This chapter examines (Im)politeness in workplace interaction. After outlining our theoretical approach which involves critical realism and interactional sociolinguistics, we review previous research in this area and identify a range of methods of collecting relevant data. The chapter then illustrates the analysis of (Im)politeness in workplace discourse by focusing on transitions at different levels, first involving people moving from country to country (e.g. expatriates), then from institution to institution (e.g. apprentices and newcomers moving into their first job after school) and finally from company to company (e.g. people who change jobs or employers). The analyses demonstrate that (Im)politeness norms comprise one important component of the learning required to integrate into a new workplace context.

ABSTRACTYou know, like the tag question and the parenthetical I think, has been regarded as a linguistic hedging device, and consequently as a “women's language” form. This paper describes a range of forms and functions expressed by you know, as well as its use by women and men in a corpus of spontaneous speech. While there is no difference in this corpus in the total number of occurrences of you know produced by women and men, there are interesting contrasts in the most frequent functions expressed by you know in female and male usage. Finally, the possibility that negative stereotypes may distort perceptions of women's usage is briefly discussed. (Sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, contextual styles, women's and men's speech)

This article explores the contributions that five different approaches to discourse analysis can make to interpreting and understanding the same piece of data. Conversation analysis, interactional sociolinguistics, politeness theory, critical discourse analysis, and discursive psychology are the approaches chosen for comparison. The data is a nine-minute audio recording of a spontaneous workplace interaction. The analyses are compared, and the theoretical and methodological implications of the different approaches are discussed.

This course will provide an overview of research on spoken workplace discourse. Topics which will be covered include transactional and relational talk at work, including features of workplace meetings and the importance of small talk and humour in contributing to good workplace relationships. The course will also consider a range of different leadership styles, and will examine challenging areas such as miscommunication and problematic talk at work. The differences between normatively masculine and feminine styles of leadership will be examined and the contribution of ethnicity to patterns of communication in the workplace will be discussed. The course will consider a range of methods of collecting workplace data and will provide a brief introduction to a variety of approaches to the analysis of workplace discourse. These will include interactional sociolinguistics, conversation analysis, critical discourse analysis, social constructionism, as well as the concept of a community of practice. Applications of the research in a teaching and learning context will also be discussed drawing on materials from the Communication Skills course for Skilled Migrants taught at Victoria University in Wellington.

This article seeks to bring to the fore the processes by which leaders co-create leadership through collective talk within the workplace. Co-leadership has recently been recognized as an important aspect of leadership practice, especially at the top of organizations, yet it remains under-theorized and empirically under-explored. Guided by the desire to integrate concepts that have emerged from leadership psychology with discursive leadership approaches, this exploratory empirical study applies a specific form of discourse analysis, interactional sociolinguistics, to three different organizational contexts. Because interactional sociolinguistics focuses on the ways in which relationships are seen to be negotiated and maintained through talk, it is well placed to analyse leadership, a relational process involving leaders and followers that is predicated on asymmetrical power relations. The analysis demonstrates how successful co-leaders cooperate, dynamically shifting roles and integrating their leadership performance to encompass task-related and maintenance-related functions of leadership.

Workplace interaction presents different sociopragmatic challenges for different groups. Expectations relating to the construction of a convincing professional identity differ radically in different socio-cultural contexts. Those who aspire to senior positions are faced with accomplishing the construction of an appropriately authoritative identity within a culturally constraining environment. For all New Zealanders this entails taking account of an aggressively egalitarian ethos. For Maori, the challenge involves enacting leadership in culturally appropriate ways within a wider institutional context with different cultural values and interactional norms. For skilled migrants attempting to find appropriate employment, the challenge involves constructing a convincing professional identity in an unfamiliar cultural context, while also attending to the relational expectations of their new colleagues in the organisations in which they are working. This paper draws on the extensive resear...

In many societies the relative social status of different social and cultural groups results in hegemonic relationships or an ‘order’ which manifests itself as sets of taken-for-granted societal norms or ideologies which influence behavior, including linguistic behavior. I label this concept theculture order, and propose it as a potential sociolinguistic universal. Drawing on the research of the Language in the Workplace Project (LWP) team, I provide evidence of some of the complex components of the New Zealand culture order. Using a social realist theoretical framework, and an interactional sociolinguistics approach, I identify a number of areas of contrast in the discourses instantiating the Māori and Pākehā culture orders (e.g. meeting norms, ways of criticising others), as well as discourse norms apparently shared by both groups (e.g. the Modesty Maxim; see Leech 2014). The complexities of these similarities and differences are discussed as well as their implications for hegemon...

The enactment of biculturalism in Aotearoa New Zealand has varied greatly over the time since colonial settlement, and it is still a debated and evolving concept. In this article we examine practices adopted by one Māori Chief Executive Officer in two different workplaces at two different points in time to illustrate this process in action. Our analysis examines the way he opens meetings of his senior management teams, demonstrating the way he adopts flexible and context-sensitive approaches, taking account of exactly where each organisation and each individual, whatever their ethnicity and varied cultural experience, is located along the pathway to biculturalism. His introduction of Māori tikanga (ways of doing things) and practices into both workplaces sends the message that Māori culture and language are valued, while the differences between the two organisations, including a greater focus on bilingualism as part of biculturalism more recently, reflects shifting attitudes in wide...
