Resumen

TAPIA, Guillermo  y  WEISS, Eduardo. School, Work, and Family: Perspectives of High School Students in Rural-Urban Transition. RMIE [online]. 2013, vol.18, n.59, pp.1165-1188. ISSN 1405-6666.

This article analyzes the meanings that low-class high school students from a zone undergoing rural-urban transition attribute to work. The presence of tríese young people in high school is part of processes of structural and generational change. Using a qualitative focus, semi-structured interviews were held with students in their sABEs high schools (formerly video-high schools) located in a "new rural" area on the outskirts of León, Guanajuato. The students attach meaning to work based on family and personal horizons that are broadened by their enrollment in high school, as related to their expectations for attending college and then obtaining professio-nal employment. These students also seek personal autonomy from their parents, a feeling typical of adolescence. The meanings they attach to work acquire par-ticular relevance among female students.

Palabras llave : students; family; work; high school; Mexico.
