The aim of the paper is to present the history of Bulgarian as a second language classes for foreign students at South-West University “Neofit Rilski”, which is one of the biggest Bulgarian universities. The period under consideration includes twenty-one years from 2000 to 2021. The main groups of foreign students who learn Bulgarian at the university are presented, along with the organization of learning organization, based on the goals set, the workbooks, which are used, as well as the difficulties and the challenges, which teachers and students face during the educational process. Some ideas, which we hope could be implemented into practice in the near future, are also proposed.

The grammatical category of the person in bg-mamma forum communicationThe main purpose of the paper is to present some grammatical features of computer-mediated communication (CMC), in particular the verb category of the person. The specifics of grammar use in CMC texts are not preferred by researchers as they are more difficult to investigate. The grammatical system is more stable and conservative and the differences in grammar use are less discernable. A lot of investigators claim that CMC occupies the middle position between speech and writing. Hewing and Coffin (2004) consider that in speech the first and the second person use is preferred; in writing the third person has more frequent use. This research thus aims to investigate the use of personal forms of verbs in some discussions in the largest Bulgarian forum platform – bg‑mamma. The results show that in the corpus the third person appears more often than others. The second person has lowest use. Gramatyczna kategoria osoby ...

The aim of the paper is to introduce the author's observations on the influence that English has on the Bulgarian forum "Netspeak" for women living in the USA. The collected data for the investigation are excerpted from a Bulgarian forum platform. The emphasis is on code-switching, one of the main topics in sociolinguistics; as well as on the interlanguage, which is a result of the penetration of some elements from English into the first language of communicators. The orthography may also be influenced as in Bulgaria the Cyrillic alphabet is used. The informal situation is a prerequisite for the mixed style use, especially in vocabulary. Different topics have been observed and discussed by users in the forum: the choice of baby accessories; baggage loss in airports; child diseases, child physical and mental development, etc. The investigated forum discussion includes 52,020 lexical items. Excerpted English words are few - only 1.5%. Most of them are nouns because of th...

The paper is an investigation of nostalgia in its diverse manifestations in social media, mainly Facebook, during COVID-19 crisis in Bulgaria and is based on pre-observation which shows that communication through social media at that period was largely nostalgic. The study considers nostalgia as a strategy for dealing with the 2020 state of emergency during which the lack of physical contact and social experiences can create preconditions for anxiety, depression and fear leading to traumatic consequences. The research is based on empirical material actively collected using the method of the included observation in the period from the 15th of March 2020, when the state of emergency in connection with COVID-19 was declared in Bulgaria, until the 30th of June 2020. The purpose of the paper is to present the nostalgic modes in Facebook and to reveal the reasons for their success as communicative and social messages. The aim of the paper is to present the author's observations on the publication process of the Eastern European journals on Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences indexed in international databases. As this kind of publication is a relatively new practice in this part of Europe and a lot of researchers are not well prepared for how long-lasting and timeconsuming the publication process of the Scopus and Web of Science journals may be, the common steps are presented, starting with the specifics of the e-platforms used by most of the publishers. The importance of meeting the technical requirements of the particular journal is also discussed as well as the place and the role of the peer-review process in the whole procedure. The most frequent problems and challenges that editors and journals face when this step has to be completed are reported and the reasons for the current situation are presented. As peer reviewing is a crucial part of the publication process, it is analyzed in detail. Special attention is paid to the importance of the final editing and proofreading of the manuscript. Apart from all these phases of the publishing process in the prestigious journals, some other questions concerning the use of specific languages, the accessibility of the published work, and the evaluation of the academic achievements are discussed. The paper also addresses the importance of free access to resources and of the freedom to disseminate intellectual work.

Every year in Bulgaria there are publicly reported dozens of deaths of women, killed by their partners. It is a problem, broadly discussed in media. At the same time, there is a massive movement in the country against the ratification of the so called Istanbul Convention, a treaty of the Council of Europe against violence against women and domestic violence, (even from the leadership of the self-proclaimed leftist former Communist party). The voices proclaiming the need to preserve the so-called traditional values are also very popular. In this situation, it seems interesting with the help of the methods of Critical discouse analysis (CDA) to investigate the most common linguistic strategies and narratives used by people who downplay or defend violence against women. That is why two case studies are presented in this particular paper – the first one is a thread of posts on Twitter concerning the murder of a woman, who has been found dead at the International day against violence against women (25th November); and the second one is a forum thread of 100 posts that may be found after a piece of news about reported violence against a popular Bulgarian actress, published in the pro-European liberal online media Dnevnik on 4th December 2022.

At the outburst of the COVID-19 pandemic and all throughout its continuation in 2020 and 2021, the metaphor of ‘war' has been one of the most pervasive and recurrent globally. As an international, cross-cultural group of scholars and practitioners, we will analyze critically the communicative strategies enacted and the political agenda that they have meant to serve in Italy, Bulgaria, and Ukraine discussing both the cultural differences and the cross-cultural similarities of such a discourse that has been shaping the perception of our factual reality during the pandemic. Expressions like ‘We are at war', ‘Our heroes are fighting at the forefront', ‘We will win this war' and the like contributed to create symbolical cross-cultural responses that, by playing on emotions such as fear, uncertainty and, in some cases, national pride, contributed to the creation of a new state of reality, that of the “new normality”, calling for specific actions and behaviors. However, the war metaphor assumed different hues according to the country in which it was disseminated, up to the actual appointment of generals as governmental spoke-persons or organizers of the vaccine logistics, often combined with the construction and the mediatization of the archetypical hero fighting against the virus/enemy. To analyze how, all throughout 2020 and 2021, the military rhetoric was implemented and disseminated as the dominant discourse, we draw on Media Representations of the Real, on Rhetoric Studies on Manipulation, on Political Discourse, on Critical Discourse Studies, and on Susan Sontag's fundamental essay Illness as Metaphor. We discuss such rhetorical strategies as they originated from a discussion within our collective project in other words, an online dictionary that, besides critically analyzing contextualized keywords that (re)produce different forms of Otherness, offers creative proposals to reverse such narratives, and can be used as a free resource in different social and educational contexts (www.iowdictionary.org).

The aim of the research is to present the meaning and the scope of the phrase “krivorazbrana tolerantnost“ (misunderstood tolerance), which functions as a cliché in everyday communication. The corpus is excerpted from the largest Bulgarian forum platform – bg-mamma and investigates the use of 55 phrases between 2006 and 2017. “Krivorazbrana tolerantnost” is used in public communication to express disagreement with someone’s behaviour/point of view or fear of the changing habits or traditions. Using the cognitive ethnolinguistic approach as well as corpus-based discourse techniques, the paper focuses on the corpus uses of the phrase, its pragmatic influence on the dialogue and the people or the topics which are usually an object of misunderstood tolerance according to bg-mamma forum users. The text introduces the keyword "tolerance" in the Bulgarian and European context. The word comes in Bulgarian at the end of the 19th century and becomes extremely popular in the last decades as it is one of the main values of the pluralist liberal democracy. It is used in political and media discourse and at the same time in everyday communication with sometimes controversial interpretations.

The purpose of the paper is to present the nostalgic modes in Facebook and to reveal the reasons for their success as communicative and social messages. Applying interdisciplinary and multimodal approach the study describes the nostalgic manifestations by classifying thematically the initiatives, communication strategies and topics, oriented towards the past, as well as revealing their meaning for the society. The results show that the main role of nostalgic Facebook modes is to unite people in times of isolation, to raise their spirit and thus save them from the traumas that the COVID-19 crisis can cause. The multimodal analysis of the Facebook images from the empirical data confirms that social media and modern technologies make it possible to create `new products` based on old stories or memories that acquire a new meaning in the specific COVID-19 situation, modelled by the culture and mentality of Bulgarians in isolation.

The aim of this paper is to present the collaborative, analytical and
methodological premises of In Other Words, a research project consisting on the creation and development of an online dictionary of keywords which are shaping the narratives of different forms of Otherness. In Other Words is a critical, collective, creative and intercultural project, structured as an open, collaborative online resource. The project finds its meaning in a context of engaged research: the dissemination of ideas and the use of critical tools beyond the borders of the academia in order to reach the contexts where they are most needed, as for example, those which are marked by overt or
hidden forms of discrimination. A sub-section of the online dictionary In
Other Words is dedicated to the Words of COVID-19. It is particularly of this section that we are discussing in this paper. The section “COVID-19”
of the dictionary analyses critically how, in different countries and different contexts, words have been used and mobilized to create specific narratives of the pandemic.

The aim of the study is to present the use of war metaphors in Bulgarian official discourse in the period of the so-called ‘state of emergency’ because of the SARS–CoV–2 (coronavirus) spread. War-connected metaphors were widespread at the time as even the Secretary-General of the UN used them in his speech. The rhetoric of war was announced by many world political leaders as well. However, the militarisation of the COVID-19 discourse in Bulgaria between March and May is not part of an isolated act, but a purposeful strategy which started with the choice of the members of the National Operational Headquarters and continued with the use of military uniforms during the media briefings, the lexical choice of hyperbolic words and phrases, war metaphors and other rhetoric devices as rhetorical questions, for example. The second stage of the ‘war’ was announced in mid-May when the new strategy of preparation for the silent long-lasting war was presented. The measures have been weakened and people have been prepared for a life with the virus around – the so-called New Normality. The methodology includes Critical Discourse Analysis and Critical Cognitive Analysis. The focus is on the critical examination of certain phenomena in a specific context and in the COVID-19 situation in Bulgaria. The analysis is based on selected publications in the media, which use the metaphor of ‘war’.

As the tolerance itself is a kind of forcing oneself to accept something one does not support or believe in, its meaning and the contextual meaning of the investigated collocation are close.

Abstract: The aim of the research is to present the use of the noun phrases of [N[N] type with the subordinate noun in preposition, which have been very popular in the last decades. The reasons for the spread of these constructions, as well as their contradictory interpretation are discussed. Some investigators consider that they are composita and therefore-a lexical phenomenon, but others (including the author) support the idea that they are noun phrases, i.e. syntactic constructions.

The aim of the paper is to present some humourous texts, which are shared in Facebook, the most widespread social media in Bulgaria at the moment. These funny messages are often re-posted by some users both to make them more popular and to amuse the others. The investigation shows that the humour production in the excerpted cor-pus is mostly based on the polysemy and homonymy. The play between more than one meanings of a word, the ambiguity between some possible interpretations is a source of mirth. As the laugh has the positive effect on people, one may assume that the consequence of such a sharing is similar.

This study is concerned with the Bulgarian cultural concept of толерантност ‘tolerance’, investigated with the methodology of Lublin Ethnolinguistic School of Jerzy Bartmiński. The article presents earlier findings in this area, systemic data from dictionaries, as well as textual data from newspapers (1883–1944).The first use of the adjectiveтолерантенcomes from 1883. The corpus shows that the adjective has a positive meaning and it is often connected with moderation, prolonged suffering, morality, generosity, concession, justice. On the other hand, sometimes tolerance could be expressed in too large an extent, so it is seen as a negative feature. The dictionaries investigated also prefer the attributive meaning of tolerance and the noun толерантност is treated as derived from the adjective. Thus, tolerance is an active attitude rather than just the idea.

The aim of the paper is to present the use of the cliché phrase "ne si pravi eksperimenti" ("don't do experiments") in the forums of the largest Bulgarian Internet platform bg-mamma. 83 uses are excerpted from different parts of the forum. The objectives of the research are to reveal the pragmatic force of the phrase, which is usually a reaction to an utterance mentioned in the previous parts of the forum discussion, as well as to present its thematic scope. It may be defined as a directive according to Searle classification. The negative form of the phrase and the use of the reflexive particle "si" influences its overall meaning. The hypothesis is that "ne si pravi eksperimenti" may be used as a prohibition or as a warning, and it may include different topics which the speaker finds dangerous. The thematic division of the uses is made with the help of #LancsBox. The results confirm the assumption that the phrase is more often used when the speaker wants to prevent someone to do something dangerous. It sounds as strong advice and usually is linked with the user's health or with the health of their child. The phrase is also used when the topic of the conversation is the diet of the users and their child (children). The extreme change of the hairstyle, the risky behaviour, the spontaneous decisions are other themes which provoke some people to react and to express disagreement or anxiety.

The article presents different viewpoints on the concept of communicative competence discussing its scope and meaning as well as the relationship between communicative competence and some close terms such as linguistic competence, language competence, discourse competence, socio-cultural competence and strategic competence. The author argues that communicative competence is a generic term and the other types of competence are its components.
Furthermore, the paper aims to show the importance of developing communicative
competence in the process of Bulgarian language teaching according to the new
Bulgarian normative basis, to reveal the existing definitions of the terms, to present the relationship between the concepts of communicative competence and key competence. The author puts the accent on the existing terminological vagueness and suggests a possible solution to it.
Keywords: Bulgarian language teaching; communicative competence; language
competence; speech competences

Most of them are nouns because of their easy grammatical adaptation. The verb group is not affected so noticeably. The Bulgarian verbal system is very complicated and English verbs used in Bulgarian context are grammatically adapted. There are some exceptions when people use ready-made constructions like idioms and phrasal verbs.

WORD BOUNDARIES AND LANGUAGE PLAY. The aim of the paper is to present the role of incorrect speech segmentation in the process of creation of short ludic forms, such as calambours, epigrams, anecdotes, etc. The research tries to propose a classification of some of these uses, as it reveals common features between them. Most of the examples are excerpted from the social media Facebook, because the language play is very popular in the informal genres of Computer-Mediated Communication. The common feature between all researched examples is the coexistence of the meanings of both homonymic phrases. In fact, this impossibility to avoid ambiguity makes the phrases sound amusing and interesting.

The aim of the paper is to present why the Polish students at Maria Curie-Sklodowska University (UMSC, Lublin) choose to study Bulgarian. The research also includes an investigation of the advantages of learning a " small " Slavic language like Bulgarian and an analysis of the usual problems which the students encounter in the learning process. Thirteen students studying Bulgarian within the framework of the BA programme of Balkan Studies at UMCS participated in the research. They filled out a survey list with questions concerning their motivation and their opinion about the advantages of learning Bulgarian as well as the most difficult topics in Bulgarian grammar and lexicon. The results show that the motivation is usually a pragmatic one. However, most of the students have some emotional motives, too. As Bulgarian is both a Slavic and a Balkan language, it sounds familiar and exotic at the same time. Most of the students think that the lexical level is the easiest linguistic level to be learnt. Moreover, the majority of them report that the most difficult features of Bulgarian are the use of the definite article and the complicated verbal system. The so-called " false friends " are also problematic. Although the Bulgarian language uses the Cyrillic alphabet, most of the students do not think that writing in Bulgarian is difficult.

The aim of the paper is to present the perception of time of the women who have
babies less than 12 months old through observation on some titles of so-called annual
topics in the largest  Bulgarian  forum  platform –bg-mamma.
Using  qualitative  and  quantitative  methods,  the study includes the investigation of time indicators preferred by the forum users in the excerpted 50 threads.  Attention  is  drawn  to  the  presence  of  subjective/objective  time  markers  as  well  as  of linear/cyclic  ones.  Furthermore,  excerpted  words  and  phrases indicating time  have  been  studied having  in  mind  that  time  is  often  metaphorically  represented.  The  investigation also  reveals the  most  important events  in the  mother’s  life as expressed by the  titles of the  topics.
It  seems  to the researcher that in the first year of maternity women perceive the time in a very specific way –they put the baby  growth as a  measure and the objective time  marks only disclose  the changing baby world.  It  is  also  interesting  that  some  traditional  holidays  become  very  important  as  well  as  the rituals connected to them.

The aim of the paper is to present some popular strategies in media, where the effect is achieved through the use of images which are symbols of the past. Nostalgia is an actual and widespread manipulative device which is used not only in Bulgarian media texts. However, we look into its functioning in Bulgarian public sphere. That is why we investigate this phenomenon from the point of view of cognitive and cultural linguistics. The excerpted texts, which contain such symbols and concepts, are from advertisements and political campaign videos from the past five years. The images in the investigated texts are usually indefinite, generalized and vague; they are characterized by some specific distinctive features, indicating their belonging to the past. The reference of time is chronologically unclear, but the past represents some positive features - tradition, quality, taste, warmth. For this reason the products, presented by such a strategy, are more often traditional for our culture – lyutenitsa, banitsa, yoghurt, etc.We analyze in details the linguistic and the visual presentation of the images as well as their functioning as a marketing strategy. The success of such a strategy is a result of the existing nostalgic inclinations in society, which are additionally intensified by emotional and touching images and messages.

The use of the phrase is widespread in public discourse as well as in the everyday communication. The pragmatic function of the collocation is to express disagreement with someone’s behaviour or point of view or fear of the changing habits or traditions. The phrase functions as a cliché and presents anti-liberal attitude. However, it is very important which liberties are not acceptable according to users, who are writing in the platform. The research includes the investigation of discussed topics in which the phrase is used as well of the positions which their authors support.

The aim of the poster is to present an online discussion about the refugee flow since summer 2015. It is held in the biggest Bulgarian forum – bg-mamma, whose active members are women in active age. The fears, the prejudices as well as the stereotypes which presuppose the negative reactions to the migrants are revealed. The special attention is paid to the linguistic means that form the opposition between “us” and “the others”.
