4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 742 ratings

From the New York Times-bestselling author of Quitter and Start comes the definitive guide to getting your dream job.

When you don't like your job, Sunday isn't really a weekend day. It's just pre-Monday. But what if you could call a Do Over and actually look forward to Monday?

Starting on the first day you got paid to scoop ice cream or restock shelves, you’ve had the chance to develop the four elements all great careers have in common: relationships, skills, character, and hustle. You already have each of those, to one degree or another.

Now it’s time to amplify them and apply them in a new way, so you can call a Do Over on your career, at any age. You’ll need a Do Over because you’ll eventually face at least one of these major transitions:

   •  You’ll hit a Career Ceiling and get stuck, requiring sharp skills to free yourself.
   •  You’ll experience a Career Bump and unexpectedly lose your job, requiring strong relationships to survive.
   •  You’ll make a Career Jump to a new role, requiring solid character to push through uncertainty and chaos.
   •  You’ll get a surprise Career Opportunity, requiring dedicated hustle to take advantage of it.

Jon Acuff’s unique approach will give you the resources to reinvent your work, get unstuck, and get the job you’ve always wanted!

Review

“You have the power to give yourself a fresh start. Jon Acuff shows you how.”
SOPHIA AMORUSO, author of #GIRLBOSS

“As Abraham Lincoln once said, being forced into work you don’t love is like paying to upgrade your cell phone to the latest model: no one should have to do that! Fortunately, you don’t need to do at least one of these things anymore. Take it from me and from Honest Abe: Jon’s book can get you unstuck."
CHRIS GUILLEBEAU, author of The Happiness of Pursuit and The $100 Startup

Do Over is an energetic, user-friendly guide to navigating the jumps, bumps, and ceilings that we all face in our careers.”
ADAM GRANT, author of Give and Take

Do Over is funny, insightful, and well-written. Three reasons I resent Jon Acuff.”
JIM GAFFIGAN, comedian and author of Food: A Love Story

“Honest, funny, helpful, fresh: there’s a long list of words to describe the wisdom you’ll find in
Do Over. I dare you to read the first few pages of this book. If you’re like me, you won’t be able to stop. I have ordered a copy for every member of my team.”
MICHAEL HYATT, author of Platform

“Big dreams often start with big books.
Do Over is one of them. The impact this book is going to have on the careers and lives of people across the world is going to be really fun to watch!”
ANDY ANDREWS, author of The Noticer and The Traveler’s Gift

“Jon Acuff serves up heaping portions of sage advice with a healthy side of selfdeprecating humor. As an entrepreneur and business owner, I found myself nodding, laughing, and getting my toes stepped all over in a good way throughout these pages.”

“This is the best career book ever written. I’m not even sure what book comes in second. This is practical, human, touching, urgent, vulnerable, universal, actionable truth, all in a well-written, handy package. Go!”

When Life Needs a "Do Over", go see Jon! #DoOverBook
Jon Acuff's "Do Over" is a book that I would recommend to anyone who find themselves at any crossroads of purpose in their life. Although written from a professional or vocational angle, this book's concepts can easily be applied to areas in our personal lives that might need a "reboot." Acuff offers some very practical advice and realistic steps to achieve them. Couched in his own personal story, the author takes the time to "unpack" some of his own personal motivations and needs that will quickly be identifiable with many readers. This is a book that can breathe life into your Monday, Tuesday, and even Wednesday!

I don't usually read either business or self help books. Generally I find that the author has enough good ideas for an article, stretched into a book. This is not one of those cases. I became a fan of Jon Acuff from his blogs, and though he has written 5 of them, this is the first I have read. It is chock full of great ideas, humor, helpful exercises and creative perspectives on managing one's "Career Savings Account". I highly recommend this for people interested in being more intentional in managing their career satisfaction. It clicked for me as one established in my career and I think it would have connected for me as a fresh college graduate entering the workplace. I wish I had read it then as there are some practices that might have helped me avoid some challenges, and have navigated them with more grace.

"Do Over" is something most of us recall from our youth. It is used when we make a mistake, and want to immediately try again. This is a skill many lose with time, and the author does a wonderful job reminding us how we can recapture that experience. Not only does he encourage us in our ability to "do Over", but offers great advice on how to plan for it, how to know it is time to consider one, and how to respond to one, even if it is not of our choice.

Easy to read, and humorous. I highly recommend.

Stuck in your job? Find yourself without work or a career? #DoOverBook is an insightful, funny, and entertaining book that will help you learn where you are in your career, show you ways to improve your situation, and come out better on the other side. The author is familiar with the cycle of changing jobs and careers and has authored two other career books: "Quitter: Closing the Gap Between Your Day Job & Your Dream Job" and "Start: Punch Fear in the Face, Escape Average and Do Work that Matters".

Following the guidelines and suggestions (such as building your Career Savings Account, Investing in Relationships, and Building and Realizing your skill sets), you will learn how to improve yourself. Add some genuine "hustle" to the mix, and you will be able to relaunch your career. Jon's includes the theme of 'your dream job' found in his other two books in #DoOverBook.

The process in the #DoOverBook isn't an overnight solution. The information included in the book will take time to implement. The relationships will take time to build or rekindle. Think back to your time as a kid and wanting to call a "do over" about something you just did. The #DoOverBook will help you do just that, but in an adult-like fashion.

Grab this book, your favorite chips, and a bowl of queso. Enjoy them all!

What I enjoy about reading Jon Acuff books is the humor, wit, wisdom, down-to-earthiness, and practicality. Acuff is not all unicorns and rainbows. He shares bits and pieces of his story that allow the reader to connect with the many truths he shares about career do overs! It makes the writing believable, highly relatable and doable. It involves me in the process of my own do over while following along on Acuff's journey to a do over. I also love that the idea of the book isn't just limited to careers. Acuff helps readers see how that can have a do over at any point of life beyond just work. I love that he highlights the need for not going the journey alone. Do overs don't work without a community behind you. Thanks Jon Acuff for once again making me think and stretch my dreams. Can't wait for your next writing endeavor!

I loved everything about this book. The best part is that I happened upon it almost by accident without realizing how fabulous the timing would turn out to be.

A colleague introduced me to Jon's blog and I enjoyed his writing style so much I signed up for the newsletter. One of few that I enjoy reading. When I read the newsletter about this book I pre-ordered it. I was feeling stuck in my job - I loved the work but not the company. I was day dreaming about my ideal job - one where I loved not only the work, but the company I work for. I wasn't ready to jump, they paid me well and I worked from home, so I was looking for motivation. The book was delivered the week before a scheduled vacation, so I decided to wait until after vacation to start reading it.

The day I got back from vacation I was laid off. Best blindside ever. I felt an enormous sense of relief, followed by terror and lots of self pity. Then back to relief. I spent the rest of the week taking calls from fabulous co-workers who were as shocked as I was and reconnecting with friends and colleagues from previous jobs. I also started reading this book. Every page helped to reinforce the fact that everything happens for a reason and that I am now on an exciting journey. I can't wait to see where this leads me, but I'm sure that where ever it is I have what I need to make it better than the last.

Jon Acuff is a phenomenal thinker and communicator, which is why I bought this book. I listened to a copy from the library but there were so many things worth remembering I needed a copy for myself to refer to. Unfortunately, I thought I was getting a new
book but there were some highlights and a few comments. Nothing egregious, but I was disappointed.
