Applications for Great South African Bake Off open

The hunt is on for South Africa’s best baker.

MANY reading this will no doubt know many people they think could walk off with the title of ‘the country’s best baker’. I know two excellent bakers, for whom baking ‘is a piece of cake’. But now these bakers will have a chance to show the world their skills, as the South African version of The Great British Bake Off is set to air later this year. I can think of two excellent backers who I am going to nag to enter. So if you know anyone who is a dab hand at baking, then get them entering.

BBC Worldwide recently announced that it has commissioned The Great South African Bake Off for BBC Lifestyle in South Africa. Its described the UK version of the show on its website as, “The the ultimate baking battle where passionate amateur baking fans compete to be crowned the UK’s Best Amateur Baker. Over the course of 10 hour-long episodes, the series follows the trials and tribulations of the competitors, young and old, from every background and every corner of Britain, as they attempt to prove their baking prowess. Each week the bakers tackle a different baking skill, which become progressively more difficult as the competition unfolds.”

Producers of the show said the series, which will search for South Africa’s finest bakers, and will be aired in late 2015. Applications to become a contestant on the show are now open nationwide and information on how to apply can be found on the BBC South Africa website. The application process will close on Sunday, 24 May.
