Abstract
Partial hospital programs (PHPs) utilize evidence-based approaches to provide specialized, intensive, interdisciplinary day treatment for children with social, emotional, and behavioral needs. They are one solution to avoiding inpatient hospitalization that necessitates removal of children from their homes, families, and day-to-day environments. These programs also give access to intensive intervention that targets change to these systems, allows practice of new skills in the evening, as well as a planned transition back to the community. A limited literature on PHPs demonstrates that these programs are effective in improving social, emotional, and behavioral problems from admission to discharge. This chapter explores the process of providing partial hospital treatment for young children in detail, from creating and implementing a program to daily structure, to models of assessment and intervention, to cultural considerations, to planning for transition back to the community. Also included are sections on integrating research and practice as well as future planning.
