“The image of all rulers” or the vicious circle of the Znojmo rotunda The paper deals with the dating and interpretation of the Přemyslid cycle in two stripes of wall paintings in the rotunda of the Virgin Mary and St. Catherine in Znojmo, specifically the recent discussion sparked by an article by the same author (Reitinger, Lukáš: Znojemský cyklus Přemyslovců a oficiální katalog českých knížat. Umění 67, 2019, pp. 498–513). Here the author offered the interpretation of the paintings – they depict a visualisation of the official catalogue of Bohemian princes, which was a kind of backbone of the identity of the Přemyslids from the 12th century at the latest. The main arguments in favour of this interpretation are its simple comprehensibility for the contemporary commissioner and observer and the fact that the Přemyslid cycle, in its simplest sequence, coincides with the official catalogue, especially in the fact that Vratislav II is in both cases the 21st in the sequence from Přemysl Oráč (see appendix). This thesis was opposed in a very heated polemic by Lubomír Jan Konečný (Sakrálně-politická legitimace Přemyslovců v malbách znojemské rotundy. Vlastivědný věstník moravský 74, 2022, pp. 227–232) and David Vrána (Znojemská rotunda v současných polemikách. Vlastivědný věstník moravský 74, 2022, pp. 232–255), to whose texts the present article responds. The paper draws attention to the principal weaknesses of their theses, especially about the time of the construction and painting of the Znojmo rotunda, about the fundamental symbolism of the cloaks of the princes depicted, and about the unconvincing attempt to date the creation of the aforementioned official catalogue to the 13th century. Last but not least, the author of the paper takes into account the broader context of such medieval legitimizing depictions of genealogy and the succession of rulers or holders of a certain office.

The present article shows the political situation in Northwestern Croatia in the first half of the 13 th century, to be more precisely its second quarter. That period is marked by one of the most fascinating phenomena in the Continental Croatian culture of the Middle Ages when this part of Croatia underwent a true local Renaissance in political, economic and cultural spheres. That happened under the aegis of two most capable leaders, Coloman, the son of Andrew II and brother to King Bela IV, and Bishop Stephen II of Zagreb, the former royal Chancellor of Andrew II. Although this rise was cut short by the Tartar invasion of 1241-1242, the little traces that have survived, represent a totally new quality in the Croatian medieval culture. That parts of art production can be seen not only as quality pieces of art, but also as a document, hard evidence that can show the strength and the power of the political and economic programs of Coloman and Stephen II.

Tri nova posvetna natpisa hrvatskih vladara iz karolinškog perioda / Three New Votive Inscriptions With the Names of Croatian Rulers from the Carolingian Period2018 •
// Great number of preserved epigraphic votive inscriptions bearing mention of early medieval Croatian rulers is a phenomenon noticed long time ago which contributed significantly to better and more precise stylistic classification of pre-Romanesque sculpture on the eastern Adriatic coast, its further subclassification and more precise dating of certain morphological groups of pre-Romanesque reliefs. Since the exhibition Croats and Carolingians (2000-2001) three more votive inscriptions have been found or recently recognized which seem to bear names of two Croatian rulers from the 9th century – Mislav and Branimir.otkrivena su ili recentno prepoznata još tri posvetna natpisa s kojih su, s velikom dozom sigurnosti, iščitana imenn dvojice hrvatskih vladara iz 9. stoljeća Mislava i Branimira.
