo which was purchased back in 1998. The old one did not have the features a modern unit has, so it was time to upgrade. Listening to Leo Laporte, The Tech Guy, 4K is the future, and HDCP 2.2 copy protection is going to be required to play most of that content. This unit supports that and much more making it ready for the future.

For now, having all the inputs is great; HDMI (front and back, two out), optical and coax audio, and all the other analog connections. Powered zone 2/3 is great, have a Bluetooth transmitter attached to zone 2 and can now have wireless audio outside. Integrated wireless networking with all the built-in apps and the ability to define your own URL's. The UI is much improved, very easy to use. The physical design is very simple with clean lines and just the necessary controls exposed, everything else is nicely covered by the sturdy front flap. It supports phonographs and has the Pure Audio option. I had no problem setting it up; made all the conections and configured all the options intuitively and quickly. Very pleased. The only problems are the DLNA freezes mid-track (probably a Windows problem) and there is no power out connector. For the future, I plan on adding some speakers to my home audio, repurposing the ceiling speakers, and taking advantage of the Dolby Atmos feature.

Something else I like is the way audio and HDMI pass-through is handled. I was concerned about how the HDMI signals would be handled if the unit were turned off. The unit allows you to configure one HDMI input for pass-through to either the main or sub HDMI outputs when the unit is off. Also, the unit automatically picks up the audio when it is on (i.e. does not pass through to TV), but the audio is passed through to the TV when the unit is off (this is configurable as well, but this is how I chose to set things up).

A software upgrade was available once I got it connected to the network. About 10-15 minutes was required for the upgrade, the unit could not be used during the upgrade. Once the upgrade completed, everything worked fine and all the configuration settings remained.

I got everything I wanted and more. Very pleased with the unit.

UPDATE: Another thing I discovered after using the receiver for a while was how to get inputs to work with zone 2. Zone 2 will play the current main input selection no problem. For instance, if you are watching DirecTV using HDMI 1 for input, that audio will stream through zone 2 simultaneously without problem. But, if the main input is switched to another HDMI input, say the blue-ray player, then the DirecTV audio is not available to zone 2 over it's HDMI input; the blue-ray player input is though if that is selected for zone 2. Bummer, what to do? Most all my devices have analog audio outputs that work simultaneously with their HDMI output. So, I just connected every device I could using analog RCA cables to different unused analog inputs on the Onkyo (e.g. Game, TV, PC) and it worked. Now I can listen to pretty much any input on zone 2 while something else is selected on the main input.

Buy this Receiver! One of only seven current, future proof receivers on the market with HDCP 2.2 certification. Don't buy anything until you read about this standard, or you'll have a $1000 piece of junk in a few years. This receiver has the HDCP 2.2 standard to allow pass through signals and not become obsolete in the next few years. I had bought a Denon top line receiver from a an electronics big box store with blue themed decor.....and promptly returned it upon learning no one had mentioned the future problems all receivers will have. Beware the uneducated blue shirts who wil sell something now to become useless in 2 years.

On the options front, this Receiver has it all, solid, heavy construction, well laid out controls and inputs, a plethora of features built in. Once on the network and the firmware updates, even more potential is unlocked. The sound is great, easily tuned with the included microphone and even in my )albeit horrible) listening area it sounds great (I have a cavernous living room with second floor overlook and vaulted 23 foot ceilings. Sound previously dissappeared up there . ATMOS features will be useful if I move and upgrade to a true "listening room", but as for now I am running a 7.2, 2 fronts, 2 front ceiling, 1 center, 2 surround. My speakers, a circa 2002/2003 complete Klipsch Reference Series, with one Klipsch 12 inch Sub and one 12 inch Polk Audio Sub, sound excellent. Reproduces crisp Classical music, solid rock music, and quality even from Pandora or iTunes Radio over my iPhone. I've used wired and bluetooth And both are palatable. Blu-Ray such as Avatar., Jurrasic Park, or my wife's Rom-Com with sappy dialog and soundtracks all reproduce as you would expect from a $1000 unit.

The iPhone remote is a great addition and I use it all the time since my phones always by my side (barely use the standard remote once it was setup).

Measurements may be problematic for some cabinets / entertainment centers. My Onkyo sticks out 1 inch from the cabinet because of the number of plugs I have in the back "pushing" the receiver forward. I could re-mediate this by cutting the back of my entertainment center out to let the wiring overhand out the back towards the wall, but I am not that picky. Check your cabinet space/specs against the receiver's size, as it is large (and heavy at 35 lbs).

I hear sounds I have never heard before in my music collection. WTF!? Previous receiver was a Sony str-de995 which was pretty good (and expensive)..... for a 2002 model. hehe. This Onkyo is an amazing piece of machinery.

I would 5 star this unit, but it is kind of "complicated" for just an average person to "get around" on the advanced settings. Yes the Audessy auto setup with the mic is easy and awesome since it fine tunes each speaker for the acoustics of each individual's room.

For the average joe, if you hit a wrong button and your settings get all messed up, you won't know what to do to fix it!! I had to factory reset my unit when all hdmi ports but one would not show video! I'm sure an 18 year old technofile can figure it out easy, but for us middle aged working class......... we aint got time for that! :D Great machine, no complaints on Onkyo's hardware end. Just make a better/easier software for on screen GUI for us old folk! (why do you have 4 different "menu" type buttons instead of one main menu).

Anyways, if you are buying this, you will enjoy the receiver!! Watch an action movie on volume 72.... or was it 82 (but it says THX Reference level; I guess what THX recommends for full enjoyment). It will blow your ducking mind!! My chest literally feels the raindrops on the leaves in the forest! Bose double cube acoustimass for satellites and center (with sub); Klipch tower left, right and subwoofer.
