COVID-19 has brought remote and online teaching to the forefront of all instructors' daily lives and routine. Even as we return to on campus classroom learning environments, many courses will remain online; be reimagined into some blend of online and face-to-face components (hybrid); or offer both in person and remote participation options (hyflex). This session will feature panelists with experience teaching in Mason's active learning classrooms, using hybrid models of course design, or using online and classroom technologies to create hyflex learning opportunities. Specifically, the session will focus on ways to engage students in active learning environments and remotely using classroom and online technologies to effectively teach students from diverse backgrounds across a spectrum of modalities. By the end of this session, participants will be able to list the major teaching technologies and active learning environment spaces and technology support resources available to...

Managing groups in any learning environment requires careful planning to ensure that students feel included, develop important career-ready teamwork skills, and learn course subject content. In part one of this session, a panel of instructors from across disciplines will briefly share their team-based assignments and general strategies for assigning groups, managing group conflicts, grading group work, and providing groups feedback. In part two of this session, participants will experience an online group activity in which each group produces a slide in a shared document gallery that contains list of questions and strategies/tips for managing groups in online environments. In part three, speakers and participants engage in a discussion facilitated by the convener. Participants will be able to describe 3-8 strategies for managing groups in an online environment that they can apply to their courses. Conveners: Faisal Mahmud, Ala Showers Panelist Speakers: Gabriele Belle (College of Sc...

BRIEF SESSION DESCRIPTION: Learn how to help students develop TedTalk style presentations. ________________________________________________________________ FULL ABSTRACT: This presentation will go over how we coach students to develop TedTalk style presentations including developing a storyboard. It will also highlight lessons learned from the professor. We will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using this teaching technique along with the techniques to assist in this developmental process. Examples will be shown of student presentations.

The Problem Technology has affected almost every aspect of our lives, including education. Higher education is shifting the dynamics of delivery methods from traditional face-to-face to online to blended modes. Many universities are reaching a physical space capacity and therefore are attempting to increase online enrollment and geographical footprint. These changes are shifting the nature of higher education and how faculty are being viewed, evaluated, and, to some degree, hired. This article will focus on highlighting the challenges and opportunities of utilizing technology within universities, especially human resource development (HRD) programs. The Solution Technology is transforming higher education. Institutions can serve as an incubator to reimagine and redesign education altogether for the good of society. Online, mobile, and blended learning have become a part of our future. An important step is tracking how these models are actively enriching learning outcomes. Universiti...

Despite the prominence of study abroad programs, few are offered in the field of psychology. The current study sought to investigate the impact of study abroad programs in psychology through a comparison of study abroad and domestic student cultural competencies. Participants included 104 undergraduate students enrolled in either a psychology study abroad program or domestic psychology courses who completed pre–post Cross-Cultural Adaptability Inventory measures. Results indicated greater emotional resilience, perceptual acuity, and cultural adjustment in study abroad students when compared to domestic students. Results suggest that by incorporating the experiential learning of study abroad with psychology’s focus on human behavior, faculty can create high-impact learning environments that foster student cultural competencies.

Purpose – Globalization is driving an increased need for leaders who possess global leadership competencies that enable them to lead effectively. The purpose of this paper is to explore the developmental experiences of global leaders in order to understand the experiences that they report to be developmental, to understand what they learned from their experiences, and to explore how the leaders learned and developed from the experiences. Design/methodology/approach – For this study, the researcher used Moustakas's phenomenological research method. Findings – Conclusions indicate that global leaders: develop through first-hand global leadership experience; learn the importance of cultural sensitivity, relationships and networks, and curiosity or desire to learn; require a unique set of global leadership competencies; are driven by curiosity, openness, and a desire to learn; and develop and learn intuitively. Originality/value – Utilizing a phenomenological research approach yield...

This study reports a statistical modification of a psychometric expatriate adjustment survey (e.g., the CernySmith Assessment or CSA) applied to expatriate missionary and humanitarian workers and their families. Earlier CSA survey items assisted in a need for rapid response clinical assessment originating from clinical observations, literature with a factor analysis resulting in 20 subscales and 5 qualitative content domains (Organizational, Cultural, Relational, Behavioral, and Personal). However, the assessment required more robust scale and factor analysis development to assure replicability. The present study analyzed 1,133 respondents working in 130 host countries. After various factor analytical iterations, a final CSA psychometric scale of 5 factors and 15 subscales (and a final 3 factor solution) emerged that compares with other known expatriate employee and spousal adjustment scales (Bhaskar-Shrinivas, Harrison, Shaffer, & Luk, 2005; Black, Mendenhall, & Oddou, 1991; Brown,...

Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to examine relationships between cross-cultural adjustment and stress of expatriate employees with families in a multinational corporation and identify common stressors reported during international transitions.Design/methodology/approach– This study utilized both quantitative and qualitative methods through an online survey based tool. The CernySmith Assessment captured the statistical measures of objective adjustment scales along with written in, subjective stressor responses from a sample of expatriates.Findings– Overall subjective stress level was negatively correlated with all five objective adjustment domains (organizational, cultural, relational, behavioral, and personal). Seven stressor categories (cultural, occupational, relational, historical, crisis, spiritual, physical) demonstrated statistically significant negative relationships with overall adjustment. Regression analysis indicated expatriate adjustment was predicted by spiritual,...

The Problem Life for faculty members is becoming more complex and stressful due to the rate of change and the ever-increasing demands being placed on them: publish in top journals, apply for funding, teach and support more students, integrate new technology into classes, serve on committees, and contribute to your discipline and professional association. Current systems, policies, and practices within higher education often fail to recognize the unique contributions of faculty members, especially those who might not reflect the traditional perspectives that have been put in place for decades. Rather, there remains a strongly guarded tradition of what is valued and rewarded within higher education. Hence, higher education needs to transform its organizational culture, valuing individual contributions, meeting workforce demands, and ensuring the health of the education system and society. The Solution The field of human resource development (HRD) with its interdisciplinary roots and e...
