Along with the researches of Marco Morin and Claude Blair about the German origins of the wheellock system dating back to the first years of the 16th century, this paper wants to consider the number of 16th century’s wheellock guns ascribable with full certainty to Italian craftsmen. The most ancient Italian wheellock guns preserved in the national and international museums date back to 1570-80, and generally carry Nordic import locks, the so-called fiamminghe (Flemish), thus demonstrating the existence of a production, although still depending on imported parts, in the Italian territory. From the beginning of the 16th century the city and the district of Brescia were highly reputable in terms of production of firearms, in particular of the famous barrels produced in Val Trompia. Harquebuses and muskets commissions’ requests were sent to Brescia from all over Italy and Europe. Despite the emphasis of the sources on the Brescia production of military arms, the civil one is often left aside.
Is it right to assert there was also a civil arms’ production at least in part comparable to that of the 17 th century? The scenario emerging from the documents is problematic and leads to many questions: how and when did a production of wheellock mechanisms develop in Italy? Can the few 16 th -century Italian wheellock firearms be ascribable to the Brescia production? If so, is it possible to trace back the origin of Brescia’s production of wheellock mechanisms, which was well established in the 17th century, to the last decades of the 16th century? This paper will try to answer these questions, exploiting the study of objects and, in particular, of the source not yet published.

As early as the mid-17th century, Brescia had become a main player in the field of both civil and military firearms manufacturing. At the same time, however, in the city, crime was increasingly spreading. Members of the most distinguished Brescian noble families – such as Martinengo, Gambara, Avogadro - employed henchmen, in Italian "bravi", to illegally enforce their rule and advance their interests inside the city and the surrounding territories. To tackle the violent outbreaks and assassinations, between 1603 and 1648 Venetian authorities published several laws against firearm carrying, particularly banning the arquebus, which was most frequently used for these crimes. As a result, the folding gun was developed. This firearm was easily concealable under the big cloaks in vogue during that time, the ferraioli. The author examines the origins and popularization of these weapons in early 17th century Brescia.

This paper focuses on a falchion in the Luigi Marzoli Museum, Brescia (inv. G15). Its entire blade is covered with a distinctive design comprising lines of short and deep parallel semi-circular niches. This unusual detail is found on other arms in international museum collections, two of which bear the signature "Faustino Gelpho bresciano". This paper will consider connections between this idiosyncratic style and the unknown craftsman, Faustino Ghelfo. It will also attempt to reconstruct a portrait of master Ghelfo based on a possible personal modus operandi.

The passage commented on this article is taken from a chronicle written in the last years of the fifteenth century by the notary Iacopo Malga from Brescia. This interesting passage demonstrates the bellicosity of the inhabitants of Brescia’s valleys, in particular that of Val del Garza and Val Trompia. In the last years of the twelfth century the hermit Costanzo founded a church and a monastery on the mountain (Conche mountain) that separates these two valleys. He was later sanctified after h..

This article is focused on an arms inventory of Gambara, a noble family of Brescia. The inventory was drawn between 1615 and 1618.
In the first part of the article, this inventory will be pubblished fully. In the second it will be commented. Various topics will be covered: from "lazzarine" barrels to Faustino Ghelfo, a forgotten Brescian swordsmith.

Two Venetian types of swords coming from the “Luigi Marzoli” Arms Museum in Brescia were characterized in this study, to understand their manufacturing process and to gather information about their provenance. Both the blades and the hilts components are analyzed using a multi-methodological approach, to describe possible differences in the metallurgical features that involved classical metallographic and spectroscopic techniques. Microstructural results indicate a complex process for the manufacturing of the blades, by hot-forging, confirmed by a sequence of different microstructures even on the same sample. Furthermore, an interesting and unusual manufacturing technique is used on one of the pommels, which consists of two hemispheres connected by copper joints. Hypothesis about the ironmaking and the provenience of raw materials are obtained by the features and composition of the inclusions. It is suggested that there is the use of both a direct and an indirect process on the swor...

Scattered in different public and private collections, a bunch of schiavonas presents some inscriptions in Croatian Cyrillic. This paper focuses on the inscription of four swords in Marzoli’s collection (G118-2437, G143-3070, G114-2471 and G135-699). With the help of two experts in the field, Mateo Žagar and Marko Rimac, the author try to reconstruct the background in which the presumed Croat armourer Grgur operated. The picture that emerges tells of an assembler of swords that lived and worked in the first half of the eighteenth century, probably in Dalmazia or in the region of Ragusa.
