I've purchased others but the sparks are not as many and long burning as this. Very easy to start fire with this one. I recommend you practice your fire starting skills before you need them. That's how I found out by experience that Swedish fire steel is better than most. You need good tinder to go along with this. I suggest cotton balls soaked in Vaseline if you are preparing ahead but can be used with lint or other dry materials. Small in size, many fires can be started even if it gets wet. Great for EDC or BOB.

This firesteel is very small, produces a great spark, and lasts a long time. I recommend anyone active in the remote outdoors consider carrying one of these on all of their trips.

I use my firesteel to light my backpacking stove and my car camping stoves. I find this more functional than matches or a lighter because it is not affected by rainy, windy, or cold weather.

I also use my firesteel to start campfires using tinder (both natural or marketed varieties). As long as you have dry tinder, it works great and I can get a fire going very quickly.

I fully recommend one of these for all outdoorsy men and women.

This is a decent price for a fire starter (most retail from between $9 and $15). The Light My Fire is small and light weight - it doesn't take up more space than having a little ring of keys floating around in the bottom of your pack - or a disposable lighter. It lasts for quite a while - mine is going on 3 years now. It works in the rain, and with just a minimum of sweat. But if money is less of a worry for you, I'd recommend checking out a fire piston which you can find from around $35 to $80. It's a bit quicker, is more reliable, and is much cooler tech. Wilderness Solutions makes several models you can choose from.

You will get sparks out of this thing and I feel that it is ok to have as a backup. The major problem with this device is the size. Over the last year or so I've been experimenting with a variety of fire strikers. And the main thing I've come to find is that the more leverage you can generate the more sparks and thus fire starting potential you generate. This particular striker is quite small and tough to really 'get into it'. If you have something like dryer lint, vasoline cottonballs, crumbled up birch bark, this striker will definitely be enough to get that started.

I have a magnesium brick in my camping / go bag. That brick comes with a steel striker and flint, like this FireSteel.

However, that one is nothing compared to this FireSteel.

When I use this I notice:

- more sparks, like 5 times more spark per strike
- sparks come more easily and with less effort
- the sparks seem to catch easier; on the other I had to use more effort to start a fire, this one starts fire almost immediately.

I don't know what it is about this FireSteel - but it works like a charm.

I am not an expert at wilderness, but this makes fire-starting easy for even me. Just create a quarter-size pile of magnesium, strike the FireSteel into the magnesium, and add tinder.

I bought 2 more, one for me for backup and one for my partner.

I carry it on my dog tags around my neck. it starts fires in almost any environment, hot, cold, dry and wet. . . but only if you have something dry for the sparks to land on. The sparks created are a few thousand degrees and one doesn't need the little scraper that comes with it as the backside of a knife will work just as well, but having them both makes it convenient. overall, this is a great product. if you let it sit for any amount of time, the outside may oxidize some and you may need to scrape it a few times before you get any sparks but it will work just fine after the oxidation is off.

He immediately opened the package and tried starting a fire in our backyard firepit. This worked great and gave him no problems. I was even able to use it successfully (and I prefer matches). He hasn't tried getting it wet and using it, but will be backpacking later in the fall. He's got several creek/river crossings on the trial he's hiking so maybe we can provide an update then.

Je l'ai acheté avec un bâton de bois gras résineux.

J'ai gratter un petit tas de copeaux de bois gras , le FireSteel au sol ( comme j'avais vu sur Youtube sur des vidéos sérieuses ) , gratté deux fois , les copeaux flambent d'une flamme lourde et intense , pendant environ 30 secondes. La temps de combustion est évidement relatif à la quantité de copeaux présents.
Bref , je recommande le FireSteel et le bois gras à tous les survivants , ou ceux qui désirent posséder l'élément feu sur eux sans avoir de doutes sur la fiabilité d'un briquet.

Ich habe nach kurzem Probieren wirklich schnell ein Feuer machen können.
Ich hatte schon einen anderen Feuerstahl, doch mit dem habe ich es nie geschafft.
Zusätzlich zum "Light-my-fire Feuerstahl" benötigt man nur noch ein scharfes Messer und ein Stück trockenes Holz. Mit dem Messer einfach im rechten Winkel über das Holz schaben und ein wenig "Holzwolle" erzeugen. Noch ein paar Stücke in der Stärke eines Streichholzes, und dann einmal kräftig über den Feuerstahl schaben. Und schon hat man Feuer.
Der Feuerstahl ist auch vollkommen ausreichend von der Größe her.
Länge: 77 mm
Länge Stahl: 43 mm und 6 mm Durchmesser
Ich hab ihn schon einige Male benutzt, aber bis er aufgebraucht ist, werde ich bestimmt ein paar Jahre brauchen.
