Abstract

Answering questions about mental health in interviews and questionnaires is influenced by lay explanatory models of mental illness, cultural factors related to stigma, and language difficulties. Also, scoring of questionnaires may be primed by culture. Although the Cultural Formulation Interview (DSM-5-TR) has some value for adults and children, relatively few studies have evaluated the value of this interview for refugees. A review is given of questionnaires, which are widely used for assessment of the mental health needs of adult and child refugees, respectively. Most questionnaires have been translated in the native language of refugees. Self-report questionnaires delivered in the native language enable reporting shameful experiences, e.g., substance abuse, sexual abuse, intimate partner violence, and self-injury. Recently, Internet-based tools for screening of refugee mental health have been developed as well and are rather promising. Standardized assessment battery is not recommended. It is important not to overburden the patients with measures.
