The Great British Bake's “bingate” episode drew the show's highest ever ratings last week, with a total of 10.3million viewers tuning in.

The programme, which saw Iain Watters voted off after stroppily throwing his baked Alaska in the bin , proved more popular than last year's final - when 9.4million watched Frances Quinn bake to victory.

Consolidated viewing figures released yesterday showed that an additional 2million viewers have caught up with the show on iPlayer since it was screened on August 27.

It drew a storm of online protest after editing seemed to suggest that Diana Beard was responsible for the ice-cream based pudding's collapse , because she removed it from the freezer for 40 seconds.

The show, judged by Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry , moved from BBC2 to BBC1 for the start of the fifth series, and is now drawing its best viewing figures to date.

Bake Off is now one of the few programmes to reach double-figures in the ratings this year. It joins the World Cup, New Year fireworks, Sherlock and Call the Midwife in cracking the 10million mark on BBC1 during 2014.
