The South African Medical Research Council renews funding for GARDP’s work in neonatal sepsis We are very grateful to the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) for renewing its funding for GARDP’s clinical trial aimed at evaluating much-needed antibiotic combinations for babies with sepsis. The trial will be conducted at Tygerberg hospital in Cape Town and Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Johannesburg, as well as in Kenya, and will be rolled out to other countries in 2025. “We greatly appreciate SAMRC's support in this vital work, which has the potential to provide significant insights for local clinical management and effective treatment of newborns with sepsis.” Carol Ruffell (she/her) head of DNDi GARDP Southern Africa Neonatal sepsis affects up to 3 million newborns annually, with 214,000 deaths from drug-resistant sepsis each year. Putting public health needs at the centre of antibiotic drug development to address the crisis of AMR
Info
The Global Antibiotic Research & Development Partnership (GARDP) is a not-for-profit organization that develops new antibiotic treatments for drug-resistant bacterial infections that pose the greatest threat to human health, and makes them accessible to the people who need them. It puts public health needs at the centre of antibiotic drug development to address both the immediate antimicrobial resistance (AMR) crisis and to ensure people continue to get access to essential antibiotics for generations to come. GARDP works through a global network including Brazil, India, Japan, and South Africa for antibiotic development and access. Its work is made possible by essential funding from donors and collaboration with over 100 R&D and access partners in over 20 countries. GARDP was created by the World Health Organization and the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) in 2016 and legally registered as the GARDP Foundation in Geneva, Switzerland in 2018. www.gardp.org

We warmly welcome the publication of The Lancet Series on Sustainable Access to Effective Antibiotics. This important series shines a light on the urgent global need for coordinated action to tackle antibiotic resistance and enhance access to life-saving medications. The ambitious goals it sets, for reducing mortality and the inappropriate use of antibiotics by 2030, underscore the scale of the challenge we face. GARDP is playing its part. Our innovative public-private partnership is helping to accelerate the development of, and improve access to, new and effective antibiotics. We recently had the honor of welcoming Laurent Muschel, Director of the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) at the European Commission, to the STI Clinic of GGD Amsterdam. This visit highlighted the substantial role of HERA, alongside European Union Member States - including The Netherlands and Germany, in addressing the global health threat of AMR. Together and thanks to their support, we can accelerate the development of much-needed new antibiotic treatments for serious bacterial infections for adults and newborns, and people with STIs, while also ensuring there is global access to them. #HERA #EU #AMR #AntimicrobialResistance #STI EU in Emergencies

"AMR knows no borders. We will succeed together or we will fail together. What we really need to develop is a more robust and sustainable ecosystem approach that supports public health-driven drug development linked to equitable and appropriate access." According to the World Health Organization, Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) has been declared a top 10 global public health threat and is expected to get worse unless action is taken. Join us for a live webinar on World Environment Day (5th June) exploring AMR and the environment: The challenge of manufacturing and procuring antibiotics responsibly. AMR threatens to undermine the basis of modern medicine, but AMR has implications beyond human health, including domestic and wild animals, plants and the wider environment (including ecosystems). Accordingly, a “One Health” approach is necessary to prevent and control AMR. With insights and perspectives from a wide range of experts, this webinar will focus on the connection between human health and environmental pillars of One Health, and its link to the manufacturing of antibiotics. Featuring: Courtney Soulsby - Global Director. Healthcare & Life Sciences, BSI Gareth Morgan - Global Portfolio Management Head, Shionogi & Co., Ltd Elisabete Dias Ramos - Access Project Consultant, Global Antibiotic R&D Partnership (GARDP) Maneesh Paul.
