Normal reference range intervals for hematologic and serum biochemical values in the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) have seldom been reported. The few studies that have been conducted either report values on the basis of a small number of animals, report values for all age groups or both sexes combined, or were designed specifically to document the effect of a particular condition on the normal range of hematologic and serum biochemical values. On the basis of data collected from 133 chimpanzees over a 17-year period, empirically based clinical reference ranges were derived to provide a guide for basic diagnostic and clinical care of chimpanzees. For either sex within each of four age groups, there is a table that summarizes serum biochemical and a table that summarizes hematologic values. These values are compared with prior values, and their importance in the care and well being of captive chimpanzee populations is discussed.

The development of social contacts among neighbors is an important concern for many residents. Recent evidence suggests that social interactions occur relatively infrequently in contemporary urban neighborhoods. One intriguing hypothesis is that the frequency of social interaction in single-family neighborhoods is partially associated with the perception of a well-defined space in the front of the house. In order to evaluate this hypothesis, a quasi-experimental design was utilized andface-to-face structured interviews were conducted with residents in 110 single-family households in College Station, Texas. The results pointed to a small set of attributes of space enclosure components ofsinglefamily homes as potential moderators of patterns of social interaction. In particular, territorial markers, as a space enclosure component, predicted social interaction variables, while personal support was associated with almost all space enclosure components. The results of this study suggest ...

The objective of the present study is to explore the impact of acoustical design on children with autism in school classrooms. Empirical research on this topic will provide information on how interior space features and spatial environment characteristics can be used to support the learning and developmental needs of children with autism. Specifically, the connection between repetitive behaviors and ambient noise levels in school classroom environments was observed in four classrooms. The occurrence of repetitive motor movements, repetitive speech, ear covering, hitting, loud vocalizations, blinking, and verbally complaining in relation to decibel levels were analyzed using Noldus Observer XT software. As hypothesized, a correlation between noise levels and frequency of target behaviors was found; that is, as decibel levels increased, several of the observed behaviors occurred with greater frequency. Further empirical testing is necessary to test a causal relationship between increa...

Memory and the Brain was Magda Arnold’s final book, the capstone to an influential career that spanned half a century. Many of the proposals and insights put forth in this work foreshadowed significant theoretical developments in both psychology and the neurosciences. With few exceptions, however, modern researchers, theorists and historians have overlooked this unique contribution. It is a noble employment to rescue from oblivion those who deserve to be remembered. (Pliny, the Younger, ad c. 62113, in a letter to Titinius Capito)

Stimuli depicted, animated, human, walkers that varied,in motion,(gait patterns, varying, shoulder swagger, and hip sway) and in morphology,(waist-to-hip ratio). The potency of morphology,in categorical sex judg- ments was confirmed. Visual scanning,of the walkers, was concentrated,in the waist and hip region of the body (Study 1a).
