Sex and gender issues in cardiovascular disease: Exposures, mechanisms, and outcomes

The distinct and combined contributions of biological sex and the sociocultural dimension of gender to the etiology, progression, and treatment of cardiovascular disease are yet to be fully elucidated. An understanding of how biopsychosocial disease phenotypes are shaped by sex and gender, as well as their intersectionality with other characteristics, will permit better-tailored patient-centered care and health outcomes.

The scope of this special issue of Psychosomatic Medicine is to advance the understanding of the role that sex- and gender-related factors may have in shaping biobehavioral and psychosocial processes impacting cardiovascular disease risk, management, and outcomes. We welcome studies on single sex or single-gender samples as well as studies that compare sexes and/or genders.
