Abstract

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a pathological entity resulting in viral pneumonia, which can be often detected with different imaging modalities.

Chest X-ray represents the first diagnostic tool in detecting the typical patchy consolidations, pleural effusion, and other subsequent complications, but the gold standard is represented by high-resolution chest CT (HR-CT).

HR-CT allows to detect ground-glass opacities, crazy paving pattern, consolidations, and other important features of this condition (such as air bronchogram, vascular enlargement, reversed halo sign, and lymphadenopathy), during the different stages of the disease.

In addition to patient’s history, clinical evaluation, and laboratory findings, HR-CT is also important to make a differential diagnosis with other pathological entities.

Radiology also plays an important role in the definition of a systemic involvement (hepatomegaly and splenomegaly, pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis, myocarditis, spontaneous bleeding, and neurological involvement) and in the interventional treatment of some complications (positioning of inferior vena cava filters, pleural drainage).
