Former Australian cricketer and IPL winning coach Tom Moody has revealed the reason behind Punjab Kings' repeated failure in the cash-rich league.
Punjab Kings were officially eliminated from the playoff race of IPL 2024 after they lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru by 60 runs at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamshala on May 9.
This is the 10th consecutive season when Punjab Kings have failed to qualify for the IPL playoffs. Punjab last qualified for the IPL playoffs in 2014, when they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders in the final.
This year, PBKS missed the services of their regular skipper Shikhar Dhawan in most of their games and Sam Curran is leading the team in their absence.
Punjab Kings currently have four wins and eight defeats from their first 12 games of the ongoing 2024 season.
According to Tom Moody, who was the coach during Punjabโ€™s first ever trip to the playoffs, feels that "inconsistency in leadership" is the main reason for the franchise' constant failure in the cash-rich league.
Notably, Punjab has had 15 different captains in 17 seasons of the IPL.
"I think it is a pretty good indication of why they have their struggles. They have many changes with regards to leadership whether it be on the field or off field.
There seems to always be that inconsistency when it comes to what direction their leadership is taking both on and off the field. Therefore, that inconsistency is naturally going to flow into what happens on the field," Tom Moody, cricket expert and commentator with official TV broadcaster Star Sports for IPL 2024, told IANS.
The Sam Curran led Punjab Kings will face Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad in their last two league games on May 15 and 19 respectively.
The 58-year-old also lauded the youngsters for showcasing their talents on a big platform like IPL. He was particularly impressed with the performance of Riyan Parag and Abhishek Porel in the ongoing 2024 season.
"The future is very bright; the IPL always uncovers many domestic players showcase their talents. Weโ€™ve seen many grow as the seasons unfold and a good example of that is Riyan Parag at Rajasthan. He has been in the IPL for a number of years, he is still a young player, but this year has been a breakout season for him and it sort of put his name on the radar as a future potential Indian player," said Moody.
"Another example of that is (Abhishek) Porel from the Delhi Capitals, he is another one that has had a really good season. It is great to have a platform like this where not only Indian players, but overseas players can showcase their skills in the best T20 tournament in the world," he added.
