This presentation to an international conference in Armenia (July 2022) analyzes the threat to material (architectural) Armenian cultural heritage in the historic area of Artsakh. These are mainly sacral buildings. The Azerbaijani attempt to unilaterally claim the history of the disputed border region by declaring itself the sole heir of the late antique South Caucasian-Albanian state of Albania was identified as a special feature. Another peculiarity is the difficulty of effectively and sustainably implementing the numerous international treaties, decisions and statements on the protection of material cultural heritage.

The historical settlement area of the Armenians, the Armenian Highland, as well as the South Caucasus have been among the most disputed and contested areas in the world since ancient times. This has had far-reaching negative consequences for the people living in this region: Difficulties in establishing a central state or small statehood, strong dependence on competing regional hegemonic powers, foreign domination, insecurity for life and limb resulting in migration or mass exodus and even genocide. Genocide is one of those crimes caused by wars and civil wars, but also by periods of transformation, by one-party regimes, and by the suspension of parliamentary rule. In the 20th century, serial genocides occurred, not coincidentally, during the two world wars. These wars provided the smokescreen behind which states could realize an intention of extermination usually conceived before the war began. However, the actual military starting point for the Ottoman genocide of three million indigenous Christians was not the First World War, but the Balkan wars of 1912 and 1913, which became a test run for deportations in the Ottoman province of Edirne (Adrianoupolis), which were carried out as death marches. The Young Turk rulers learned from this occasion that people expelled across state borders returned, while a high proportion of those deported to the interior perished.

The collection of the Center for Information and Documentation on Armenia embraces the period between 1877 and 1939, when not only a new wave of Armenian
refugees was set in motion by the annexation of Alexandretta, but also the genocide survivors in Syria and Lebanon still suffered from the unmitigated material
consequences of the Genocide. Over two hundred of the collection's documents relate directly to the massacres of 1894 and the Genocide of World War I, while over a hundred more deal with the activity of German and other relief organizations. From this collection we published in 1992 118 documents, some of them for the first time, arranged in thematic-chronological order.

This literary analysis examines the representation of the Ottoman genocide against Armenians and Greeks in contemporary German prose using four examples of family narratives and travel texts, respectively. Two of the authors analyzed – Katerina Poladyan and Laura Cwiertnia – represent fictional prose, while Mirko Heinemann and Michael Asderis represent factual prose. Written three to four generations after the Ottoman genocide, all four authors ask themselves what the events of that time mean for the descendants of survivors: a burden or a legacy obligatory to preserve or

Based on observations and testimonies of contemporary eyewitnesses, this article analyzes the significance of the seizure and burning of the Ionian capital and port city of Smyrna (Tr.: Izmir) in September 1922 by Turkish nationalist (Kemalist) forces. The event marked not only a humanitarian catastrophe of unprecedented proportions, but also the end of a decade-long genocide against the indigenous Christians of the Ottoman Empire. This genocide typically occurred during a period of transition from a feudal multi-ethnic state to a Turkish nationstate. At the beginning and end of the associated state crimes were the Ottoman provinces of Aydın/Smyrna as well as Edirne (Greek: Adrianoupolis), whose Greek Orthodox population had already been attacked, intimidated, expelled or deported and massacred during and after the Balkan wars.
Keywords: Ottoman Empire, Turkey, Smyrna, Genocide, Nation state, Ottoman Greeks, Ottoman Christians.

Because of his function as head of the German military mission in the Ottoman Empire during World War I, Otto Liman von Sanders is still considered by many to be a war criminal or even a genocide perpetrator. In her biographical account, the Armenian scholar and publicist Muriel Mirak-Weissbach arrives at a more differentiated statement. My epilogue takes up the contemporary, mainly Greek accusations again, but supports the tendency of the author Mirak-Weissbach.

In an unusually short time by today’s standards, after two and a half months, the assassin was put on trial on 2 and 3 June of the same year at the jury court of Berlin District Court

Obviously, the German or Prussian judiciary wanted to get rid of the accused and with him the subject of German-Turkish relations as quickly as possible. Tehlirian was acquitted on 3 June 1920, on the grounds of incapacity of guilt and was immediately deported from Germany. This article explains the background, context and lasting effects of his crime.

Based on primary, predominantly German sources and secondary literature, I reconstruct in this contribution the policy of the C.U.P and Kemalist regimes as a late reaction to the phenomenon of numerous destitute orphans as a result of massive deportation and massacres against Christian populaces during the last decade of Ottoman rule. This includes a classification of the various aspects of such policy: 1) Obstruction and suppression of existing Christian charitable activity: Foreign and domestic orphanages and related missionary institutions, including Armenian and Greek Orthodox orphanages, were obstructed by the Young Turkish authorities during and after WW1 and have been suppressed since 1917, even in the case of most German missionary institutions. Since 1919, the Kemalist nationalist regime continued this obstructive policy in its sphere of power. 2) Establishment of state (Muslim) orphanages: State (Muslim) orphanages existed or were founded in numerous Ottoman cities during WW1, for example, in Adapazarı, Aleppo, Ayntoura (Lebanon), Balıkesir, Bandırma, Constantinople-Skutari, Islahiye, Izmit, Konya, Malatya, Meskene, Kayseri, Samsun, Urfa etc. As a result of general neglect and starvation, the morbidity rate in these orphanages was between 50 and 90 percent. 3) The most common form of child abduction and forcible child transfer was practiced by the Muslim population, often tolerated by the state or even encouraged and organized by the local authorities which, among others, encouraged Muslim men to 'marry' Christian girls and women in order to become 'legal' owners or heirs of the 'brides'' possessions. Child transfer was partly committed with the 'consent' of the desperate relatives of the child.

The present issue of the Working Papers (No 3, 2009) published by the Department of Sociology of the Institute for Eastern European Studies at the Freie Universität Berlin contains preliminary results of the international research project Comparing Out-Migration from Armenia and Georgia (ArGeMi), funded by Volkswagen-Stiftung for the 2008-2010
period.
Two introductory chapters provide an overview on the topic of international migration and on the aims of the research project. Three reports explore causes, processes and effects
of out-migration from Armenia and Georgia to Moscow which is the most relevant destination of migrants from the South Caucasus. The issue also contains a comprehensive bibliography on out-migration from Armenia and Georgia and
immigration to Russia.
The guiding idea of the descriptions and explanations is the necessity to analyze international migration from the perspective of both the countries of origin and the countries of immigration. This balanced approach is further elaborated by taking into account the variety of macro-, meso-, and micro-social determinants of international migration and its consequences. This two-tired explanatory model offers fresh
insights into the interplay of economic, political and cultural factors and effects of migration. In addition, it makes it possible to systematically study acting individuals together with economic organizations, political institutions and other
collective actors involved in the international migration.

During the last decade of Ottoman rule in 1912-1922, under two nationalist regimes - the so-called Young Turks (Ittihat ve Terakki Cemiyeti), since 1919 the Kemalists - at least three million indigenous Christians (Greek Orthodox, Armenians and Syrians of different denominations) were murdered by forced labor, massacres and death marches.
In my pptx-supported lecture (Athens, Dec 1, 2018) I explain the demographic peculiarities of the Ottoman Empire and the historical-political background in the period between the Balkan Wars of 1912/3 and the capture of Smyrna (Sept. 1922) before I trace the course of the genocide of the Greek Orthodox population and ask about the peculiarities in comparison with the fate of the Armenians. My thesis is that these specifics consisted above all in the regionalization as well as in the long duration of this genocide, which was committed before, during and after the First World War.
It will also be necessary to ask about the role of protective powers for Ottoman Christians: Unlike the Ottoman Armenians, of whom one and a half million were destroyed in just 19 months, the Greek Orthodox Christians in the Ottoman Empire had, at least temporarily, a protective state in Greece. Thus the initial neutrality of Greece in the WW1 initially caused a deceleration of the annihilation policy.
Finally, the applicability of the term genocide as defined by international law to events in the late Ottoman Empire must be justified.

The crimes that form the topic of my presentation were committed on the ethnically highly diversified peninsula between the Gulfs of Mudanya and Izmit.
The period under scrutiny saw the successive collapse of the Ottoman Empire and its civic administration, the emergence of a rivaling nationalist state under Mustafa Kemal and the guerilla fight of Kemalist irregulars against the Hellenic occupational forces and the indigenous Christian population, including returning WW1 deportees. The years 1920 and 1921 also saw the failure of the Allies to establish an impartial judiciary, to protect Ottoman Christians from further massacres, including large-scale sexual violence, and to prevent their economic destruction. As side effect of the traumatizing and at the same time brutalizing events the impoverished and homeless Yalova Christians in a few cases retaliated on their tormentors or on the Muslim population in general. The only resort that the Allies knew was to evacuate Christian survivors to Thrace and the Greek islands in 1922 (21,000 ethnic Greeks, 9,000 Armenians).
My account and analyze derives from the report of the Inter-Allied Yalova Commission (1921), the findings of the Armenian-Greek Section at the Inter-Allied High Commission in Constantinople and the testimonies, gathered in situ by the Greek war correspondent Konstantinos Faltaits. The conclusion is that the local ‘atrocities’, which resulted in the murder of more than 15,000 Greeks and the arson of 37 Greek villages, form an episode in the genocidal destruction of more than one million Romiosyni (Rumlar) during the last decade of Ottoman rule.

In my contribution, I introduce four authors of different generations and languages, but all of Greek origin: Elias Venezis, Dido Sotiriou, Jeffrey Eugenides and Aris Fioretos. Both the works of expelled authors from Asia Minor and of their transnational, postmodern descendants are remarkably free of revanchist clichés or the stereotypical ‘othering’ of Turks or Muslims. While Venezis points to the irritating ‘genocidal corruption’ and dehumanization within the victim group, Sotiriou puts the political responsibility for the ‘Catastrophe’ on Germany and the Entente, depicting Asia Minor as the homeland of Greeks and Turks. Eugenides chooses intersexuality as a metaphor of modernity and hybridity of (Greek and other) immigrant communities, whereas Fioretos is interested in flowing, flexible identities and the intersection of past and present that expresses itself in a non-linear narrative, where everybody and everything is related to others.

Written three to four generations after the Ottoman genocide, all four authors ask themselves what the events of that time mean for the descendants of survivors: a burden or a legacy obligatory to preserve or remember? At the same time, genre hybridity as a characteristic of post-genocidal or post-migrant German prose is analyzed.
