La mémoire collective en France de la guerre d’indépendance algérienne n’a pu se réclamer ouvertement de la lignée des mémoires de conflits antérieurs que depuis les années 2000. Le cas d’un monument départemental, celui de la Vienne, érigé en 2007 à Poitiers, est révélateur à plusieurs égards de cette évolution. Outre l’esthétique du monument et ce qu’elle véhicule, ce cas permet de voir quelles ont été les négociations pendant la conception du monument, en amont et en aval de l’inauguration, en raison notamment de la confrontation entre la volonté d’inclusion (universelle) des initiateurs, et le sentiment d’exclusion (politique) des vétérans harkis. L’analyse du discours sur la mémoire de la guerre d'indépendance algérienne, fondée sur ce monument, montre que les formes mémorielles adoptées se situent à la fois dans la continuité de celles d’autres conflits mais contribuent néanmoins à renouveler les représentations des guerres du XXe siècle.
"I have already forgotten… but not everybody has…" The Asynchronous Memories of the Algerian War of Independence in the Years 2000
Collective memory in France concerning the Algerian War of Independence has come into the open and settled in the continuity of the collective memory of the French wars of the 20th century only since the years 2000. The case study of a regional war memorial, erected in 2007 in Poitiers, can shed light from different perspectives on this evolution. Apart from the aesthetics of the monument and its meaning, this case study shows which negotiations were necessary during the conception of the monument, before and after its inauguration, in particular due to the discrepancy between the intention of the initiators to (universally) include all people concerned, and the sentiment of (political) exclusion of the harki veterans. Analyzing the discourse of the memory of the Algerian War of Independence, based on this monument, shows the memorial choices are situated at the same time in the continuity of the memory of other French conflicts, but nevertheless constitutes a new contribution to public representations of 20th century wars.

Der Abschnitt „Aus der Geschichte der Medizin“ beginnt mit dem sehr bewegenden Text der Historikerin Oonagh Hayes Gedenken anstossen ? Warum am Gräberfeld X (der Opfer) gedacht wird. Die Autorin widmet sich der Gedenkpraxis, die sich aus der besonderen Geschichte des Gräberfeldes X, dem Bestattungsort des anatomischen Instituts der Universität Tübingen ergeben, in das zwischen 1933 und 1945 1077 Leichen von überwiegend aus politischen Gründen Hingerichteten eingeliefert wurden. Diese Gedenkpraxis war sehr lange von unglaublichen Verleugnungen geprägt, ehe die 1952 an der Stelle des Gräberfeldes errichteten drei steinernen Kreuze, 1963 durch eine Gedenktafel ergänzt, auf der auch die oft fehlerhaft geschriebenen Namen der Toten festgehalten wurden, 1990 würdig zu einer Grabstätte für die verbliebenen Überreste der seht inhomogenen Opfer umgewandelt wurde, aber erschütternderweise von einer Schändung mit Hakenkreuzen nicht verschont blieb. Die durch viele Verwerfungen charakterisierte Entstehungsgeschichte der Gedenkstätte wird in der sehr reflektierten Bewertung zu einem Teil des Gedenkprozesses mit einer „palimpsestartigen Überlagerung und Durchdringung von Spuren der eigenen Geschichte“.

Question
Mainstream media influence general public perception of DBS as a therapy and as a research field. The image formed by the media eventually impacts health policies and resource allocations. This paper aims at defining which factors play a part in shaping the public image of DBS and how the transfer of knowledge operates.
Method
Discourse analysis of German mainstream print media and qualitative interviews with DBS researchers and communication professionals.
Results
Journalistic texts end up far from the experts’ propositions. The transformation of research contents into a journalistic story corresponds to the formal and cultural needs of mainstream journalistic publication, but also make a transfer of knowledge possible altogether. This transfer of knowledge is more often than not accompanied by an emotional background that relies on cultural codes and history. In the case of DBS, this involves amongst other things a complex entanglement of pop-cultural elements, going from lobotomy and ECT to a miraculous notion of a mechanical cure “at the push of a button”. Both misconceptions, due to extreme suspicion or exaggerated hope, eventually harm the image of DBS.
Conclusion
Medical research needs communication professionals to tend to its image, especially in a field involving neuromodulation and neurosurgery. An appropriate chain of work, with medical researchers, press offices and science journalists operating hand in hand, necessitates trust in each professional’s competence in his or her own field of expertise. The processes behind a successful transfer of knowledge need time and attention, which are scarce resources. Nevertheless, if the public and political impact of communication is judged to be of sufficient importance, costs and efforts must be assumed.

Journée d'étude: La France en guerre dans le second XXe siècle. Représentations et mémoires contemporaines, 2000-2017. Oct 2018.
En 2017, à respectivement 70 ans de la Seconde Guerre mondiale et 50 ans de la guerre d'indépendance algérienne, on peut être surpris par l'effervescence mémorielle qui, en ce début du XXI e siècle, rend présents, de façon inégale selon les conflits – trop de mémoire ici, pas assez là –, ces événements. L'héritage de ces passés, loin de concerner seulement l'histoire militaire, témoigne de l'évolution du regard à la fois historiographique et sociétal sur ces conflits, appréhendés par ailleurs de façon de plus en plus différentielle selon les générations impliquées. Le 18 juin 1960, le général de Gaulle inaugure le Mémorial de la France combattante au mont Valérien, le 25 janvier 2005 le Mémorial de la Shoah est inauguré à Paris par le président Jacques Chirac tandis que le 16 octobre 2015, le premier ministre Manuel Valls inaugure le Mémorial du camp de Rivesaltes. Entre ces dates, la perception et la mémorialisation de la Seconde Guerre mondiale connaissent une évolution marquante : à la célébration de la mémoire de la résistance succède celle de la mémoire de la déportation au prisme d'un « devoir de mémoire » centré sur l'extermination des Juifs d'Europe tandis que, plus récemment, la crise des mémoires nationales héroïques génère une mémoire plurielle du second conflit mondial. De son côté, la guerre d'indépendance algérienne, qui fut longtemps une « non guerre », reste encore à la marge des politiques mémorielles qui tardent à lui assurer un régime de commémoration. Contrairement aux mémoires plurielles mais désormais consensuelles des conflits mondiaux, cette mémoire encore fortement conflictuelle illustre la difficulté qu'a la société française, dans un contexte postcolonial, à accepter la pluralité des expériences guerrières. Dans cette configuration, le colloque invite à interroger les représentations – symboliques, politiques, architecturales, artistiques… – que ces différents conflits passés nourrissent depuis le début du XXI e siècle et à mettre en évidence des dynamiques mémorielles qui investissent l'espace public.

« C’est notre regard qui enferme souvent les autres dans leurs plus étroites appartenances, et c’est notre regard aussi qui peut les libérer ». C’est sur cette citation d’Amin Maalouf que nous avons conclu notre précédent ouvrage, « Vieillir, et alors ? ». Il y était question d’âgisme, c’est-à-dire des attitudes ou comportements de discrimination, de ségrégation, de mépris envers un individu ou un groupe d’individus en raison du regard porté sur leur âge réel ou supposé. Partant du constat que les idées reçues sur la vieillesse, particulièrement ancrées dans notre société, contribuent à une division de la société entre « jeunes » et « vieux », nous avons voulu proposer une action en faveur d’une meilleure considération des aînés.
L’âgisme touche toutes les sphères de la vie (santé, travail, loisirs…), mais il en est une qui a retenu particulièrement notre attention, car elle touche ce qu’il y a de plus intime en soi, à savoir sa vie affective et sexuelle. Le danger est double : d’une part, pour une personne vieillissante, renoncer à sa liberté de choix en terme de sexualité car « de toute façon, ce n’est plus de mon âge » ou « ce n’est plus possible », et d’autre part, pour les séniors qui revendiquent leur liberté affective et sexuelle, le danger est de devoir faire face à des remarques, attitudes ou comportements qui peuvent être blessants voire discriminants, même s’ils sont le plus souvent involontaires.
C’est en partant de ce constat que l’association CIF-SP a initié ce projet de création collective d’un guide, sur la base d’une idée originale de la Mutualité SOLIDARIS en Belgique.

Il s’agit ici de croiser des approches universitaires et militantes qui ensemble doivent nous éclairer sur un impensé de notre société. Les stéréotypes, préjugés et discriminations liées à l’âge sont tellement prégnants qu’ils en sont invisibles et qu’on entrevoit à peine leurs effets.

Am Güterbahnhofgelände soll ein neues Stadtviertel entstehen. Mittendrin im ehemaligen Bahnhof wünschen sich die rund 50 Mitglieder des Vereins Lern- und Dokumentationszentrum zum Nationalsozialismus Räume für Ausstellungen, Seminare, Büros und eine vereinseigene Bibliothek.

Wie lässt sich Schülerinnen und Schülern eindrücklich vermitteln, dass die Auseinandersetzung mit der NS-Geschichte relevant bleibt?
In der KZ-Gedenkstätte Hailfingen • Tailfingen werden Führungen für Schulklassen seit 2011 auch von sogenannten Jugend-Guides übernommen: Für Jugendgruppen werden Guides eingesetzt, die selbst noch jung sind und somit einen größeren Bezug zur Lebenswelt der Heranwachsenden haben. 2012 wurde das zukunftsgerichtete Modell vom Bündnis für Demokratie und Toleranz mit einem Preis ausgezeichnet.
Johannes Kuhn (Regie) erzählt den Film aus Perspektive der Guides und begleitet Führungen, Schulungstermine und Vor- sowie Nachbereitungstreffen, wodurch ein klares Bild ihres Gedenkstättenalltags entsteht.
Gezeigt werden darüber hinaus die Öffentlichkeitsarbeit und Begegnungen mit Überlebenden der Shoah, die die Wichtigkeit der Erinnerungsarbeit heute und in Zukunft vor Augen führen.
In dieser Dokumentation wird deutlich, dass neben dem geringen Altersabstand zwischen Schülergruppen und Guides auch die Nähe zum Gedenkort einen Zugang zur Geschichte bieten kann, die für Jugendliche immer abstrakter zu werden droht.

V iolence has always played a central role in fascist ideology and political practice, either as a means by which to overthrow governments, or to achieve national rebirth and cleansing through the physical removal or annihilation of political enemies and "alien" ethnic or racial communities. And yet there were huge differences when it comes to the dynamics and magnitude of violence depending on the political context in which fascists came to power and ruled. The relatioship between fascism and violence has to a large degree been explored in two separate literatures. On the one hand, experts on fascism have primarily focused on analyses of ideology, political culture and social activities, with violence playing a secondary role in the analyses. On the other hand, scholars from the field of Holocaust and geno-cide studies have usually focused on ideological modes of exclusion and the implementation of genocidal violence without necessarily dealing with fascist ideology per se, or with its appeal and ability to achieve mass mobilisation. The Second Convention of the Association of Comparative Fasist Studies (COMFAS) aims at bringing the two fields together in order to help foster synergies and cross-fertilisa-tion. This is done through a cooperation between the Hugo Valentin Centre as hosting institution and Central European University as co-organiser.
