Marcello Venusti painted two lost works for the church of S. Maria della Pace in Rome. An original document from the Archive of the Virtuosi al Pantheon and Giorgio Vasari in his Lifes testify that one painting was intended for friar Desiderio di Adiutorio and represented Christ among the Doctors. The payment of this painting was recently confused with that of the Annunciation painted by Venusti for Cardinal Federico Cesi in the Church of the Pace after the Michelangelo's drawing now in New York, Pierpont Morgan Library.

The restoration of the plaster bust of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome is an opportunity to return to the portraits of Michelangelo executed by Daniele da Volterra. Daniele has in fact painted the portrait of Michelangelo several times: particularly in the fresco of the church of the SS. Trinità dei Monti, in the panel painting of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, in the bronzes of the Accademia Museum in Florence, etc. The plaster cast of San Luca was executed by Pier Leone Ghezzi after the bronze formerly in the Fabbrica di San Pietro, now in the Museum of Rimini. The author of this bronze is not Daniele, but one of his followers and partner, perhaps Jacopo del Duca.

The paper is based on the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of Marcello Venusti, a Lombard artist who became a Roman painter. It focus the complex web of documented connections that link Venusti with Michelangelo Buonarroti and Sebastiano del Piombo, and the precise role he played in the diffusion of their aesthetic and spiritual ideas. Venusti was not simply a copyist, but a master of colour and a qualified interpreter of Michelangelo and Sebastiano. He became a pillar of the Reform of Art in the Cinquecento, thanks to his role in the diffusion of the ideas of Michelangelo and Victoria Colonna.

Michelangelo offered two little paintings to his beloved assistant Francesco Amadori, called Urbino: the Annunciation and the Crucifixion. After the Amadori's death (3 December 1556) the paintings passed to the collection of the Duke of Urbino. In the correspondence with Michelangelo, Cornelia Colonelli, widow of Francesco Amadori, asked him if Marcello Venusti could make a copy of both paintings, because the original paintings were offered by the Duke of Urbino. From the Della Rovere collection they passed to Lucrezia d'Este. When she died, in 1598 she left her collection to the Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini and the paintings passed from Ferrara to Rome. From the Aldobrandini they moved into the Borghese collection until their dispersion approx. 1790-1800. In 1802 the Crucifixion was bought by Luciano Bonaparte, who later sold it to Maria Luisa of Borbone. The Crucifixion appears was mentioned yet in the collection of her son, Carlo Ludovico of Borbone-Lucca. In 1841 he tried to sell the painting in London, probably without success. On the back of the painting there are the number of the Borghese inventory of 1693 and the letters of Carlo Ludovico Borbone. The painting, today in a private collection, was exhibited in "D'après Michelangelo", Milan, Castello Sforzesco, 30 September 2015 - 10 January 2016.
